From its first technical drawing, Evinrude designed the new E-TEC G2 175 HP specifically for direct fuel injection. The 66-degree block, cylinders, and fuel injectors are all state-of-the-art and designed to optimize the fuel delivery system. But that’s just the tip of the technology iceberg with this engine. It also features integrated hydraulic steering with power assist, automatic trim, digital gear shifting, and the same heavy-duty gearcase as the larger models in the E-TEC G2 lineup.
Evinrude says the best application for this engine is offshore fishing boats, such as center or dual-console boats and freshwater fishing boats because it has 30% more peak torque and best-in-class fuel economy that lets an angler venture farther offshore without having to spend more on gas. The E-TEC G2 175 HP also has the cleanest reportable emissions. Because of the extremely efficient E-TEC direct injection 2-stroke technology this engine has an edge in fuel economy making it a good choice for center consoles like this Key West 244CC.
For ease of maintenance, the E-TEC G2 175 HP has more than 100 fewer parts than a comparable 4-stroke. It requires no break-in and can go 5 years or 500 hours before routine maintenance is required, and it has a five-year warranty.
When compared to 4-stroke engines the Evinrude E-TEC G2 175 HP produces more torque through more of the engine’s power band. Because it’s a 2-stroke, every stroke is a power stroke -- not every other stroke. That means it has the power to push larger center consoles through ocean waves.
That added torque in the lower- and mid-RPM ranges also means the engine can keep a boat on plane at lower rpm than a 4-stroke of equal power. This means greater range for saltwater fishermen who need to cover lots of ground to get to the fishing grounds and back. It also means less money spent at the pump.
As we stated earlier, the new Evinrude E-TEC G2 motors starts with a newly designed powerhead. It has a 167-cid (2.7-liter.274cc) 66-degree V-shaped aluminum block with a bore and stroke of 3.386” x 3.100” (86mm x 78.7 mm). To improve corrosion resistance, many on board components are stainless steel, and midsection housing and exhaust system are coated in titanium oxide that is electrostatically applied.
Each E-TEC G2 engine is designed to achieve maximum efficiency with direct fuel injection. As the words would imply, each cylinder has its own injector, and the six spark plugs are positioned close to the injectors to improve combustion quality. The Engine Management Module (EMM) controls the motor’s operating functions, including fuel delivery to ensure that the air to fuel mixture remains optimum for conditions.
Now let’s look more closely at the E-TEC G2 175 HP from the inside, starting at the top. After releasing the trigger-style latch to remove the top panel, an owner can easily see the fill for the three-gallon two-stroke oil reservoir, which is the largest on board tank in the industry. Evinrude says an owner should be able to get approximately 50 hours out of a tank of oil. Most conventional outboard engines have a remote tank installed somewhere in the boat. Also forward beneath the top panel are posts that can be used to jumpstart the motor if the battery dies.
Keeping the oil tank in mind, when we removed the motor’s starboard-side polymer panel, it was the first thing we saw. As mentioned above, it holds three gallons (11.35 L) and is equipped with a digital sending unit on top that supplies level information to the helm. Right next to the sender is a water-resistant on board fuse box that contains a backup fuse. Forward to starboard is the motor’s starter.
With the panel on the engine’s port side removed, we saw the bottle just ahead of the three fuel injectors and spark plugs. Continuing forward, there is a fuel-water separator, a fuel-pump diaphragm, and the fuel-vapor separator.
Evinrude’s E-TEC G2 midsection is a major design advance in outboard steering systems. There are no external cables to connect. The hydraulic steering unit is integrated into the midsection housing. Hydraulic lines connect to the midsection with standard-sized fittings and Evinrude’s Dynamic Power Steering.
The midsection also contains the hydraulic rams for the i-Trim system and has a substantially larger tilt tube that better supports the motor and allows it to be trimmed 81-degrees to fully get it out of saltwater when at a slip or on a mooring. Up top, the patented Dual Axis Rigging tube contains all the wires and harnesses. The result is a much cleaner stern, especially when multiple engines are installed.
All E-TEC G2 motors have the SLX gearcase. It has a larger anti-ventilation plate to accommodate the larger propellers the engine can turn. The leading edge is intended to slice through the water with more hydrodynamic efficiency and to cut through any weeds so the two water pickups on each side of the lower unit don’t clog. The skeg is designed with a camber to offset propeller torque, eliminating the need for an adjustable trim tab. The E-TEC G2 175 HP comes with 2.17:1 reduction gear in the lower unit and is available in 20” (50.8 cm) and 25” (63.5 cm) shaft lengths. Inside, the SLX gearcase has more robust gears to withstand the punishment of offshore runs.
The E-TEC G2 175 HP comes standard with digital shift and throttle, and the shift module is actually located in the forward section of the SLX gearcase. The digital shifting system eliminates the “clunk” that is heard with most conventional engines when changing gears. Additionally, using digital controls facilitates rigging and eliminates long cables and linkages that are exposed to corrosion. The digital controls also let owners of multi-engine installations easily sync their motors.
Evinrude builds the E-TEC G2 175 HP with an auto-winterizing feature. At the end of the season, hit the auto-winterize function and that’s it. If an unexpected warm day pops up, the engine can be quickly de-winterized and then put away again when the temperatures drop. This saves a trip to the outboard dealer -- and the resulting bill. The back of the motor also has a threaded inlet that accepts a garden hose to facilitate freshwater flushing.
The E-TEC G2 175 HP engine is not required to have service for five years or 500 hours, whichever comes first. This results in a huge savings in maintenance costs over most engine brands.
The most obvious difference between the Evinrude E-TEC G2s and other outboards on the market is their appearance. The E-TEC G2s have lightweight polymer side panels that secure with quarter-turn-style fasteners and a lightweight top panel that latches in place. The individual panels are much lighter than conventional cowlings and come in five color choices -- including Mossy Oak -- with 14 available accent graphics.

The Evinrude E-TEC G2 175 HP has plenty offer owners of center consoles and other boats as well. We already mentioned the benefits of the added torque and fuel efficiency when it comes to tackling offshore conditions and extending a boat’s range.
From a drivability perspective, it’s the only motor that we know of in this class that comes standard with integrated hydraulic steering, automatic trim, and digital shift and throttle control. The fact that it requires no break-in and the first service interval is 5 years or 500 hours makes the motor even easier town.
