Evinrude designed the new E-TEC G2 150 H.O. to be as state-of-the-art as possible. And, in our opinion, they have succeeded because of their direct fuel-injection, internal dynamic power steering, digital gear shifting, internal oil tank, heavy duty gear case, and many other features. Evinrude tells us that it has 30% more peak torque and best-in-class fuel economy. Certainly, it has the cleanest reportable emissions on the market.
The engine is designed for runabouts and pontoon boats, as well as bass and multi-species boats for freshwater fishing. In saltwater, it is intended for bay boats and center consoles, in both single and twin applications.
The engine has more than 100 fewer parts than a comparable four-stroke. It requires no break-in and can go up to 500 hours before routine maintenance is required, and it has a five-year warranty, including corrosion.With a torque advantage over four-stroke engines, the two-stroke E-TEC G2 150 H.O. delivers strong hole shots for watersports on boats like this Campion Chase 550 OB.
Distinguishing Features• High torque at low- and mid-range RPM
High Torque. When compared to four-stroke engines, the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. has high torque at the low- and mid-rpm ranges. This phenomenon is not magic, nor is it marketing hype. Because this engine is two-stroke, every stroke is a power stroke -- not every other stroke. That means that it is fast out of the hole -- something that bass-boat owners and wakeboard towing enthusiasts care about.
Because it has more power in the mid-rpm range than conventional four-stroke engines, it can keep a boat on plane at lower rpm -- burning less fuel -- than an equal horsepower four-stroke engine. This means greater range for saltwater fishermen who need to cover lots of ground to get to the fishing grounds and back. It also means less money spent at the pump.Having the ability to match the motor’s color to the boat makes the pair look like a more complete package.
Maximum Output. According to manufacturing guidelines established by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), an outboard motor can produce 10 percent more or less horsepower than its rating. This means that output can range from 135- to 165-hp, and the engine can still be called a 150-hp. The H.O. designation on an Evinrude product means that the motor is tuned to a plus 10% rating, so a 150 H.O. will make closer to 165-hp.
Easy Access. Now, let’s take a look inside the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O., starting from the top and working our way down. After removing the top panel, an owner can easily see the fill for the three-gallon two-stroke oil reservoir, which is the largest on board tank in the industry. Most conventional outboard engines have a remote tank installed somewhere in the boat. Also forward beneath the top panel are posts that can be used to jumpstart the motor if the battery dies.With the top panel removed, we see the posts for jumpstarting the motor and the yellow oil fill cap.
Magneto Power. Not easily seen, but vitally important is the magneto on the top of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. Because of its design, the charging system eliminates the need for belts or pulleys. It makes 133 Amps of power, 50 of which are available to charge the battery and run on board accessories. That is far more output than is found on most outboards in class.The magneto-style alternator is located on top of the motor and has no pulleys or belts, making it essentially a maintenance-free charging system.
The Block. The E-TEC G2 150 H.O.’s powerhead is built from a 167-cid (2.7-liter/2,774cc) 66-degree V-shaped aluminum six-cylinder block. It has a bore and stroke of 3.386” x 3.100” (86mm x 78.7 mm). Instead of following the traditional path of integrating direct injection fuel systems to carbureted engines, Evinrude designed the G2 engine around their E-TEC direct injection system. This allowed them to optimize the air intake, combustion chamber and exhaust system to maximize efficiency. This resulted in increased power and torque with lower emissions and fuel consumption. To improve corrosion resistance, stainless steel is used extensively and wherever possible. Another corrosion inhibitor is the titanium oxide coating that is electro-statically applied to the lower unit.The gray coating on the exhaust adaptor is titanium oxide that is applied to improve corrosion resistance. This port is threaded for attaching a garden hose to flush the engine with fresh water.
Direct-Injection. The E-TEC G2 engines are designed to achieve maximum efficiency with direct fuel-injection. Each cylinder has its own injector, and the six spark plugs are positioned close to the injectors because it improves combustion quality. The EMM (Engine Management Module) controls the fuel delivery and air intake to ensure the cleanest burn, producing the most power and best fuel mileage.This is a close-up of one of the direct fuel injectors for the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. The injector can pulse up to 100 times per second. This illustration shows the cylinder compressing the air-fuel mixture prior to the spark plug igniting. Note close proximity of the injector to the sparkplug. This is the engine’s brain, the Electronic Management Module or EMM. To help it maintain consistent operating temperatures, it’s cooled by raw water.
