Volvo Says Its New OceanX Is Better Than SeaCore - 06/17/2009

“OceanX easily achieves the highest corrosion protection level over any available system,” says the Volvo Penta project manager of OceanX, John Marsh. That is a nice way of saying that OceanX is better than MerCruiser’s SeaCore system which was introduced over two years ago. We’re told by a Volvo Penta spokesman that in accelerated saltwater life-cycle “scratch tests” without sacrificial anodes, that OceanX’s corrosion resistance is four times greater than the MerCruiser coating solution. That is because the titanium-ceramic coating has permeated the aluminum molecules, according to the Volvo spokesman, which greatly slows both the speed and depth of “corrosion creep.” The OceanX system includes fresh water cooling as well as the addition of two important water-intrusion sensors, one in the lower gear case and the other in the universal joint bellows. The suggested retail price of the new product is $2,990.

Volvo says that the new drive offers technological innovations for increased performance, environmental care, safety and easy maintenance. OceanX is designed for select Volvo Penta gasoline and diesel engines. It replaces Volvo’s “Ocean Series” anti-corrosion solution which was to encapsulate the lower unit in a composite casing which was introduced in 2001.

MerCruiser’s 2007 introduction of SeaCore was in response to Volvo’s anti-corrosion Ocean Series product. The MerCruiser SeaCore system uses hard anodizing of the aluminum which increases the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface to increase corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Resistance Technology

The OceanX uses SOTA electro-deposit technology to apply a titanium-ceramic coating that greatly improves the corrosion resistance of the aluminum castings making it perfect for the saltwater environment, said a Volvo spokesman. “This highly durable and flexible coating covers the entire drive for maximum protection. It is chromate free and environmentally friendly.”

Unique Sensor Protection

The OceanX drive also includes two new features never before incorporated on a stern drive package. A new stern drive oil sensor warns the boater when drive oil is low or contaminated with water. Another sensor mounts in the universal joint bellows between the OceanX drive and the boat transom. This sensor sounds a warning if water has entered that critical area and may lead to failure.
