Regal 2200 Bowrider Captain's Report

A Luxurious Bowrider with Style and Performance

By Capt. Vincent Daniello

Regal’s 2200 is the company’s new luxuriously appointed bowrider. Built with quality hardware and advanced construction techniques, this boat is designed to look great and perform well for years to come.

Construction

The hull, deck, and stringer system are fabricated entirely from fiberglass and synthetic coring, with no wood to rot or decay. For hatch covers and to back upholstered panels, Regal uses various synthetic products such as Pro-Panel and Starboard. In rare instances where the company uses wood (I could not find any on the 2200), Regal employs ultra-tough marine plywood called Perma-Panel, which is completely encapsulated to seal out moisture, and backed with a lifetime warranty against rotting or warping.

While many manufacturers apply colored tape to a completed hull, Regal’s hull graphics are colored gelcoat, applied to the inside of the mold before the fiberglass is laid. The resulting smooth hull has no tape to peel or scratch, and can be waxed and buffed repeatedly without damaging the graphics. Vinyl upholstery is “french stitched” heavy weight fabric, formulated to resist the sun and stains.

All hardware is stainless steel, including six pull-up cleats, stainless steel grab rails, stainless bimini top supports, and a stainless ski-tow pylon. The windshield header is polished stainless steel, and the windshield is fabricated from just three sections, two curved sides and a center hinged walkthrough. This high-tech design eliminates the corner posts that obstruct the driver’s visibility on most boats. The stainless steel, telescoping boarding ladder is recessed beneath a locking fiberglass hatch on the swim platform. Most engine packages even include a stainless steel propeller for durability and increased performance, especially “out of the hole.”

Layout

The layout is mostly traditional, with a few pleasant surprises. The bow area features well-padded back and side rests with recessed drink holders and grab-rails. The seat bottoms hinge open to reveal storage lockers, and are unexpectedly held up by pneumatic stays. Storage beneath the windshield is accessed from the bow as well. The forward walk-through is closed off by the hinged center section of the windshield and a double-door beneath the windshield for complete protection from wind and spray.

The driver and passenger seats swivel, slide, and include flip-up thigh bolsters for comfort whether sitting or standing. The helm features a tilt wheel, chrome-bezeled gauges, and well placed controls. The locking glove box in the passenger dash provides protection for the Stereo/CD player as well as keys, wallets, or cellular phones.

In the back of the cockpit, the L-shaped lounge also includes hinged seat bottoms with pneumatic stays to access storage lockers beneath. Aft of the lounge, the sunpad features a filler cushion that spans the walk-through to the transom for a full-length sun lounge. Additional storage is located under the gunnels, beneath the aft walk-through, and in the cockpit sole, with drink holders and handrails scattered throughout the boat.

Performance

Performance was equally impressive with a top speed of 54.7 miles-per-hour at 4800 RPM from our test boat’s 320 horsepower Volvo 5.7 Gxi. We planed off in 3.5 seconds, and reached 30 miles-per-hour in 6.2 seconds. Our most economical speed was 31.1 miles-per-hour at 3000 RPM, burning 8.4 gallon-per-hour. That worked out to 3.72 miles-per-gallon for a range of 181 miles from a 54 gallon fuel tank (with a 10% reserve.)

The boat handled nicely and trimmed out well, thanks in part to Regal’s extended hull sides and integrated swim platform. The last two feet of the boat look almost like a catamaran’s twin-hull. This design feature places the out-drive in a pocket beneath the swim platform and provides extra lift in the stern. More importantly, it keeps the out-drive and propeller forward of the stern of the boat, greatly enhancing safety.
