New Ferretti 881 Motoryacht
The Ferretti 881 Motoryacht is a Mk II version of the beautiful 880 which was introduced several years ago. The big difference is the master stateroom which is the most innovative we have ever seen in this size motoryacht.  The boat is full of practical innovations such as the "teak beach" and a separate room for ship's systems equipment.  Overall the engineering and the attention to detail is second to none. See review and read article. Video #1 on interior living spaces. Video #2 on flying bridge, "teak beach" engine room and crew's quarters.

World Cat 270 TE
For tournament capability, great handling and rough water fishing, the 270TE from World Cat is hard to beat. This catamaran provides an ideal fishing platform for the serious angler. The TE version we tested had an optional fiberglass top. We have tested the World Cat 270TE before, but I was pleased to test this model again with twin BF225 horsepower Honda outboards, which had some serious power. As expected, World Cat performed with precision and proved her offshore design is not only rugged, but comfortable enough to bring along the family on your outings. To view test click here

New Laguna B-190
The Laguna B-190 has 360-degrees of fishability and is powered with Mercury's 115-hp EFI Four-Stroke outboard. The layout offers dedicated casting space at the bow and the stern. The Deluxe Center Console features six vertical rod holders, Mercury SmartCraft SC1000, and room for more electronics. The best part is that the package deal includes the boat, motor and trailer and comes in at a price that competes with others that still lack many of the items which are on Laguna's standard list. Everglades 350CC

In case you haven't noticed, there are almost as many CC-builders as there are customers these days.  Not only that, but  because the competition is so keen a dozen or more companies are building truly top-notch boats, and furiously copying each other after the latest boat show. Enter the new Everglade 350 Center Console.  It became one of the boats to check out at the Miami Boat Show, and now we have tested it.  This boat is definitely not for everyone, and that is part of its appeal.

Have The Whole Boat: The Insiders Guide to Private Yacht Charter Vacations, by Kim Kavin

This comprehensive guide to yacht charting notes at the outset that cruise ships have become very popular vacation venues for a group of friends, but that you can charter a yacht, with crew, for six or eight people for the same money or less, and "Have the Whole Boat." Kim, who is a charter columnist for PMY and has her own charter website, covers virtually everything a first-time charter customer should know and has a good list of charter companies to check out in the appendix. She also has a good section on tipping for crewed charters. Most important, you can now charter sailboats all over the world, and she discusses the destinations. Thankfully, the light bulb is beginning to go on in the heads of these companies and powerboats are slowly being added to the fleets around the world. Click here to order the book.

Blue Thunder: How the Mafia Owned and Finally Murdered Cigarette Boat King Donald Aronow by Thomas and Charlene Mitchell Burdick

Talk about a "Cold Case" file, here's one for you. We're told that there is a movie coming out soon on Cigarette's founder (and also the founder of Donzi, Magnum, and several others) -- Don Aronow. If you will recall, Don was murdered in his black Mercedes sports car on 188th street in Miami after a long career of offshore powerboat racing, starting off numerous boat companies, and the invention of the modern high-performance boat. Only a few people really know who actually put out the contract on Don, and they have yet to talk on the record. But the account of his career in this book is as accurate and as close to the truth as you are likely to get. He was undoubtedly the most charismatic person in the boat industry while he was alive and he loved the role he played. Order this book.

Earthrace Picks Up Steam – US/Brazil Make Bio-Fuel Deal
Monday, April 16, 2007
Day:  37
Distance Traveled:  8227 NM
Behind World Record:  3613  NM
The email system on the boat has been out of satellite range for the past 5 days and there has not been a Capt.'s Blog update since April 11.  The boat has cut down its distance behind the record holder by about 400 miles in the last week, so perhaps our luckless friends have a chance. In any case, they are promoting the use of bio-diesel and perhaps the Bush administration decided to jump on the bandwagon.
The US and Brazil account for 70% of the ethanol made in the world and have agreed to share technology. (Or, was this just a Bush photo-op?) FYI – The US has a $0.54 per gallon tariff on imported ethanol. (Brilliant policy!  As they say, "Only in America.")
