From the Smoker Craft Family of boats comes a real screamer, the American Angler 1866 Bass and Bay Center Console. If you like thrills, you’ll love this one as she is nimble and responsive. She is simple in design and wide open for fishing. Her one-piece bottom is a semi-V hull, all welded design with 3 keels for straight running, quick turns and better performance.

Starting at the bow, this test boat was rough and ready with room for a trolling motor. The upper deck will get you up to spot the fish or closer to the fish as it tries to dive under the bow. Diamond plating provides good traction even when the deck is sloppy. Just under the lip of the deck is a cargo net storage compartment to keep gloves and tools ready. One level down, the floor is built with Endurance Lifetime no-wood material that is easy to clean and takes a beating asking for more. At the end of the day, hit it with soap and water and forget about it. For those of us who like to sit back and relax waiting for the fish to bite, you can add a pedestal chair or leaning seat in this section for comfort. In the floor is a storage locker for the anchor gear, lines and fenders. The bow light should be easy to find since they provide clips for storing it inside.

The front of the fiberglass center console has a bench seat for your pals. The back flips up for easy access to the batteries or connections under the dash. In the seat base is a livewell with Power Stream aerator to keep the bait fresh and lively. Moving around to the driver’s seat, there wasn’t one on our test boat! Now that was a bit confusing, but this boat handled fine without it, although I like the leaning post seat with carry-on cooler underneath to keep my colas and snacks fresh. The dash is protected by a windscreen with wrap-around stainless grab bar. Steering was a 5 spoke stainless wheel. The throttle and shifter was too close to the wheel on my test ride, but that is easy to remedy. Gauges were simple with just a tachometer and fuel gauge and switches with push button breakers. You have tons of room to add GPS and fish finders, radios or whatever you like.

Behind the helm is room to cast and work lines or pots. Rod racks and tackle trays are built into the side panels and the trays have vinyl protective edges to prevent cutting you. At the aft end of the tackle trays are more cargo storage pockets for loose items. Across the stern are dual casting steps divided by a engine splash well. The pumps and plumbing is readily serviceable under the splash well.

The 1866 Bass and Bay Center Console measures 18 feet length overall and has a beam width of 86”. Interior depth is 23” and transom width is 88”. This model is approved for up to 80hp outboards and has a 34 gallon fuel capacity. She has a capacity of 1350lbs people and gear and weighs only 700lbs without engine.

Testing was on a windy inland lake in Indiana. I found her top speed to be 29.9mph at 6000rpm and her cruise speed to be around 18mph at 4000rpm. At cruise, she should deliver about 119 miles on a full tank of fuel. She is on plane in only 2.7 seconds and reaches her top speed at 6.5 seconds.

For the simple life aboard for fishing and a fun ride, the 1866 Bass and Bay Center Console certainly fits the bill.
