Entry-level Excitement

If you’re looking for good, clean fun on the water, Rinker’s 192 Captiva Bowrider may be just the boat for you. This little pocket rocket will run with the best of them, scores high on the fun-o-meter and won’t break the bank while doing all of the above.

Our test boat was the 192 Bowrider with the Special Edition Package, Liberty Edition graphics and the optional power; the 4.3 liter, 190 HP Mercruiser Alpha, up from the 3.0 liter135 HP Mercruiser that is standard. The optional power is a necessity if you want to carry four adults and tow skiers or wakeboarders.

Like all the Rinker Boats, the 192 is overbuilt and a little heavy for its length, so there are no structural questions that arise from using the bigger engine. It does put a premium on paying attention to the trim of the boat at speed to gain optimum performance. And even though it is a bowrider, the bowriding should be left to the less than planing speeds.

Starting at the bow it is evident that Rinker takes great measures to create quality finished work, even on an entry level boat such as the 192. The carpeting is cut perfectly, easily removed for cleaning and snaps into place with minimal effort. The upholstery is finished well with no staples or nails showing on the back side of the cushions.

Starting in the bow, there is an anchor locker for a Danforth anchor and rode that is integrated into the seat coamings. When not in use the anchor locks down securely. The seats will accommodate four people cozily and have convienent hand rails and drink holders along with two stereo speakers.

There is a walk-through windshield that takes you to the main cockpit area. There are two captain’s chairs that swivel and move fore and aft for comfortable seating. They also have bolsters that pop up for higher seating. Unfortunately, when the bolster is up, the control lever under the seat protrudes and pokes you in the back of the calf. Caution is advised here.

The instrumentation and steering wheel are automobile-like and easy to use even though they are all analog. The wheel is adjustable and toggle switches control the accessories. A nice touch is that the horn toggle is bright red, making it easier to see.

In the aft section of the cockpit is a curved seat with storage space underneath and a cutout for a cooler that is very assessable. The CD changer is located in the storage area and it may be a problem hitting the changer when storing and removing gear.

In the cockpit sole, there is a locker for water skis and wet gear with a drain to the bilge. Opposite the steering wheel is a glove type storage box and the stereo/CD controls. Cupholders abound, along with two more stereo speakers and a built in garbage can with a lid. It is a very comfortable layout for a small boat.

Moving aft, the 192 has an interesting setup. On the starboard side of the engine deck is a small walkthrough to the swim platform, which is actually molded into the transom of the boat rather than added on. Both look small, but this a very good design and are most adequate on a boat this size. The swim platform has a boarding ladder molded in and there is a tow ring for skiers and wakeboarding.

The engine deck, which doubles as a sun deck (not while underway), opens easily and the engine compartment gives good access to the engine and there is ample storage. The entire area is well insulated.

This is certainly an entry level boat for Rinker and it has been done well. It has immense price-performance and young buyer appeal. No doubt Rinker believes if they do a great job with the first boat their customers buy, they will return to purchase larger boats from Rinker. The 192 Bowrider gives no reason to believe that this isn’t an excellent strategy.
