The Cranchi Endurance 41 has an 11'5" (3.50 m) beam, weighs 15,452 lbs. (7,000 kgs.) dry and is powered by either twin Volvo Penta D4 diesels rated at 300-hp, or D6's, rated at 370-hp.
Cranchi prides itself on a boat-building heritage that goes back to 1870 and today it has four modern production plants in northern Italy as well a marina where costumers can experience their boats seven days a week. Over the years we have cruised on a couple of Cranchis for strictly pleasure and so we can report that the boats have "gravitas." By that we mean, not only do they look sleek and sexy like most other Italian-built boats, but they are also ruggedly constructed with only the best materials, hardware and systems. They look like big express cruisers not inflated sportboats.
There is a lot to look at here: note the teak (standard) on the swim platform and the walk-thru, the optional roller kit on the aft lip of the swim platform to help ease the dinghy aboard, the step up to the side deck and the swim ladder to starboard.
Finding A Mate
We think finding the suitable boat is a little like finding a mate. If you like the looks of her, then it is time it inquire further, and we feel the same way about boats. If you like the looks of the 41, then chances are that you will like her smaller and larger sisters, too -- some of which come in hard-top and flying bridge configurations. By taking a good look at the Cranchi Endurance 41 you can decide if she is too large or too small, then move up or down the line accordingly.
Our observation is that virtually all of the Cranchis have pretty much the same fit-and-finish and attention to quality and detail. From our contacts with the company we get the distinct feeling that Cranchi management is more focused on building good boats than on increasing its stock price or becoming the world's largest boat builder. That augurs well for their customers.
Small inflatable dinghies are light and can really be handled by one person, but it is fun to have help.
The 41 is built to be a classy day boat for two or three couples who want to enjoy a day on the water taking in the hot sun, cooling down in refreshing water, and enjoying each others' company. Most every Italian boat is built for socializing, and this 41 is no different.
She has a fuel capacity of 206 gallons (780 L) and with twin Volvo Penta D6's driving through sterndrive Duoprops she should have a range of about 300 nautical miles at around 23 knots, with a 10% fuel reserve. We haven't tested her, but given her geometry and comparing her with other boats powered by the D6, this is our ballpark estimate. That represents over nine hours of running time, more than long enough to get one from, say, Portofino to Corsica, or from Civitavecchia to Sardinia.
Entertaining two or three couples and couple-cruising is what the Endurance 41 is all about.
Americans might appreciate that the 41's range at about 23 knots would be from New York to Nantucket, a seven or eight hour run, or from Miami to Nassau in six or seven hours. Along the French Riviera, typically boaters get to their destinations in less than two hours so they will only need a half load of fuel.
This is about as good as it gets in a 40' express cruiser bridge -- three individual seats facing forward with the helm seat fitted with electric height adjustment (standard). You will not find this often and we think it is one of the most important aspects of this boat.
The Helm -- It's Outstanding
The builder has done a superb job in our opinion of designing the helm seats. First of all the helm seat and the one next to it are separate seats. We like that. Second, the skipper's seat can be electrically adjusted. That means every operator no matter what his/her height can be at just the right height for best visibility.
It is very unusual for an express cruiser with a port entrance to the mid cabin to have a forward facing seat on the portside of the boat on the deck above. Cranchi has managed to do that with the Endurance 41 and we applaud this design. With three pair of eyes facing forward the skipper will get plenty of help with his piloting, navigation and lobster pot spotting -- something that is important at the speeds this boat can attain.
The wood-grain dash looks elegant and you can have either a leather-wrapped wheel or a wood one.
Note the port side companion seat facing forward. This is rare in express cruisers with a mid cabin.
The Accommodations and Amenities
In keeping with the mission of the Endurance 41, there are two huge sun pads (the stern one is standard and the one on the bow is optional). Since the one on the stern has a stainless steel rail around it, we suspect that some owners will be having guests lay there while underway, although we don't recommend that.
