Jeanneau Velasco 43:
We Sea Trial a New Launch

Jeanneau Velasco 43
This Velasco 43 is a new family cruiser from Jeanneau with a LOA of 45’7” (13.7 m) and a beam of 13’6” (4.13 m).

With the Velasco 43 Jeanneau has conceptualized an all new family cruiser that blends both the indoors and outdoors in an open floor plan. We found her to be a sea-kindly cruiser in gusty, snotty conditions compared to other boats we have tested.  She also provided plenty of room inside for moving about and accommodations for four in two staterooms. Key West 203 FS:
A Competitive Center Console

Key West 203 FS
The Key West 203 FS was introduced last year and is equipped with features to make her more family-friendly.

The Key West 203 FS has a lot going for her in addition to price and good value. Her light weight and narrow beam will make her easier to push which means that perhaps she can be powered by a smaller engine. She will also be easier to tow, which means a smaller vehicle can be used. She draws just 12" with the outboard up, which is less than the other boats in class which means she can get into skinnier water. But that's not the whole story and there are some surprises. More...

Hargrave 114 Sea Legend:
Designed for the Long Haul

Hargrave 114 Sea Legend
The Hargrave 114 Sea Legend is one of those yachts that has a build mission that is distinctly different than her exterior lines would have us believe.

The Hargrave 114 Sea Legend is one of the most stunning builds we’ve seen come off of that company's drawing board. She has the characteristics of a worldly traveler while at the same time showing an upscale interior. See the video...

New Captain's Report

Mako 234 CC:
We Compare Her to 9 Boats in Class

Mako 234 CC
When we compared the Mako 234 to 9 other center console boats we were surprised at what we discovered. She comes standard with a single 250-hp Mercury OptiMax XXL.

There has been a sea change in approach at Mako recently and the Mako 234 is a prime example of what is going on. A sharp price point is no longer the object of this offshore fishing boat brand. Rather, it is just simply another one of the vessel's many "amenities." Much more important is the fact that Mako is building one of the most functional and quality-oriented boats in class no matter what they cost. Comparing her to nine of the most prestigious brands in class was a huge eye-opener. More...

Yamaha 1.8L Super High Output:
Purpose-Built for Yamaha Jets

Yamaha 1.8L
Yamaha produces its own engines for its watercraft, meaning there are no opportunities for finger pointing when something goes wrong. That’s peace of mind for any buyer.

The Yamaha 1.8L Super High Output engine has been the heart and soul of Yamaha boats and WaveRunners for some time now, and not by accident. It’s a purpose-built engine specifically made by Yamaha for exactly that task. Our tests have shown it to be an excellent performer in both single and twin applications, and since it performs so well in the boats, the results we’ve found in the WaveRunners is nothing short of exhilarating. Sun Tracker Party Barge 20 DLX:
A 9-Step Guide to Pontoon Boat Buying

Sun Tracker Party Barge 20 DLX
Square foot for square foot, nothing beats a pontoon boat for being an entertainment venue on the water. We think the Sun Tracker Party Barge 20 DLX is a good place to start anyone's quest to find the right pontoon boat.

Last year more pontoon boats were sold in the U.S. than any other type of vessel. The buyers came from all sorts of boats, from 16' multi-specie aluminum boats to large fiberglass motoryachts. All the buyers had one thing in common -- that they were searching for more space for entertaining or watersports. But how should one go about finding the right pontoon boat for the intended mission? And, where should a buyer start? Our suggestion is to start by looking at the Party Barge 20 DLX and follow our 9-step guide. More...

New Snapshot Review

Jupiter 30 FS:
Proven Hull and Loaded

Jupiter 30 FS
The Jupiter 30 has a LOA of 29'6" (8.99 m), a beam of 9'4" (2.84 m) and an operating displacement with twin engines and full tanks of 9,430 lbs. (4,386 kgs.).

Jupiter Marine is a boutique boat builder which has positioned itself at the top-end of the crowded center console market. The 30 FS (Forward Seating) utilizes a proven and much-respected hull combined with a completely new interior. The boat is equipped with a stand-up head with a wide door, and all of the usual amenities found in high-end center consoles. But her strongest feature is her deep-V hull with a 24-degree deadrise at the transom for a comfortable ride in the square ones and a pad on the keel for added speed and fuel efficiency. More...

