Better by design

The new 201 Osprey has been designed for a dry ride. This is due to a beamier hull, a deeper "V" and a shallower draft.

Control at your fingertips

Well-placed gauges and controls make this a well-laid-out helm. The tilt steering is a nice touch too.

Smart use of space

A cooler tucked under the helm seat is just another smart use of space which makes the Osprey 201 feel bigger than it is.

Power and Comfort

With a Yamaha 150 H.P. 0X66 FI SWII two-stroke outboard bolted to the transom, this boat absolutely jumps out of the water.

Ready to Fish

The seat forward of the console holds the livewell, and rod holders on either side of the seat keep rods at hand.

Another nice touch

A storage compartment in the side of the helm keeps your tackle neat and secure in clear drawers.

Aquasport 201 Osprey Captain's Report

Aquasport 201 Osprey Sport

You know a boat manufacturer is serious about making a statement by naming a product after the mighty Osprey. Well known as a precision fisher, the feathered Osprey soars high above the water before plunging down on an unsuspecting fish. Talons snatch their prey and the feast begins.

Ospreys of the Aquasport variety range in size from 16' to 22.5'. Right in the middle is the 201 Osprey (20'4" LOA), but don't let the numbers fool you. This boat has the on board room of a 23 footer. Some of this space became available when the beam of 8'6" was decided upon. Some wing span!

That beam isn't the only fresh piece of engineering and the best contributor to the dry ride may come from an unsung hero- a hull with a deeper "V" and shallow draft.

Representatives at Aquasport have fondly dubbed the Osprey a "tweener" boat... a little more than a bay boat and yet not quite a bluewater center console. "Tweener" or not, some offshore fishermen will be jealous of stock features on the 201 Osprey. Consider: insulated (and lighted) livewell; raw water washdown; insulated fishbox; rod holders (10) and rod storage everywhere as well as a 77-gallon (that's right 77 gallon) fuel tank.

1st Class Amenities

At the helm, electronics and panel switches are all readily accessible to the left of the wheel. Unlabeled switches stand ready for additional accessories, and two twelve-volt adaptors are standard. The wheel tilts and has a steering knob, a simple and yet must have feature that gets used. A compass is built in atop the dash for easy visibility.

The front of the console that is the backrest for the livewell/seat also doubles as a reasonably sized storage area. That livewell is hidden under a seat cushion that both snaps and tilts via a ribbed insert. Handrails surround the helm station, attaching to the console itself and flexed slightly on the model tested. Reinforcement from the interior of the console will eliminate this. While the livewell is in use as a passenger seat, hand holds are available on both sides. They’re located just inside of the three rod holders on each side of the seat cushion, and 12-volt fish eye deck lights are located below the locking tackle storage containing three see through trays.

Forward of the helm, a locking deck plate houses the battery box and switch. At the bow there's an insulated built-in fish box, as well as a sizeable gear locker. Ground tackle is stowed out from under foot behind a deck lid that allows movement to deploy or retrieve the anchor.

The starboard gunwale is recessed and is home to fishing rod storage. Above, 2 stainless steel rod holders with caps. Located below the rod storage is the raw water outlet. Also, atop the gunwales from amidships to stern: stainless steel hand rails and "recessed" cleats where the gunwale is angled about 45 degrees.

The amidships locker at the stern stores the two cycle oil reservoir, the in-line livewell strainer, and bilge pump. The port side stern locker has a limited amount of room for fenders and lines. While collapsing or telescoping dive ladders are becoming the norm, an additional handrail is mounted to the transom for that final wet step aboard.

Test Results

With a Yamaha 150 H.P. 0X66 FI SWII two stroke outboard bolted to the transom, the boat weighed in at 2600 pounds. When run through her paces with two passengers and a full fuel tank, the 201 Osprey produced fun and confidence with its dry ride.

The noise factor is kept at bay with a low DB reading at a wide open 4900 rpm of 74 at idle speed to only 90 DB at a wide open 4900 rpm. Credit that “V” hull’s displacement of water here.

Max speed at 4900 rpm was 42.3 mph and coincided with a fuel consumption of 20 gph. This boat absolutely jumped out of the water, planing at best in three and one-tenth seconds. In about 5.5 seconds the speedo is passing by 30 mph. Best cruise was found at 3500 rpm or 30.4 mph, giving us a range of 274 miles.

If you were an Osprey you would trade your talons in for fish hooks. The Aquasport 201 Osprey… it does its feathered namesake proud!