There is a wet bar on the portside just abaft the companion seat that has a grill, a sink and room for an optional refer or ice maker. Opposite is a J-shaped settee with table that will comfortably seat five or six people. So this means that three couples can be entertained nicely. The 41 is not a boat on which to have a gang for cocktails.
The grill and wet bar (standard) in the cockpit is on the port side opposite the settee. An optional refer or ice maker can go below.
On the other hand, if you are planning to take off to a beach down the coast and anchor for the day, the 42 can handle eight people nicely. There is a garage below the aft bunny pad and above the engines. It is large enough for a small inflatable dingy, and you won't need more than the smallest outboard to get you into shore or over to a friend's boat.
The swim platform is teak which feels great under bare feet and it is large. A handy shower with hot and cold water is standard on the stern.
The 41 is laid out as a dayboat or a cruising boat for a couple.
Here we find a giant leather U-shaped banquette in the bow which is about as big as we have ever seen on this size boat. Of course this makes into a double birth, but we like it just as it is. Again it will comfortably seat five people, and six in a pinch. Better yet, just two in he evening by candle light, a good bottle of Burgundy and Sade on the stereo singing Smooth Operator.
That banquette is covered with real leather, folks, something not often seen on a boat of this size. The galley is at the left, head at the right.
There is an adequate galley with gas stove top, refer, sink and microwave. The thing we like best about the galley is the overall design. It looks classy and neat and fits in with the otherwise up-scale and romantic ambiance of the saloon.
The two-burner stove top is covered with its Corian cover as is the sink. If you never want to cook below, we won't tell. Use it to hold baskets of fruit and flowers.
Cranchi has put the 85 liter fridge opposite the galley console below under the electrical panel. Good thinking.
There is a mid cabin that is full beam, has a mini sofa to port and standing head room on the portside and pretty good headroom above the berths. While most all express cruisers this size have a mid cabin we think that Cranchi has handled this one particularly well. One of the things that has made the difference is Cranchi's decision to have just one head. That has freed up a bit of room in the mid cabin for the seat, cabinets, hanging locker and even a sink. Further, it has allowed the whole saloon to be more open and actually handle more people.
The mid cabin is full beam and spacious as these cabins go in this size of boat. A filler cushion fills in the gap for those who want a queen.
Woods below are Wenge, which is au currant, the galley counter top is Corian, and the fabrics used in the interior are the latest cotton designs out of Milano, Alcantara and leather on the seats. All hardware, portlights and light fixtures are top quality.
This is a good example of the contours and modern Italian styling that exist all over the boat but which are not as obvious as in the wet head.
Miscellaneous Overall Observations
There are many things that are done right on this boat that are normally omitted on many express cruisers in the 40' size. In no particular order here are some of the things that stand out to us--
* Lots of standard teak, the swim platform, part of the cockpit, and at the bow.
* Standard 700 Watt anchor windlass with remote at the helm.
* Standard Volvo Penta EVC package with electric throttle and shift controls.
* Rudder angle indicator. (Of course since it is a sterndrive there is no rudder, but we still like to know where the drives are pointing.)
* Stainless steel fuel tank instead of aluminum. Inspection hatch on tank.
* Copper fuel lines with flexible connectors.
* Chain washer outlet.
Hey, the Endurance 41 is not just for the tropics. Fender racks are standard.
Options You May Will Want
In looking over Cranchi's list of options we see only a few that we would need to order. They are--
* Cockpit cover.
* Cablemaster for shore power.
* Waste water tank.
People in the tropics may want to add a generator and A/C unit. Some people may want the bow thruster. Of course the boat comes without electronics, so all of those items need to be added.
This is what the 41 looks like when she is buttoned up. This is a good way to keep her on a mooring to protect the interior from UV and birds. Or, cruise her up the coast of Norway in the fall. The cockpit is self draining.
There are many 40-somethings on the market so consumers are blessed with choices, but on the other side of the coin there will be some tough choices that need to be made. Most boats in this size range are inboard-powered or have pod drives -- one is inefficient and the other is costly. By going with sterndrive lower units and diesel power Cranchi can get the efficiency without the cost in the 41.