MJM Yachts:
The Fit-And-Finish Difference

MJM Yachts
Aside from the details that make MJM Yachts such excellent cruisers, the design parameters are unusual and sophisticated.

We’ve come to realize that MJM yachts are in a class by themselves. Sure, the looks speak of a Downeast cruiser, but upon closer examination MJM yachts are clearly in a different league. We’ve previously shown separate videos on the build quality and strength of construction. So today we look a little closer at the fit-and-finish, another aspect that separates these yachts from the typical. More...

Beneteau Oceanis 41:
A Boat for All Regions

Beneteau Oceanis 41
The Beneteau Oceanis 41 is 40'9" LOA, has a 13'9" beam and she draws from 5'7" to 7'2" (1.70 m to 2.18 m) depending on the keel ordered. The standard wood beach measures 9’4’’ x 2’6’’ (2.85 m x 0.77 m).

The Beneteau Oceanis 41 is available with three different interior layouts, one of which has three cabins and two private heads. She also comes in both deep-draft and shoal-draft versions. Like many of Beneteau's sailboats, twin wheels are standard and note in the image above the high arch for the mainsheet blocks which keeps the boom over 7' (2.13 m) off the cockpit deck. She is powered by a 40-hp diesel and the Beneteau-exclusive "Dock & Go" joystick is optional.  More...

Evinrude E-TEC 250 HO:
Is It For Everyone?

Evinrude E-TEC 250 HO
Top speed – 72.5 mph. Top fuel burn – 26.4 gph. Best cruise – well that depends.

The Evinrude E-TEC 250 HO is a serious workhorse with a lot of bang for the buck. It’s a low maintenance, high performance engine, but is it for everyone? To answer that we put it to the test on a tournament bass boat and found the excellent performance that pros are looking for. But when it comes to cruise performance, that was a bit of a surprise, and we found that there’s something for everyone in these figures. More...

Chaparral 224 Sunesta:
Aggressive Styling for a Deckboat

Chaparral 224 Sunesta
The Chaparral 224 Sunesta has the deckboat layout that carries her 8’6” (2.59 m) beam well forward providing more room in her bow. LOA is 22’4” (6.81 m).

Attractive styling is more than just the icing on the cake. To a large degree it is the cake, and the folks at Chaparral know that. So the challenge at Chaparral was how to take the low-freeboard (and potentially wet), boxy-looking deckboat concept and turn it into something that looked cool on the water. The builder's answer was not to have low freeboard and not to make her boxy. Then to add style, curves, graphics, and Chaparrals iconic three engine air intake ports in a package that is all eye candy. More...

Volvo Penta OceanX:
An Outdrive Designed for Saltwater

Volvo Penta OceanX
The OceanX is an outdrive that was designed to answer many of the challenges facing drive units of today’s higher performing engines.

Few components work harder than the outdrives on our boats. Transferring the power of a large engine, through two 90-degree turns, to dual counter-rotating propellers under salt water, capable of handling heavy loads and high torque is not easy task... and it’s a wonder they hold up at all. Volvo Penta has taken on the job of creating a more durable and reliable outdrive built for the rigors of the saltwater environment: the result is the OceanX. While nothing may stop the onslaught of corrosion and wear and tear, the OceanX slows it to a crawl and should prolong lower unit life far beyond conventional gear. More...

New Bayliner 190 DB:
Redesigned with Outboard Power

 Bayliner 190 DB
The Bayliner 190 DB has a LOA of 18’7” (5.66 m) and a beam of 8’1” (2.46 m) making her as easy to transport to and from the water as she is to handle across the water.

For years Bayliner has been focusing on deckboat design with sterndrive power, but times are changing. Customer feedback points to a different direction and Bayliner is a company that listens to its customers. The 190 DB is part of a newly designed series of deckboats with more room, more functionality and outboard power. On our tests we reached a top speed of 35.8 mph with only a 115 4-stroke bolted to the transom. More...

Shurhold Serious Shine:
101 Uses

Shurhold Products
Shurhold’s Serious Shine may have 101 uses, but this clip highlights some of the more common.

One of our test captains is so obsessive compulsive that he hasn’t met a boat he didn’t think needed cleaning, even when fresh from the factory. For him, a spray can of Serious Shine is like a breath of fresh air. It can be used anywhere and on anything, especially if it’s the type of item that has to have care and cleaning instructions shipped with it. Of course we mean isinglass curtains, touch screen plotters, and other delicates. For detailed product information, visit here...
