What more could you ask for when you head out for a day of sport trailer boating than sunshine, moderate temperatures, and low humidity? Plenty of cold drinks, a good sandwich for lunch and close friends is about all I can add.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Seattle, Washington area and Lake Stephens to see how Maxum’s 1800 MX measured up for you. After chatting with the U.S. Marine folks for a few hours and seeing if we could see more than fifty feet in the heavy fog, we finally glimpsed some sunshine and broke out the cameras. Seattle is not only known for rain, but apparently is known for the fog as well! Fog burns off, rain soaks. We appreciated the fog for a change.
While another captain worked with two other models from U.S. Marine, I hooked up the test gear and created a little wake action of my own. This 1800 was introduced for 2003 as the entry-level sport boat in the Maxum lineup. She is 17’6” in length and 7’0” in beam. Add her weight and you have a nice sport boat that is pretty easy to tow behind most family vehicles and slips in to most garages and carports.
The 1800 has a fully glassed-in liner for strength and a softer ride, although I thought she was also a noisy ride. Maybe if you add some carpeting she wouldn’t transmit as much noise. She has some neat features that aren’t as obvious like bolting in the cleats from underneath so no ugly screw heads show. Stainless steel backing plates are used, albeit thin, but better than aluminum, especially in a saltwater environment.
Up front she has thickly padded seating with safety grab bars for underway security. Storage is under the seating and drains into the bilges. Non-skid flooring throughout insure good footing when moving about on wet floors. The walk-through windshield is plenty wide and is cushioned by a large bumper when flipped open.
The companion seat is an upgraded sun lounger with a spring-loaded handle for release and locking the seat in the upright position. The glove box drains overboard if you have water to seep in. A nice Clarion stereo and CD player will keep your favorite tunes going all day long. Across from the companion seat is a sporty helm pod. European style analog instruments and moisture protected paddle switches are arranged in good view from the bucket style swivel and slide adjustable seat. Between the seats is an over-sized wake board locker and wet storage area in the sole.
Cockpit space is huge so you don’t feel cramped even when you carry her maximum capacity. You only rub knees when you want to here! The rear seats are separated with a hinged engine pod lid with gas assist arms. Seat backs remove for access to the battery and other mechanicals. Inside the engine pod, the 3.0L engine has a remote oil change hose and engine block flushing hoses standard. Be careful to reattach those blue flush hoses before you launch and run the engine again, or you may fill the compartment with water and watch your prize sink a little to far into the water! When you change the oil, use two wrenches to pull the extended plug. If the hose is not held tight while turning the plug, the entire hose can loosen from the oil pan and drain the oil while underway. The unhappy result will be a fried engine and a few fried nerves to go with it.
It was off from the docks and I was testing this jewel in her element. She handled nicely. I felt some counter torque through the wheel when turning at higher speeds and she had a habit of cavitations in tight turns at speed. Once I figured this out, I throttled back a bit more and she did just fine. The 3-liter engine does a good job on this model. She punched out of the hole in a bit over 3 seconds and was passing through 30 mph in just over 7 seconds. Cruising along at 3000 rpm, she consumed 4.8 gph at 23.8 mph. With her 18-gallon fuel tank, I could expect about 80 miles of pleasurable cruising with my friends before refueling and restocking the coolers.

All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.
