NEW Glacier Bay 3080
Has Diesel I/O

30-footer Now Powered
with I/O Propulsion

At 23 mph, the sterndrive-powered Glacier Bay 3080 gets nearly 2 miles to the gallon, according to the company.

With all the talk these days about the new big outboards, the last thing you'd expect is for a builder to begin offering an outboard-powered boat as an inboard-outboard. Well, Glacier Bay has done it. The new 30-foot Isle Runner from the Monroe, WA, builder is powered with twin 260-hp Yanmar diesels with MerCruiser Bravo 3 Drives. (The company will continue offering an outboard version of this boat.) Find out why GB thought this alternative propulsion package was necessary... click here

Boat Owners Save DIY Boatyard

Hurricane Cove Boatyard—shown here in 1943 as Nutas Boatyard—will survive another day thanks to a Florida court ruling that struck down a proposed condominium development on the site. Hurricane Cove is the only DIY boatyard left in all of Miami-Dade County.

Miami River Boaters Fight
Condo Developer—and Win;
Such Efforts Needed
Across Entire Nation

Two Florida boaters proved that if you speak loud enough people will listen.

Their grass-roots efforts sparked a movement that led to a Florida court's decision that stopped a developer from tearing down the last do-it-yourself boatyard in all of Miami-Dade County and building ugly condos along the Miami River.

"This was a huge victory for boat owners," said Tom Kimen, who works on his Mako and Contender at Hurricane Cove Boatyard. "It proves that we can make a difference." Find out how

Buckle Up—Even if George Doesn't
PWC Riders Are
Worst Offenders at
Wearing PFDs Properly

Former President George Bush and the Secret Service agent are not wearing their inflatable PFDs properly: they are open in the front with the buckles unfastened.

Boaters need to remember to buckle their PFDs—and buckle them properly—to maximize their usefulness. Personal watercraft riders in particular often forget to buckle up, or have become indifferent about wearing them correctly, says Dan McCormick of the Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety. The consequences can be deadly. To read more... click here.

We Test 6 Big Center Consoles
The Ultimate Outboard Fishing Machines.
Compare Features,
Performance, and Price of 31+ Footers

The heavily built Regulator 32FS is one of the smoothest-riding large center consoles on the market. We tested it with twin 250-hp Yamaha four-strokes.
Four or 5 years ago, most of the largest center console boats maxed out at roughly 33 feet. Today, major fishboat builders are pushing the LOA envelope, pumping out open boats of nearly 40 feet. One of the reasons is that engine manufacturers are introducing higher-horsepower outboards. We now have three engine makers that sell outboards with 300 or more horses: Mercury, Suzuki, and Yamaha. (We hear that Evinrude will soon unveil its 300-hp two-stroke).

When buying a CC, there are a multitude of factors to consider. At BoatTEST, we've put a half dozen big center consoles through their paces. Compare performance, deck layouts, fishing equipment, pricing, and ride quality.

The names are well-known: Regulator, Hydra-Sports, Wellcraft... see our tests

The Cure for Anything Is Salt Water: How I Threw My Life Overboard and Found Happiness at Sea by Mary South

A mid-life crisis and a sense of adventure caused this author to take up residence on a steel-hull trawler she bought before knowing how to captain it and set sail from Florida to Maine. Her clear-eyed perspective and involving stories keep the narrative moving. This small but well-observed memoir is a worthwhile read for anyone stuck in the workaday rut.
