The Sea Ray 400 Sundancer is an express cruiser that is sporty, fast and has all the comforts of home. As a sport yacht the 400 is well equipped to handle two couples or a family for week-long cruises, and is a classic Sundancer design.
Key Features
One thing you’ll notice right away is the U-shaped lounge that can seat up to nine quests in the cockpit. It quickly converts into a sunpad, and there is a removable table for dining. A wet bar with sink and standard icemaker is for handy refills and reduces traffic down below. An electric assist hatch makes it easier to get to the engine and check the fluid levels before taking off.
The 400 has a double-wide benchseat next to the captain’s chair, and the burlwood dash is arranged in three tiers, with instruments close at hand. There is plenty of sleeping space on board, with a mid-cabin under the helm, a sofa in the salon which converts into a double berth and private owner’s stateroom. The forward head on the 400 is quite spacious with a Corian vanity, separate shower, and medicine cabinet with mirror above.
One thing we really like about the Sea Ray 400 Sundancer is the cockpit walkway. It’s one straight line from swim platform to the companionway door, and that makes it easy when you’re bringing a week’s worth of groceries aboard. But before you take off, you’ll want to check the fluid levels on the engines, and that’s easy to do with its electric assist hatch.
Standard power is a pair of MerCruiser’s new 7.4-liter Horizon gas engines, but our test boat has the optional 400-hp Cat diesels. This is also a V-drive transmission, which means there’s more room for sleeping quarters in the cabin.
Thanks to the V-drive transmissions, the draft is just 40 inches, which means you can sneak this big boat into places where others wouldn’t dare to go.
Our test boat with more than 800-hp, turned in a remarkable performance. The boat hit a top speed of 38.35 mph, and she got up on plane in less than eight seconds. She cut tight corners at speed, and we were impressed with how quiet she ran, even with the big diesels churning away.
So how do you choose one express cruiser over another? It looks to us like the answer is in the details, and the 400 DA is a great example of that.
