IPS500 (370-hp)
Diesel - The IPS system from Volvo is an application of the POD drive system that has been in existence on commercial ships for many years. The 370-hp IPS500 is one of five diesel systems available from Volvo Penta.
Volvo Penta IPS – Inboard Performance System – is a new propulsion system. Thanks to joystick controls, the IPS makes docking much easier and in our opinion, safer for less experienced boaters.
In addition to handling, IPS has some other big advantages: noise and vibration are greatly reduced, and exhaust gases are directed out through the drive units underwater. IPS also appears to provide significantly reduced fuel consumption; cruising range is also greatly improved.

To: R.ArikianThere's only one explanation to your problem; garbage behind the helm...

I have IPS 500 and the seawater strainers are defectively designed. First, they are placed after the water pump. Second, the strainer buckets are cheap plastic with a screw down top. Third, the buckets leak at high rpm causing overspray in the bilge. This leads to rust on multiple parts including pulleys, alternator, even engine mounts. I've had to spend several thousand in repairs because of Volvo's defective design. Very dissapointing.

Tell the CEO of Volvo that I for one would rather a straight drive system over the IPS system. I've had my "steering" go out while leaving a dock and I was about 5 feet away from rocks. I could only go forward or back. With counter rotating props you don't have any torque to rotate. I magically avoided the rocks and turned off the engines and started up again and all was OK. There was never any diagnosis why it failed.
