Cobalt 232 (2006-) Captain's Report

By Capt. Bob Smith

Cobalt brings new products to the market every year now, and this year is no different.

The 232 has a smart stainless scuff plate that protects the bow from the typical bumps and bangs that you see on the trailers and the docks. Our test boat had the optional docking lights which prove to be very handy when you’re approaching the trailer in the dark after a long day on the water. The anchor locker is large enough for a good sized anchor and plenty of line.

Plenty of Seating Aboard

The bow seating is awesome with double stitched material, and well-padded cushions for greater comfort and longer life. Lift the bottom cushions and you have tremendous storage for gear and other items. The lounger backs swing into the bow to reveal monstrous storage inside them. Your life vests can be neatly organized on hangers and still have room for bumpers on the floor below them. Add optional filler cushions that are simple to install in the bow, and you have a large lounging area for catching some rays.

A panel in the walkthrough allows you to block the chilly air that passes below the windshield. The windshield has Cobalt’s unique latching mechanism that keeps the flip-over locked securely in place. The windshield itself allows even more space in the cockpit. In fact, you get a full 84 inches of space from side wall to side wall in the cockpit. In-floor storage is cavernous and perfect for storing skis.

Smart Looking Helm

The helm features very comfortable seats and has a good clear view over the dash. The companion seat can be upgraded to have vertical adjustments and lumbar supports.

Some of the interesting options offered on this model are LED lights under the lip of the stern that light up the swim platform, a wakeboard tower, Perfect Pass, Trim Tabs, GPS and super sound system with XM Satellite stereo.

Stern Features

Moving back the rear of the boat features a wraparound lounge on the port side with a small bench across from it separated by the walkthrough. The rear seat section has a flip-flop backrest that becomes a headrest for the stern sun pad. This seat is also part of the engine hatch which means you gain even more space in the cockpit. Lifting the hatch, you can see the healthy gasket Cobalt uses to seal the engine from the weather, and you from the noise of the running engine. Generous space around the engine will make pre-launch checks easy, and will allow your mechanic to get any job done faster when they do service work. Over on the port side is a large storage area which is exposed to the heat of the engine; this way any wet gear you’ve got aboard can dry off quickly.

Extended Swim Platform

Stepping up on the walkthrough, you can access two hatches under the sun pad. The first is a large storage compartment, and the second storage box has the swim shower and water controls in it. The extended swim platform is plenty large for play, and allows you to easily put your skis on. Access to the large port side storage for skis is through a trunk hatch. Our boat had a ski pylon stored in this box, which slips into a center hole to give you a professional ski tow pylon.

Performance

After running the film, we ran the boat on a freshwater lake in the rain. Remember, when you are looking at the numbers, these were taken at an elevation of 2000 feet. We tested the 5.7L Gi from Volvo and the Volvo 8.1 GXi on the 232 model, and found the 8.1 GXi could get the boat up on plane in a mere 3.9 seconds and up to 30 miles-per-hour in only 6.6 seconds. We found her cruise speed to be around 32.8 miles-per-hour at 3000 rpm. At cruise she is capable of delivering a range of about 137 miles on a full tank of fuel. When I pushed her to top end turning 4900 rpm the boat achieved a thrilling 56.5 miles-per-hour.

Specifications

The all-new 232 measures 23’11” length overall, and when you add the extended swim platform, the overall length is 25’11”. She has a beam width of 8’6” and dry weight of 4600 pounds. The fuel capacity on this model is 50 gallons and the water capacity is 10 gallons. With the outdrive up this boat can slip into water as shallow as 21 inches, and with it down you’ll need 37 inches of water below the hull.

The 232 from Cobalt brings a great new option for boaters to enter into the elegant Cobalt family, or simply to move up to a larger version as your family grows. The 232 maximizes the storage capability aboard, maximizes the seating and the cockpit space to give you an even bigger feeling boat.
