If you have a boat, you have metals that are being exposed to a harsh salt water environment. We all can relate to the rusted screw, bolt, windlass safety pin, and various other metal parts on our boats and trailers. Royal Purple recently asked us to test their Maxfilm product and report back our opinion. One of the claims from Royal Purple is that “Maxfilm leaves an exceptionally tough and durable lubricating film for improved operation and long-lasting protection against wear, rust and corrosion.” Here is what we found.
Not being the easiest type of products to test, we tried to devise some real world situations that boaters can relate to. The first thing we did was spray it on an anchor shackle we had that was rusted tight and would not move. We soaked it with the Maxfilm and left it for a day, when we can back, we were able to loosen it, with some effort, with our fingers. So far, go good.
After a few years of use in salt water, the rust had fused the two parts together.
After a good soaking with the Maxfilm, both parts of the shackle came free.
The next thing we did was clean off three lug nuts from a wheel on our trailer with a wire brush. We left one nut alone, sprayed the other with a well known brand, and then sprayed the third with Maxfilm and then reinstalled them. After a week, and four trips to the launch ramp, we took a look. Here are the results. You can clearly see that the Maxfilm provided a meaningful amount of corrosion protection, more so than the well known brand, and far better than the untreated bolt.
Three lug nuts from a boat trailer wheel after a week. Note the rust on the inside rim of the Maxfilm nut where the product was not applied.
We found that the price for this product at retailed ranged from $5.25 to $7.75 for a 4 oz. can compared to the well known brand which ranged from $2.99 to $4.39 for a 4 oz can. Given the results of our use, we think it’s worth the extra cost.
Maxfilm is a multipurpose, synthetic lubricant that excels in many applications.
It deeply penetrates, cleans and loosens rusted parts.
It’s recommended for:
- Loosening stuck parts such as nuts, bolts, locks, hinges, etc.
- Lubricating power tools, hinges, chains, rollers, open gears, fishing tackle, lawn
equipment and more.
- Preserving and protecting parts in storage against rust and corrosion.
- Acting as a manual cutting fluid for easier hand drilling, tapping, metal cutting,
etc., of both steel and aluminum.
