Mission of the Bavaria Sport 35
Not surprisingly Bavaria's Sport 35 is very much oriented to northern latitudes. That is why she has high freeboard which insures a dry cockpit. She is also family-oriented which makes her an ideal boat to take on the rivers and canals in Europe in addition to offshore cruising.
Bavaria is marketing this boat as a good cruiser for the whole family and ideal for children -- just keep them from hanging over the bow when underway.
High Freeboard. This is Bavaria's signature design, the visual aspect that sets the brand apart from others.
Standard Radar Arch. The Sport 35's arch is fiberglass, yet thin and is attractively designed, in our opinion.
Large Mid Cabin for Class. We think Bavaria has done a good job of building a relatively large mid cabin with twin berths and a love seat behind a bulkhead, standing headroom and the entry, and a privacy door.
Inspected by Germanischer Lloyd. Bavaria is as concerned as any builder we know about the sea-keeping aspects of its boats. In that regard the factory is "regularly inspected" by Germanischer Lloyd, according to the company.
This is more like it. The teak swim platform extends past the running gear which makes this a great place for kids to slide in the water. The platform is also high enough that it will not drag in turns or when getting on plane.
The Sport 35's LOA is 35'5" (10.80 m) and she has a hull length of 33'8" (10.28 m). Her beam is 11'9" (3.59 m) and she displaces 13,200 lbs. (6,200 kgs.). Because she will be used on Europe's canals and rivers both her underwater draft and air draft are important. With her sterndrive lower units up, she draws just 27.5" (.70 m), and 3'9" with gear down. Her air draft is 10'6" which means she can get under most of the bridges on the popular European waterways.
In addition to the radar arch already noted, the Sport 35 comes with a teak swim platform, hot and cold shower at the stern and a hardwood cockpit table. Other standard equipment includes a fully equipped European galley, all the deck hardware needed and six opening hatches in the deck.
The accommodations layout of the Bavaria Sport 35.
Main deck layout of the Bavaria Sport 35.
Bavaria knows that boaters will use the Sport 35 in different ways so it does not presume to add a lot of amenities that may not be needed or ever be used. Not loading the boat up with gear also keeps the base price down. But amenities are on the option list, most anything can be found there used on boats in this class. The builder has also clumped many of them into different packages, like the car companies, so it makes selecting them easier and may even save some money.
For example, 7,000 BTUs of A/C is on the option list, along with teak in the cockpit and on the side decks, a bow thruster, a grill and fridge for the cockpit wet bar and cruising canvas that takes advantage of the radar arch and buttons up the Sport 35 for three-season boating.
There is even a hardtop version of the Sport 35.
Looking aft in the salon. Note the cabinets, portlight and shelves above the galley counter -- all of which was made possible by the high freeboard. The door to the left of the companionway is to the wet head. Door at right is to the mid cabin.
Looking forward in the main salon. The open door leads to the forward cabin.
The high freeboard also pays off below in a number of ways. First, it provides more storage space and headroom under the side decks. This in turn opens up the whole boat making her seem large below, which in fact she is.
The salon-galley area is pretty much the same layout as most other boats. Perhaps a difference is the extensive use of wood -- on the cabin sole, cabinets and bulkheads. This warms up the interior. Also noteworthy is the fact that the Sport 35 has six opening hatches to cool things down below at night.
A wide-angle lens view of the mid cabin. The love seat is to the right. Note the overhead which has full-standing headroom at the entrance to the cabin and over the foot of the aft berth. The portlight opens. This kind of headroom and layout is unusual in a 35' boat.
Another wide-angle view of the mid cabin. This time there is a filler cushion in place to make one, large bed. The door in the background leads to salon.
Mid Cabin. The high freeboard, plus the fact that Bavaria has no port side bench seat (just a high sun pad), means the designers can have plenty of headroom in the walk-in area of the mid cabin. Remember that this is a boat with a 33' 8' (10.28 m) hull. Typically in this size express cruiser, access to the mid cabin is on hands and knees, or at best a deep crouch.
We like the fact that Bavaria has installed twin beds here with an aisle between. To port there is a love seat that is good to sit on when getting dressed. The two hanging lockers are also large for a 35-footer in the secondary cabin.
The berth in the forward cabin with the filler cushion in place to make one large bed.
With the filler cushion out, the deck space in the forward cabin is opened up.
Forward Cabin. The controlling headroom below is 6'2-3/4" (1.90 m) which is also unusual in many 35' boats. There is not a lot of room in the forward cabin with the filler cushion in, but once it is out the cabin opens up. The bulkhead and door provide privacy and the space between the beds provides standing space needed to make the cabin comfortable.
The Sport 35 comes standard powered by twin Mercury 5.0L MPI DTS 260-hp gas engines and Bravo III drives. 5.7 L gas engines of 320-hp are available from either Mercury or Volvo Penta. A range of diesel engines is available from Volvo Penta beginning with a single 370-hp diesel going up to twin 300-hp D4s.
Joystick control is available for all twin engine installations from both engine makers.
We like the asymmetrical stern treatment that maximizes seating in the cockpit. We caution boaters not to let guests sit on the stern seat when underway.
The Bavaria Sport 35 is robustly built by a company that takes pride in its bullet-proof construction. While this is a boat obviously built to be sea-worthy and dry in the northern latitudes, there is nothing wrong with those attributes in the tropics either. Just add the A/C option and a Bimini over the cockpit.
We like the fact that the Sport 35 is a sterndrive and not an inboard. This arrangement is what is mostly responsible for the comfortable mid cabin and sterndrives are also faster and more efficient at cruising speeds.
This is a large, relatively beamy 35-footer that should be suitable in many parts of the world serious cruising.
