    Captain's Report

By Capt. Randy Emmerman Test Captain

The 500 carries the same smooth lines of Italian design its sisters have. Ferretti builds yachts in a standard line of 45 to 88 footers, and also builds custom yachts over 100 feet in length. One of the focuses of the 500 is the spacious salon. It is bathed in natural light from the many windows surrounding the open layout. The salon has an L-shaped Italian leather sofa and dinette. Entertainment is provided by a Bose stereo with wave sound system and six speakers. There is also a flat screen TV. Chef’s DelightThe sunken galley is over on the starboard side and provides all the necessary equipment you’ll be aboard. This 500 uses popular stainless steel appliances, which includes a refrigerator, microwave and three-burner cooktop. Light oak cabinetry and elegant granite countertops highlight the galley. Command StationForward is the interior helm station which features a captain's chair with comfortable leather. The 500 has all the instruments, gauges, switches and navigation systems within easy view and reach of the helmsman. The view forward is exceptional with the single piece windshield. Electronic shifters are practically effortless. Electronic information systems for the engines keep you well informed of the health of the twin 700-hp MAN engines. Luxurious AmenitiesThe Ferretti 500 has three full staterooms and two full heads. Each stateroom has individual climate controls so everyone can be comfortable. Hanging lockers and storage is plentiful in each space. The heads have vanities with marble countertops and circular shower enclosures. Up on the BridgeThe flying bridge is accessed either from a ladder in the cockpit or from a hatch in the cabin. The topside entertainment area has a coffee table and lounge as well as a huge space for soaking up the sun. The flying bridge also has a wet bar for serving beverages and snacks so you don't have to keep running back and forth to the galley. The upper helm station is positioned on the starboard side. The engine controls are on an electric flip dash, which protects the instruments when you are at the dock or controlling the boat from the lower station. Engine AccessThe cockpit has lots of room for entertaining as well as open access to the engine compartment through a teak day hatch. The engines are very accessible down a few steps. The twin 700-hp MAN engines and generator are arranged for easy access to engine check points. The Racor filters and sea strainers are also within easy reach. The swim platform on the 500 is huge. You have enough room to carry a tender here, and when you are at anchor this becomes a wonderful launching pad for water toys. Within a compartment in the platform is Ferretti's new A.R.G. or Anti Roll Gyro. This system of gyros helps reduce the yacht's movements while moving slowly, anchored, or moored. This optional system seems to work pretty well, as we had some good wave action while waiting our turn to take the 500 underway for the helicopter shoot for our video. SpecsThe Ferretti 500 measures 51'4” length overall and has a 15'1” beam. She draws 4'10” of water and weighs 41,006 lbs. dry and 49,384 lbs. fully loaded. Fuel capacity on this model is 481 gallons and she can carry up to 180 gallons of fresh water for long cruises. Test ResultsWe tested the 500 in 2-4' seas with four people on board. Our boat was powered with twin MAN 700-hp diesels with 737mm x 1100mm Rolla NiBrAl 5-blade propellers. At 2000 rpm she was cruising along at 32.2mph burning 63.7gph, for a range of 219 miles on a full tank of fuel. At full speed she achieved a good 34.6mph turning 2200 rpm with a fuel burn of 71.1gph. While she handled well underway and at top end, I would like to see some hand rails added for better passenger safety while moving about underway. Also, some larger rudders may add more maneuverability. If you appreciate the lines of Italian designers and like the luxurious accommodations they can offer, then you will certainly be impressed with the 500. Coupled with some impressive performance, the Ferretti 500 is certainly one you should have on your list of appointments for test rides.
