Four Winns H190 (2006-) Captain's Report

Step-Up Affordability

Four Winns H190

By Captain Keith Burton

Test Captain

Anytime a boat buyer starts looking for a new boat his emotion is often out-flanked by the black and white of what it will cost. So it is especially wonderful when you come across a boat that is a step above an entry-level in size, with the performance and style you want, but still keeps the dollars at bay. That brings us to the 2006 Four Winns H190, which is the subject of this review.

Sitting at the dock the 190 strikes a sleek stylish pose with attractive graphics matched to graceful yet sporty lines. The bow seats that wrap around the interior are soft to the touch yet feel durably heavy to last many seasons of sun. Four Winns says their vinyl is unique with its own name, which they call Aquaflex.

As you would expect, there is storage beneath the seats, we particularly like that the seats are hinged, so they won’t be flying off at high speed or during rough seas. The storage compartments are fully lined and drained too. At the bow seat, there is storage for an anchor and rope, which is another nice touch in this boat.

Stainless steel fittings are used throughout, including pop-up cleats and handholds. The handholds at the bow are integrated into the upper edge of the gunnels and add to the sleek styling of this boat.

The walkthrough windshield is wide enough to prevent jabbing from the windshield edges. The deck is fully fiberglassed with a non-skid surface. A full snap-in carpet that is available as an option, makes for easy clean up after a day at the beach.

Cabin Features

The main cabin seating provides room for the captain and four others. The helm is attractively laid out with black on white gauges with a chrome bezel and set within a turned-metal looking plastic dash, which is a nice modern departure from fake wood. Lighted rocker switches control the auxiliary electrics and a thickly padded tilt steering wheel is standard.

The H190 is available with two foldout seats port and starboard, or with a sporty bucket seat for the captain. Our boat had the bucket seat, which can also swivel and move forward and back. With the bucket seat, you gain a bit more walk around room, which would be appreciated by skiers and when moving about the boat while fishing.

The passenger seat is a forward and rear facing seat that folds out to form a sun lounge. The passenger console contains a large compartment that has room for papers, but primarily protects an excellent-sounding Sirius satellite-ready AM/FM/CD radio. Unlike many boats in this class, the glove box is lockable.

Innovative Thinking

At the stern are two jump seats that flank the engine cover. Here Four Winns’ engineers show some out-of-the-box thinking. The seats can be configured in three different ways. They can be used as seats, mounted low, or flipped over to be used as a step for getting aboard, as the opposite side of the cushion has a non-skid surface.

The jump seats can also be installed at a higher position that matches the height of the pad on the engine cover. This position provides a full-width sun pad at the stern, a pretty nice set up.

The engine cover also has some great thinking behind it. There is a hatch built into the top of the engine cover to provide access for routine checks of the engine oil, belts, and fittings. But if you need to remove the whole engine cover, it only takes the release of two thumb screws mounted at the deck.

Performance

Over the water the Four Winns H190 tracks straight without undue wandering. The steering is somewhat heavy, but appropriate for this class of boat. We saw a top speed of 47.4 mph and a quick 0 to 30 mph of 6.6 seconds, which is plenty of power and speed for skiers and wakeboarders.

The 190 handles wakes and moderate waves with confidence, but this is not a heavy seas boat. Its best use is within lakes, bays and rivers, or near shore.

Overall, the 2006 Four Winns H190 offers a considerable value in an affordable 18-foot runabout. Plenty of upscale features, a roomy cabin, great fit and finish with materials that should take seasons of use. It is also fun to pilot and offers a sporty, modern look that will turn some eyes at the dock.
