Boat Test Videos
Content courtesy ofTwo decades ago Hurricane started the whole notion of a "deckboat," something that caught on quickly because it was big inside and affordable. Now most every sportboat builder has its own version of a deckboat, but few brands have as many different models as Hurricane -- 38 models ranging from 18' to 26' (5.48 to 7.92 m) with most having a 8'6" (2.59 m) beam. There are single consoles, dual consoles, wide consoles, narrow consoles, and now -- center consoles. Mom and the kids can go tubing on Saturday and Dad and his buddies can go fishing on Sunday. What will they think of next?

The Mission of the Hurricane SS 231 OB
Over the years Hurricane deckboats have gained a reputation for maximizing seating capacity, but the SS 231 OB actually reduces seating. In order to fit in a center console and have wide side aisles so anglers, or guests, can pass fore and aft, Hurricane has blown out the midships seating. By creating the two wide "side decks" the builder has opened up the boat making it far easier to move back and forth. Several fishing amenities have been put aboard to entice casual anglers and to create a multi-use boat, but our guess is that most people will be attracted to this model because of all of its deck space. It has a rated capacity for 12 people.

There are two seats behind the console and wide side decks.●
More Head Room.
An optional portable head can be put in the console and because it is higher than the overhead in the dual consoles, there is more head room. ●

Description of the SS 231 OB
Locus of Operation.
This model is the same hull as the SS 232 OB but is different from the other 26 models of Hurricane, although it may look similar at first glance. Like many of the Hurricane deck boats the SS 231 OB has a low freeboard and wide bow that is roughly squared off in order to seat more people. The bottom has a low deadrise aft which makes the boat more stable and faster than a deep-V. This design saves weight, keeps the gunwales low to the water for watersports and is appropriate for rivers and lakes.
Maxing Seating Capacity.
Seating capacity is rated at 12, and 12 people will certainly fit if everyone is sitting up straight. Keep in mind that most Hurricanes are rated from 10 people to 12 no matter how large or small they are and no matter how many linear feet of seating they may have.
The fact is most of the larger Hurricanes can seat more people than they are rated for. The reason for that is that rated seating capacity is a USCG formula that has nothing to do with seats and everything to do with the volume of the boat to its gunwales. No boat, no matter how many seats should be loaded beyond its rating.
No Loss in Capacity.
So, in fact, despite the fact that the SS 231 OB has lost some seating due to the center console, it has not lost any passenger capacity, which is rated at 12. In fact, by the very nature of the way people use the boat and sit on the forward seats that are made for lounging, it is more likely that seven or eight people will sit on the boat, and quite comfortably at that.
