The 170 Montauk feels like a big 17’ (5.18 m) boat because her beam carries so far forward. She has 19” (.48 m) of cockpit depth and the stainless steel side and bow rails help keep kids in the boat. Depending on the intended use, Boston Whaler offers a variety of seating options including a sun lounge that fills in the entire bow area, which is raised off the cockpit sole. The bow anchor locker drains and has a cleat just ahead for attaching the rode.
The center console
dash panel has a tachometer, volt-meter and water pressure gauge, plus the accessory switches. We also like the stainless steel grab rail that encircles the windscreen so passengers won’t grab the acrylic panel to try to steady themselves. An access hatch for the helm rigging is in the port side of the console, which houses the battery in a dedicated box.
Power and Performance
Boston Whaler uses a single Mercury outboard on the 170 Montauk. The minimum horsepower is 60 and standard power is 90-hp. We have not tested the 170 Montauk, but with a 90-hp Mercury 4-stroke outboard, the manufacturer says the boat hits 40.9 mph at 5750 rpm with two people and a nearly full load of fuel. Time to plane is reported at 4.5 seconds and idle to 30 mph is 9.3 seconds. The hull bottom has a deadrise measurement at the transom of 16-degrees. The shallow deadrise helps with planing times and fuel efficiency. Draft is 9” (.22 m).
Boston Whaler has spent years promoting its reputation as the “Unsinkable Legend”. The 170 Montauk is constructed with a solid fiberglass hull bottom and liner and between the two primary pieces, the manufacturer injects flotation foam. The foam bolsters flotation, adds strength and serves as a bonding component.BoatTEST.com has made a video showing this process that we recommend viewing.
Options Worth Considering and Pricing
With a 90-hp Mercury 90 ELPT EFI FourStroke Mercury outboard and galvanized single-axle bunk trailer, the 170 Montauk retails for around $29,903.
Boston Whalers have such a loyal following because they last and it’s our experience that they hold their value. The 90-hp outboard should give the 170 Montauk the necessary power to handle myriad tasks including fishing, cruising or towing. That she comes on a trailer for less than $30,000 also makes her an affordable boat for a family on a budget.
