We recorded a top speed of 47.1 mph from the Volvo 4.3 GXi power plant. At 4000 rpm the 201 was running along at about 40 mph burning only 10 gallons of fuel per hour.

Harris Kayot sprinted into the sport boat market in 2003 with the largest expansion in their 45-year history. The Z-series establishes their entry into the fiberglass boat market and the Z201 establishes the center of this new offering.
A deck boat and pontoon boat company expanding into the fiberglass sport boat market doesn’t happen everyday, so I was intrigued by what little information I received prior to my arrival to Fremont, Indiana and my two days of testing. The one piece of information that bothered me the most was going into temperatures in the low forties when I am used to temperatures in the eighties and nineties! First stop, before dinner, was to a store for some warmer clothes!
Well, it was worth it. HarrisKayot did a fine job of developing the sport boat line with their notable attention to detail, comfort and functionality that fits the budget well. It was a pleasure to drive handling well with only a few distractions. She was a smooth ride and the power plant response was great.

Inside, she is just as impressive. All the seat bottoms are decay resistant composites. They are bioperf treated against mold and mildew common in the marine environment. There are eight-cup holders throughout the boat to handle the cold beverages. My test boat had the optional carpet that snaps in and out for easy care. The flooring is non-skid if you chose not to buy the optional carpet. Nidacore is the material under you feet, not marine-grade plywood, which delivers a quieter ride and lasts far longer.
You will have plenty of tunes from the stereo with plenty of options, including the Sony XM stereo my test boat had. This optional package included four Sony marine speakers and a remote control. Personally, I would either lose the remote or commit it to Davy’s locker in no time. Seems everything loose and not protected by something floatable on my boat takes a leap overboard.
The helm is accented with lifetime warranted Faria gauges and lifetime switches too. The instrument panel is accented with wood trim. The wheel is not your typical single point Teleflex, it is U-Flex with six points for much smoother handling. The companion and helm seats both slide and swivel for better view of guests. The glove box on the companion side is the largest I have seen on a Bowrider.
The folks on the line are proud of their work. They include a sticker on the helm that has the signatures of the person responsible for final assembly, final prep and the audit person. A simple thing that is impressive at the least.
The Z201 is 19’6” in length and 8’4” in width. She slipped up on the trailer with ease stopping on the skid plate that protects the fiberglass up front. She can hold up to nine people or 1250lbs. On the trailer, she weighs 3275lbs. Fuel capacity for the 201 is 44 gallons, and she has a deadrise of 20° with a wave slicing bow entry of 35°. With the outdrive up she can slip into 16” of water and with the outdrive down she fits in 32” of water. They offer several options for power plants and she is capable of handling up to 300hp.
During testing, I experienced some cavitation in tight turns and some glass-to-glass rattles. When I backed down quickly, I took on some water and the swim ladder cover popped open and stayed open until I closed it. She was a quiet ride otherwise. I managed a top speed of 47.1 mph from the Volvo 4.3 GXi power plant. At 4000rpms the 201 was running along at about 40mph burning only 10 gallons of fuel per hour. She was still only registering 87 dBa. At 3000rpms, she moved along at about 27 mph and sipped only 4.4 mpg giving you a range of 175 miles to the tank. She was on plane in four seconds and on up to 30 mph in just 8.5 seconds.
