Four Winns V358 Captain's Report

Four Winns V358 Captain's Report

By Capt. Rob Smith

Starting at the bow

The bow is protected by welded one-piece stainless steel rails. At the stem is a windlass with foot controls, rope, chain and anchor. The optional windlass stays protected under a hatch keeping the topside looking smooth and clean. Three large, tinted deck hatches allow lots of light and fresh air below. Skid resistant surfaces cover the bow area making it safer to move about and a molded toe rail help keep your feet on deck when moving near the sheer. A large walk-through windshield and three molded-in steps get you safely to and from the bow.

Now this is a bunny pad. We’ve never seen a bow sun pad as plush and as thick as this. (Of course a princess could feel a pea.) Note handholds on the raised deck; these are terrific and rarely seen where there are also lifelines. The Bowmar hatches are top-of-the-line.

Four-Winns-V358-Helm

Look at those large, plush helm and companion seats. They are individually adjustable, not that this couple would want to do that.

Helm Features

The dash of this helm has room for just one integrated screen with multi-function displays just as you find in commercial aircraft. It is actually a safety feature because you only have one screen to distract your eye at any one time. Simply switch to the sensor you want. For now, you can opt for the Navigation 2 package that includes an autopilot, VHF radio, GPS plotter, digital depth finder and radar unit.

Faria Fog-free gauges, dual engine electronic binnacle controls, hour meters, compass and a stainless steel wood grain tilt wheel make up the first rate helm pod. Four Winns is keeping it as simple as possible.

Seating includes a double-wide helm seat with bolster with a port side lounger large enough for three to join you up front. The driver’s side of the helm has an electric adjustable slide for comfort.

The aft section of the cockpit has a U-shaped bench with filler cushion to create an expansive sun tanning space or a table to enjoy a meal topside. Every possible space below the seating is used to create additional storage for gear topside.

Four-Winns-V358-Seating

A wet bar, seating for 10, al fresco dining, sunbathing, and a watersports platform – why get a bigger boat when this one has virtually everything?

A handy refreshment center is just abaft the helm and will be the center of activity when the boat is at anchor. It is complete with a sink, countertop preparation area, icemaker or refrigerator and outlets for a TV and power to spin up frozen shakes in the blender.

Four-Winns-V358

Remember this is a 35’ boat: pull-out sofa to port, galley to starboard, and the master in the bow with privacy curtain.

Below Deck

Going below, entering the cabin, you feel you are aboard a much larger vessel. Four Winns’ designers turn the steps on entry rather than have them stretch out deep into the cabin. This opens up the cabin sole and only takes a couple times entering to get used to. A large couch fills the port side of the salon. Wood blinds continue the wood cabinetry and really give a rich look to the cabin.

Cabin Details

The power distribution panel is to the left of the sofa with control heads for the CD and DVD changers below. Overhead, the builder has installed a cherry soffit inset into the overhead with recessed rope lighting. This is both practical and ornamental. Often, with time fabric overhead material tends to sag after a little age, so this should keep it looking both elegant and functional for many years. All the hatches have three position screen systems. You can either slide a panel over to block out light and air, a screen to allow light and air or completely open to be able to allow maximum light and air into the cabin.

Four-Winns-V358-Cabin

This clever table has folding up ends so that it can be easily stowed away.

Four-Winns-V358-Cabin

Fold out sofa makes into a snug double. This boat sleeps six.

The Galley

The starboard side galley has plenty of storage for a weekend away. The upper section has a coffeemaker and a pivoting flat panel TV viewable from the mid-cabin or the V-berth. The countertop space and a large sink make food preparation easy. Below the counters is a refrigerator/freezer, tip-out waste bin and more storage.

Four-Winns-V358

We’re beginning to think this interior was designed by a woman. These pull out shelves, which are the rage in new house kitchens are ideal for boats because outboard space is impossible to reach – unless you have one of these pull-out shelves! Note grab rail by the stove top. A rarity.

Four-Winns-V358-Overhead

Overhead soffits on a 35-footer? Unheard of! Four Winns has out done itself! Yes, those are rope lights up there, and they are exactly like the ones used on megayachts. How cool and romantic is this?

Four-Winns-V358-bed

We’ve been on $4 million yachts that don’t do as good a job as Four Winns has done in this bow cabin of providing precious storage space. Look at the cabinet doors on either side of the head rest. Note the large doors for storage space above the portlights. Eureka! Note the reading lights over the pillows! And there is not one, but two hanging lockers. Note more accessible storage under the bunk and port and starboard under the hanging lockers. No space has gone unused. Well done!

Accommodations

Forward is a large V-berth with storage cabinets which includes two cedar-lined closets and a dedicated space below the cushion for the table. I found the gas shocks a little weak, making it a two person job to hold the bed up and insert the table into place.

Four-Winns-V358-Sofa

The mid-cabin: Four Winns calls this their dinette and we agree that this is a superb use of this space. You can comfortably seat four adults here. Turn off those bright reading lights and place a couple of flickering votive candles on the table and you’ll be in a cozy, romantic setting as fun as any on the Riveria. After a night cap this space turns into a large bed.

The mid-cabin has a privacy curtain to separate it from the rest of the boat at night. Lighting and a portal make it well lit and the seating converts into a large berth at night. This cabin has storage above on both ends as well as a cedar-lined closet at the entry.

Four-Winns-V358-vacuum

Okay, now we know this interior was designed by a woman. One who likes to have things stowed neatly away and the whole place vacuumed clean. A central vac is the only way to do it and the V358 has it.

Four-Winns-V358-Battery-Switch

It’s not sexy but we like it because it is so practical and Four Winns was one of the first builders to do it – placing the battery switches right by the transom door so they are the first thing you see when you step aboard, and the last thing when you leave.

Engine Options

Below the cockpit floor is the engine room. An electric motor lifts up the hatch at the touch of a switch. Once open, you can easily get down in the engine room for regular checking of the fluids and maintenance. Three inboard and six sterndrive options are available for this design. The boat I tested was powered by twin 375-hp Crusader 6.0 L MPI gas inboard engines.

Four-Winns-V358-Drink-Tea

She’s drinking iced tea but we’d perch here for sundown cocktails each evening, and be watching for the green flash.

Swim Platform

Stepping on through the transom walk-through, our test boat had the optional flex teak flooring on the swim platform. Corners are rounded on the stern which makes it difficult for most to board. The addition of a grab handle would make it safer and easier to get on board.

The boat has a scissor-type deep-reach swim ladder with four steps which makes it much easier to bring yourself on board from the water. This is as good ad you will see on any boat.

Power cords snake up and enter a hatch on the stern that keep them dry and organized. A large trunk locker has room for some fenders and lines.

Four-Winns-V358-Joystick

You are looking at a $23,846 option for either an Axius (MerCruiser) or Volvo Penta VEC Joystick.

Specs and Performance

The V358 37’0” length on average with a beam width of 12’0”. She requires a draft of 40” of water on average and carries a fuel load of 230 gallons. Dry weight on this yacht is between 14,500 lbs and 16,500 lbs. with engines. We tested the 348 with two people on board on the inland lake and found it was quick to plane in just 7.5 seconds and could be up to 30 mph in just 11.3 secs. The most economical cruise speed was at 3500 rpm traveling 25.8 mph which delivered a range of 229 miles on a full tank of fuel. The ride and handling was impressive through out the range.

Four-Winns-V358-Cruise

If you haven’t seen Capt. Rob’s video test of the V358 then you are in for a treat and he shows you more than we ever could with just a few pictures and words.
