She is the second smallest boat in the builder's line, and we're told that the people who buy them actually use them for their intended purpose, rather than just letting them sit on a mooring in front of the yacht club. The Lazzara Breeze 76 cruises at 20 knots according to a factory spokesman. It’s propulsion system pumps out 1800-hp, much less than other boats in class.

When we studied 12 motoryachts in the 76’ range in preparation for this report on the Lazzara Breeze 76 we were astonished at the differences between her and most other yachts in class. For example, she is the lightest and has the lowest standard horsepower propulsion system. In our report we cover 20 “distinguishing features” but there are, in fact, many more. Capt. John wrings out the Yamaha AR192 in our test which clocked this 19’2'' (5.84 m) jet boat going from 0 to plane in 3.5 seconds and to 30 mph in 5.1 seconds.

Powered by a 1.8L 4-stroke Yamaha engine designed specifically for marine use in jet craft, the AR192 has performance usually expected of much more powerful boats. Not only does she go fast, but her “Thrust Directional Enhancer” makes docking easier than ever before. Capt. John said, “This is the most maneuverable jet drive boat that I have ever brought in to a dock. I’m sure a beginner could feel confident right out of the blocks.” That’s high praise from our usually skeptical captain. More...

The NC14 has been designed to be economical to operate. Pods are an efficient drive system in this size boat and that combined with her light weight and 13'5" (4.1 m) beam, means that her fuel economy will be about as good as it gets. Her nearly plumb bow means no wasted space inside. In the pilothouse, furniture serves double duty to give the vessel added utility without extra cost. The Volvo Penta IPS600 started the pod revolution just 8 years ago and now everyone takes it’s watershed innovation for granted.

When it was first introduced in late 2005 industry wags wondered if the forward facing props would be accepted by the boating industry and consumers. Never mind that forward-facing props had been used for years in U.S. Navy vessels and on most modern passenger ships because they are more efficient. Eight years later we have the answer. Today a majority of builders in the appropriate 40’ (12 m) size range have incorporated the Volvo Penta IPS600 into hundreds of models. The system uses the Volvo D6, in-line 6 cylinder 435-hp engine that was designed specifically for marine applications and it remains one of the most competitive engines in boating. The twin toon 23’10” (7.26 m) Sylvan has deep-V shaped pontoons and a pod for the Evinrude E-TEC 150-hp outboard. She is not only fast out of the hole but has a WOT speed of 34.9 MPH – which is fast for a twin toon boat.

Sylvan calls the patented shape of its pontoons “Revolutionary Planing Technology” (RPT) and there is nothing in the pontoon category like them. Our test confirmed the builder’s claim that it enables a quicker time to plane. We were also much impressed by the WOT speed as it was something we would expect from a tri-toon but not a twin toon. Moreover, the Mirage gets up on plane in a level attitude. We’d say the combination of the high-torque 2-stroke Evinrude E-TEC 150-hp engine and the bottom shape of the toons make a compelling match. Mako 284 CC:
Second Generation Improves Breed

Mako 284 CC
Two key features of the Mako 284 Center Console are her relatively high freeboard and deep cockpit. The freeboard at the transom is 30" (75 cm). Note the gunwales reach up to the anglers'  thighs in the stern. The 284 is well-known for being a dry boat and its freeboard, bow flare, and wide chines are the reasons.

A couple of years ago Tracker Marine, which owns Mako, decided that since it had achieved its goal of being the biggest boat builder in the world in terms of units sold, that it would change its focus. The company would switch from quantity at rock-bottom low prices, to quality at reasonable prices. Thus was born the Gen 2 version of the Mako 284, which is the flagship of Mako's 4-model line.
