Volvo Penta IPS Captain's Report

Volvo Penta IPS – Inboard Performance System – is a new propulsion system. Volvo claims IPS will dramatically increased efficiency compared to inboard shafts, and offers higher top speed, and faster acceleration. Based on the boats tested by BoatTEST.com recently, this appears to be the case. It also appears to provide significantly reduced fuel consumption; cruising range is also greatly improved. Car-like maneuvering, thanks to joystick controls, makes docking much easier and in our opinion, safer for less experienced boaters.

Many factors still rely on how individual boat manufactures design and install the IPS system, but for the most part we can validate Volvo’s claims that the system will minimize vibrations and sound and produces virtually no detectable exhaust fumes. IPS also helps to retaining the traditional inboard befits, such as propellers under the hull and extensive use of bronze and stainless steel. The Volvo Penta IPS is helping to changing boating for the better.
