Captain's Report
The C-Dory 22 Cruiser Delivers on Ride and Looks
This 22-Footer Really Does Give You the Ride of a Cruiser with Distinctive Lobster Boat Looks
By Capt. Rob Smith
C-Dory has come up with some new ideas on the 22 Cruiser and offer some excellent options, which make it even more comfortable for somebody like me to enjoy the ride. The C-Dory line is truly rugged, practical and sensible in just about every sense of the word. This boat will be just as comfortable in the icy Canadian north as well as the warm Caribbean south.
Exterior Features and Layout
The C-Dory 22 Cruiser is easy to board from either the port or starboard aft with wide gunwales. Our test boat had the stainless steel arch and the cooler rack, which were tempting handholds as well. A handy option if you like to get out into the water to enjoy a swim is the swim platform and ladder located on the port side. Our model also had a fuel water separator mounted inside the engine splash well. The fuel selector switch is also located here. Stepping over the splash well into the cockpit, a new addition is the tank sight cut outs in the cockpit. Now you won’t have to worry about the fuel float switch working, because you can see just how much fuel you have, or don’t have for that matter. Separating the tanks is a space for the bilge pumps and hydraulic pump on the back wall.
Another great new option is the large Igloo cooler rack and cooler across the back. The rack keeps the cooler up so you can simply reach in and grab a cold beverage, and it also leaves room underneath for storage and keeping an eye on the fuel level. In the starboard corner at the stern is a quick connect for a raw water washdown. In a box in the stern wall on the starboard side is the cranking battery. If you want to carry an accessory battery, it can be fitted in the matching port box in the stern wall.
Over the cabin, you can opt for either a short or tall stainless steel arch. This is nice to have to get your antennas up high as well as your stern light. Across the back of the cabin wall are tracks for either a bimini or a full canvas option. Windows and doors are Diamond Sea Glaze, like you find on very high end cruisers. Walkways to the bow are very narrow, but you won’t find it necessary to go forward often. When you do, there are sturdy rails for added safety.
Cabin Features
Moving inside, the port side has a handy dinette that takes advantage of every space for storage and can be converted into a single berth. Across from the dinette is another change, a fiberglass galley. This galley has a stainless steel sink, Wallace diesel/electric cooktop and huge under cabinet storage. Overhead, this unit has the optional additional 4-inches of headroom. At 6 feet tall, I find the extra room isn’t really necessary, but I did find it made the cabin seem much larger. The helm is set up so you can see clearly out of all the windows. Instrumentation room is plentiful to add your own array of electronics. Our test boat had an optional Garmin 498 mounted above the wheel, Honda digital gauges to the right and optional Raynav VHF to the left.
The V-berth in the 22 Cruiser is over 6 feet long and gives you enough room to relax and catch some much needed sleep. The Porta-pottie fits neatly in the center beneath the berth, and the canvas snaps in around the entry and provides some privacy when you need it.
Specifications and Ride
The choppy waters of the Miami Boat Show proved the C-Dory 22 Cruiser could handle the rough stuff. Hull noises do get a bit distracting when it really got busy, but the levels remained tolerable throughout. While I found she was quite capable of reaching 32.9mph at top speed, her cruise was a more leisurely 14.2mph. She is up on plane in 4.7 seconds and up to 30mph in 13.8 seconds. At cruise, you can run over 200 miles on a full tank of fuel with the economic Honda 90 horsepower four-stroke outboard.
The new 22 Cruiser measures 22 feet length overall with a beam of 7 feet 8 inches. She weighs a scant 1,925 pounds without the engine, and has two 50 gallon fuel tanks. This model is rated for a maximum power of 100 horsepower.
Whether you are working pots in the bay up in Maine, sliding into a camping spot around an island in Canada, or just cruising along the Intracoastal Waterways down the U.S. East Coast, you are going to appreciate the ride in C-Dory’s 22 Cruiser.