Starboard Side Inspection. With the starboard side panel removed, the first thing most people will notice is the three-gallon (11.4-liter) two-stroke oil tank. It’s equipped with a digital sending unit that keeps the operator apprised with accurate level information. Right next to the sender is an on board fuse box that contains a backup fuse. Forward to starboard is the motor’s starter.The three-gallon (11.4-L) tank for two-stroke oil lasts around 50 hours before needing a refill. Forward, the switches with the red arrows are for remote trim. Clockwise from the lower left, the oil-sending unit is on top of the three-gallon tank. Just above is the fuse panel and forward is the starter.
Port Side Inspection. With the panel on the engine’s port side removed, we found the fuel-vapor separator and diaphragm ahead of the fuel water separator. Just abaft was the lower unit gear lube bottle with the three injectors and spark plugs aft.The white object in the center of the photo is the fuel-water separator and the bottle for the lower unit gear lube is clear so owners can stay apprised of the quality and quality of the fluid. The fuel vapor separator ensures that quality fuel is delivered to the injectors and eliminates vapor lock.
Mid-Section – Advanced Design. The Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. is the only E-TEC G2 engine with a choice of midsections and steering systems available. The E-TEC G2 midsection includes Evinrude’s integrated dynamic power steering and their extremely clean dual axis rigging system, which contains all the wires and harnesses in 1 tube.
This advanced midsection also contains the hydraulic rams for the i-Trim system and has a substantially larger tilt tube that better supports the motor and allows it to be trimmed 81-degrees to fully get it out of saltwater when at a slip or on a mooring.
Mid-Section -- Conventional TRAC Design. The Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. has the option of conventional steering with the TRAC midsection. It is perfect for repower applications where there is an existing external steering mechanism. This makes the unit 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) lighter and lower cost to the consumer.The hydraulic rotary actuator and power assist pump for the steering system are contained in the E-TEC G2 advanced midsection, which protects them from saltwater and creates a much cleaner profile for the motor. The larger diameter tilt tube provides better support for the engine when it’s tilted up. The TRAC midsection has a conventional tilt tube and steering cable. It also has the modern clean rigging tube.
More Robust Gearcase.Like all E-TEC G2 models, the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. comes with Evinrude’s SLX gearcase. It’s designed to house more robust gears, yet it’s streamlined to improve hydrodynamic efficiency. The leading edge is designed to slice cleanly through the water and to keep weeds off the two low-water pickups on each side of the lower unit.
A larger anti-ventilation plate helps improve planing times, and Evinrude designed the skeg with a camber that eliminates the need for an adjustable trim tab. The Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. comes with 2.17:1 reduction gear in the lower unit and is available in 20” (50.8 cm) and 25” (63.5 cm) shaft lengths.
Most important, the gearcase is the same one used on the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300-hp engines. This means that it can take the abuse that naturally results when running at high-speed offshore in rough conditions.The SLX gearcase has two water pickups per side to ensure that the motor gets sufficient cooling water.
Digital Throttle and Shift. One of the more noteworthy features of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. is that the motor comes standard with digital shift and throttle. Using digital controls also facilitates rigging and eliminates long cables and linkages that are exposed to corrosion. The digital controls also let owners of multi-engine installations easily sync their motors.
No Clunk. The Evinrude digital system eliminates the “clunk” that is heard with most conventional engines when changing gears.In this cutaway drawing, we see the arrows pointing at the digital shifting unit at the front of the gearcase as well as the lower unit gears.
Self-Winterizing. Evinrude makes it easy to winterize the E-TEC G2 150 H.O. by building the engine with a self-winterizing feature. When it’s time to put away the boat for the winter, hit the self-winterize function and that’s it. If an unexpected warm day pops up, the engine can be quickly de-winterized and then put away again when the temperature drops. This saves a trip to the outboard dealer -- and the resulting bill.
Real World Testing
We tested the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. on a number of boats. Below are the results.

Color Choices. The most obvious difference between the new Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines and other outboards on the market is their appearance. The E-TEC G2 engines have lightweight polymer side panels that secure with quarter-turn-style fasteners and a lightweight top panel that latches in place. The individual pieces are much lighter than conventional cowlings and come in six color choices -- including Mossy Oak camo -- with 14 available accent graphics.With the exception of the Mossy Oak, the same color combinations that are available on the Evinrude E-TEC G2 250 H.O. come on the E-TEC G2 150 H.O., too.
The Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. engine is not required to have service for five years or 500 hours, whichever comes first. This results in a huge savings in maintenance costs over most engine brands.Techno-junkies can get E-Link so they can keep an eye on engine functions -- and activate them so long as the engine is on -- with a smart phone.
