Captain's ReportTested By Capt. Bob SmithUnder the hot and steamy Canadian sun, yes, Canadian, we tested the latest version of Doral’s 200 SunQuest bowrider. This one had a diesel engine. Now, before you turn your nose up and have visions of a smelly, oily mess, this boat really had nothing to foul the air, engine compartment and hardly the ears. She was a great performer, as you will see, and handled very well. I have to say, it was a toss up whether the diesel or the gas version would be the choice.This model is 19’2” without the swim platform and 21’8” when you add the platform length to the overall. She is 8’ in the beam and needs 20” draft with the drive up and 34” with the drive down. Her weight is around 2800lbs and she carries up to 31 gallons of fuel on board. She has a sporty 16 degree deadrise helping deliver a dry and sporty ride. This year you have four choices for exterior colors; champagne, Doral Deep Blue, Doral Deep Black and Torch Red. Canvas colors are Champagne, Charcoal and Doral Deep Blue.As with most everything Doral does, they use 316 grade stainless steel in gunwale molding, oversized cleats, ski tow eyes and other marine hardware. This means you will get better durability and expect less corrosion problems on these critical components. Bow seating is comfortable with deluxe upholstery with textured inserts. Stainless steel grab rails are within easy reach if you choose to ride up front. Under the bow seats you have plenty of storage space. The aft lounge seat is sculpted rather than just a straight boring bench seat. Of course, under the bench you have more storage. Beverage holders are peppered throughout the layout for the chilled beverages. Ski storage is in the floor in a lined storage space and is vented to allow the humidity to escape. In the cockpit, you have a companion station with lockable glove box. Elegant looking wood accents really add to the fine looks. Swivel and slide adjustments make the seats most comfortable for the long rides. Side pockets let you keep long items close at hand while not in the way on the floor. I expected some sluggish responses in the marina area with a small diesel but I was pleasantly surprised at the nimble response from the 157hp Volvo Penta D3 Diesel sterndrive. After we reached the safe water area outside of the marina, we found she could easily be on plane in just 4.1seconds. She was quickly cruising at thirty miles per hour in just 9.3 seconds. Sure, I had a short delay as the engine kicked the turbo in, but this boat really responded quickly. At 650rpms, she has some vibrations like any diesel will and registered a 67 dBa sound level. She cruised best at 2500rpms and has an exciting 3.3 gallons per hour burn rate at cruise. This incredible burn rate delivers 213 miles on a single tank of fuel. While cruise delivers a speed of 25.2mph, wide open throttle delivers a speed of 41.7 miles per hour. Even more interesting is that she is only burning 8.8 gallons per hour at full throttle. At full throttle she only registered a sound level of 86 dBa, quieter than some in the same class.If you enjoy the pleasures that boating has to offer and want something that is economical to operate, the new Doral 200 SunQuest Diesel bow rider has something special to offer you.
