The Mission of the Azimut 72S
The Azimut 72S is designed to compliment the man or woman who buys her by being as tasteful, elegant, and as chic as they are. Her intended use is for high-style entertaining of all sorts in the lap of understated luxury -- nothing ostentatious, just cool and as modern as Milan's fashion runways. And she is intended to go fast. Think of her as a large floating penthouse apartment with several terraces for viewing the azure-blue sea, a waterside deck for enjoying the sun, a luncheon venue under a shady trellis, a large, airy salon for cocktails and conversation at sun down, a dedicated, raised platform for formal dinner parties, and bed chambers that are comfortable and sexy. That's the Azimut 72S.
Huge Main Deck for Entertaining.
Except for one small area where the lower helm is located, the whole main deck inside is devoted to entertaining in two venues -- a large salon for 8 to 10 people aft, and a formal dining area that can seat as many as eight people. No galley. No stairway up to the flying bridge. No side doors. No private stairway to the owner's stateroom. No wasted space. Add to that the aft deck, which is wide open thanks to tri-fold doors with stainless steel frames and this has to be one of the largest entertainment main decks in class. Think of the possibilities.●
The Azimut 72S is all Italian and while others may try to copy the sleek lines of an Azimut and the minimalist nature of her interiors, her designers have the vision.●
Large Hull-Side Windows.
We normally call the "windows" on the side of a boat's hull "portlights" but in the case of Azimut, they are really windows. Azimut started the trend and while much-copied, no builder makes them as large -- or as interesting. ●
Unique Control System (UCS).
This system replaces the steering wheel on the flying bridge with a joystick that responds to variable pressure to steer the boat, operate the throttle and reverse gears. ●
Sun Roof Over Dining Area.
By moving the flying bridge helm aft, Azimut has been able to put a sun roof over lower helm and dining table. ●
Like most Azimuts, the 72S has the tail fins on the trailing edge of its boat deck. It makes Azimuts stand out. ●
Azimut has a suite of services for its owners that include brokerage, a charter service, a "loaner" program when a boat is having maintenance or repair, and extended service contracts, among other things. ●
Largest Dealer Network.
Azimut has over 100 dealers in 68 countries. No builder in class has anything quite like it. As a result, Azimut owners cruising the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Persian Gulf, East China Sea, or the east coast of the U.S. will find service help relatively close at hand.
Context is Important
Where does this boat belong? To put the Azimut 72S in context one must first picture the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Puerto Cervo on the north coast of Sardinia…or Monte Carlo with the apartments and hotels of the city (the country!) towering above and wrapped around the harbor in something like stadium seating looking down at the boats…or in Antibes with its old walls and castle guarding one of the largest collection of yachts in the Mediterranean. In the last 15 years new, glorious marinas have opened up all over the world -- in the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East, Europe and now in China as well. Large yacht marinas in the US abound. These are places that the Azimut 72S fits in well as a base of operation.
Power for Performance
The owner of a 72S will be a person who understands power. And this boat has it in all sorts of ways. In her engine room there are twin MAN 1800-hp V-12 diesels delivering power to the props by conventional means. Also ensconced in the engine room are two 20-kW generators so there should always be plenty of electricity for the air conditioning, clothes washer and women's blow dryers to be on at the same time.
Azimut states that the WOT speed of the vessel is 39 knots with best cruise being 34 knots. We have not tested the boat so have no comment. But the word on the street is that she may go even faster with a light fuel load. At full load the vessel weighs 101,200 lbs. (46 t) and has a fairly deep-V bottom for this type of boat at 16.9-degrees at the transom.
Snapshot of the Azimut 72S--
People that have been to Azimut's website know that one will find scant details of the Azimut 72S. That is because Azimut management believes that its boats speak for themselves, and we concur. Take a look--
