1 x 150-hp Yamaha
1 x 175-hp Yamaha
by Capt. Dan Armitage---
Skeeter’s new 19-footer for bass anglers is designed for maximum performance when powered by Yamaha’s 150-hp and 175-hp outboards.
The Skeeter TZX190 is not just another bass boat, nor is it just another bass boat angling for you business with price alone. Rather, Skeeter offers a complex matrix of construction, hull design and outboard rigging that is different than what other buildrs in class offer. For example, it is the only fiberglass bass boat builder I can think of that uses aluminum in three critical ways.
What you get is more than what you see at the transom of the new Skeeter bass boat.
Torque Transfer System
Equipped with the company’s "Torque Transfer System," the new TZX models have a method of construction that makes life easier on the boat's transom and outboard fasteners and thereby provides an extra measure of safety. That is important on a boat that is going nearly 70 mph.
Instead of the outboard motor being attached to the transom in the traditional manner, it is actually secured to an aircraft-grade aluminum knee brace integrated into the transom and connected to the boat’s EX-Cel composit stringer system. In this way the torque stress and vibration created by the engine is distributed to the whole hull of the boat rather than in just one localized area on the transom.
This bird's eye view of the deck will give a pretty good idea of what your getting in the TZX190.
Check out the simple, easy-open lids over the rear livewells. Who wants to fumble with a twist and pull latch with a winning catch in hand?
Both livewells aboard the 190 are located beneath the aft deck. That means the forward angler has to scramble back and forth -- perhaps counting on the courtesy of his “stern” partner -- to allow access to his designated well. I’m thinking the integrated ice chest located under the forward deck might be better suited as a second livewell.
Each 13-gallon livewell is fitted with an independent fill and recirculating/drain mode, timers and controls, located on the steering console.
The port-side rod locker is plenty big, but lack racks for organizing and securing rods and reels.
The lids on all the TXZ’s lockers and livewells are reinforced and oversized, so they more than cover the areas they are intended to protect. Most are supported with gas-assisted shocks and all but the livewell covers are lockable. All the boat’s storage locker interiors are lined with marine carpeting.
Aluminum Deck Grid System
There is an aluminum grid structure that provides enhanced support and strength to the deck. This construction method helps eliminate deck deflection and thereby permits lids to close tightly and lock securely as they were intended. There are also insulated aluminum doors on the boat. Skeeter is the only bass boat builder that I know of that uses aluminum in these important ways.
Passengers aboard the Skeeter receive a welcome hand amidships.
There is handhold built into the passenger seat bulkhead, fitted to a retractable strap that keeps it out of the way unless needed. This offers a handy grip in a non-traditional location, something that is encouraged by ABYC standards. With an estimated top end of 67 mph when matched with a Yamaha 175-hp HPDI outboard, passengers may feel inclined to use it.
The 190’s helm console comes complete with full instrumentation and a handy open-face storage box for keeping small items such as sunglasses, wallets and cell phones semi-secure yet accessible.
The TZX190 comes standard with a Humminbird Model 728 combination fish finder/GPS flush-mounted into the driver’s console, which is wired for an external GPS antenna. Several Humminbird and Lowrance flush-mounted units are offered as options. The boat’s electrical accessories are controlled by rocker switches with circuit breakers. A passenger console is an option available on the 190.
The 190 comes with a Minn Kota 70 Edge model bow-mounted trolling motor standard.
Bass anglers who spend much of their time standing on the bow will appreciate creature comforts such as a recessed well for the bow-mounted trolling motor’s foot control and a skid free-surface on the starboard nose for traction when standing far forward. The forward dash area includes a panel pre-wired and ready for an optional flush-mounted fish-finder.
As with other Skeeter fishing boat packages, the TZX190 comes fully rigged and ready to go with full electronics, a bow-mount motor and custom trailer.
Even the trailer, which is constructed using sturdy C-channel protected with a Tuff Coat finish, is of above average quality, and comes standard with disc brakes, spare tire and a swing away tongue, items that are expensive ad-ons in many boat packages in this class and price range.
Skeeter spokesman Paul Rossi describes the TZX190 as “a little boat that thinks it’s big.” Rossi was referring to the amenities found on the price-point rig, many of which are more often associated with larger, premium priced bass boats. At nearly 19 feet however, the largest TZX of the three-model line is a big boat in many bass anglers’ circles. Combine that with the standard gear, the above average trailer, and Skeeter's reputation and you have a compelling boat for your shopping short list.
One more thing. As most people know, Skeeter is owned by Yamaha Motor Company. Here you have one company that has made both the boat and the engine, so if there is a problem anywhere along the line there is no finger pointing if there is a problem.
