The American Tug 435 (formerly called the 41) is a capable coastal cruiser with a LOA of 43.7’. Her 4'10'' draft will keep her more to the outside of the coasts rather than the ICW or great circle routes.
American Tug is owned by parent company Tomco Marine Group Inc. It’s a company that manufactures coastal cruisers. The three principals are all long time industry specialists that came together when they were all at another company that builds coastal cruisers... the very successful and popular Nordic Tug. Now they’ve ventured on their own and so far have four boats in the company portfolio ranging in length from 36’ to 53’. As you will see, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Today, we’ll take a look at the 435, Tomco’s second to come off the drafting table, and see what makes this such a capable cruiser.

Home on the Range
When you start to look at coastal cruising, one of the first “make or break” features is the boat's range. Just making it to the next marina on the chart won’t cut it because it may be out of fuel or out of business. In this case, the 435 has definitely got the reach for the job. Like any other displacement cruiser, range is directly related to speed. You won’t find a “best cruise” in the strict sense of the term. Rather, the slower you go, the farther you go. Simple as that.
Now while we haven’t tested this boat to verify the numbers, Tomco tells us that with the popular Volvo Penta D9 (500 hp version) they’ve come up with very respectable numbers, and even a casual glance at those numbers seems to bear that out.

Using the standard formula for determining the best hull speed of a displacement boat, the American Tug 435 would seem to cruise at her peak at 8.33kts. 1400 rpm puts her right about at that sweet spot giving her a range of 821nm. Pick any home port and draw a circle 800 miles around it and you’ve got serious cruising at your disposal.
Of course, at 8+ KTS you’re not going to be breaking any speed records, but coastal cruising isn’t about getting anywhere in a hurry. However, often enough, cruisers do want to scoot to the next cruising grounds in a little bit of a hurry and American Tug knows this. The 435’s top speed is 16.5 KTS and the only way to achieve that is to add horsepower. That’s why the 435 is powered with 500 hp instead of a displacement boats typical135 – 190 hp. The tradeoff is that you’ll burn a lot more fuel, but you do have options now.
So if we’re going to be spending extended time onboard, then it’s got to be livable, right? Again, the 435 delivers. She sleeps four in two staterooms, and that makes for a family on an extended summer trip or two couples enjoying retirement on the end of the anchor rode.
The American Tug 435 layout is in the standard raised pilothouse with living space aft and cabins forward of the center helm.
With two cabins and two full ensuite heads, this is a boat that can keep four people comfortable without having to give up privacy when needed. The sleeping accommodations are accessed via a stairway at the starboard side of the pilothouse, and the staterooms are well separated from one another for keeping friends from getting in each other’s space.
Note the in-deck storage and overhead vents. Opening portlights allow fresh air in as well as natural light.
The master lies amidships and is full beam with the head. As we’re talking a 15’10" beam, that’s plenty of room for the center mounted queen sized berth. Getting around is further facilitated by the tapered corners of the berth. There’s no lacking for storage in the master with two nightstand on each side of the berth, three additional drawers with mirror above, and a full length cedar lined hanging locker.
This boat lends itself more to having a couple cruising full time and picking up the occasional guests along the way. Reason being is that the guest quarters are comfortable, but not full sized enough to live aboard for months at a time. This is probably a good thing because as the saying goes, fish and friends start to stink after awhile, so having your company get too comfortable can be a bad thing.
Guests also enjoy ample storage and opening portlights as well as an overhead hatch.
On the 435, though, your guests certainly won’t be uncomfortable. The side berth is actually an inch larger than the master in both length and width, but more dramatically tapered at one end. Four drawers and a hanging locker make up the storage, and the washer and dryer are also residing here.
The 435 has two ensuite heads, both with Masterflush fresh water 12v toilets, built-in shower stalls with seat and sapele and maple sole. For ventilation, there are stainless steel ports with screens in each head.
Stepping up to the nerve center of the yacht, the raised pilothouse has near 360-degree visibility. There is a large console for custom electronics installation, plus an overhead console. As this is always the main gathering spot while underway, in addition to the center mounted helm seat, there’s an Ultraleather covered settee behind the helm with table. We love that American Tug didn’t forget that paper charts are the staple of the prepared mariner, and chart storage is beneath the pilothouse settee. Cruisers also like to keep logs and records of the trip in addition to ships maintenance, and that requires writing room. Here we have a starboard side desk with drawers. Handholds are everywhere you need to walk or stand and there are six opening windows with screens.
There are doors to both sides of the pilothouse and plenty of opening windows. Notice the icemaker under the settee. There’s also plenty of counter space for navigating.
Looking aft from the pilothouse shows great visibility when backing and easy access to the salon and galley.
Salon and Galley
Nights at the transient dock or at anchor will be a pleasure in this tastefully appointed salon. The settee and hard wood table provide ample seating and an entertainment center forward.
It’s hard not to notice the stunning view to the upper helm and the huge windows. The galley is small but not cramped.
If you choose to save money by not continually eating out, then the galley will be appreciated with its amenities including a propane stove/oven (if equipped with hydronic heating system) OR a 110v electric stove/oven (for air conditioned boats), an upright NovaKool Refrigerator/Freezer (freezer on bottom, 9.1 cu.ft.), and a Sharp microwave oven above the refrigerator. The stove has a ventilation system to remove cooking odors, the counters are Granicoat, the same sapele and maple sole from the forward spaces is repeated here.
The flying bridge is an option, and one to seriously consider. It features access from pilothouse that requires slight modifications to the cabinetry below. The stainless radar mast is hinged for reduced bridge clearance and it includes a KVH mount, radar mount, four antennae and light mounts.
American Tug spec’d the 435 out nicely for worry free cruising. She has an equipment list that rivals much larger yachts, and that serves to make her a functional boat in addition to being comfortable. West Coast cruisers have a preference for heating with a Hydronic diesel furnace and therefore a 6kw Northern Lights genset will suffice. East Coast boaters crave air conditioning, so in addition to a Marine Air 4-unit 44,000 BTU air conditioning/heat system with a 1000w 110v electric heater in salon and 750w 110v electrical heater in master stateroom and forward heads (silent running) a 9kw genset is available.
Maintenance is a breeze with the Reverso Oil changing system for main, gear and genset and both the single Racor filter for genset and dual Racor filters for main engine are within easy reach. Quiet running is achieved via the underwater exhaust and there is heavy duty sound deadening throughout engine room.
Whether cruising the Pacific Northwest, or the East Coast and the Bahamas, or even heading north to the coasts of Canada and Newfoundland, the American Tug 435 has the drive and comfort level to see you through. Her good looks and stately appearance are just the tip of the iceberg to what this cruiser has to offer. Price with a Volvo Penta D9 diesel engine is $629,000.
