Regulator is well known in the offshore fishing circuit as a solid performing boat with outstanding fit and finish. Designed by renowned naval architect Lou Codega, the 32 FS will have little problem meeting the rough demands of both the pro and casual offshore fisherman. Our tests show a best cruise speed of 25.4 kts and a range of 373 nm.

Regulator 32 FS (2011-) Captain's Report

Captain's Report by Capt. Steve

Regulator 32 FS

With a LOA of 32' (9.8 m) and a beam of 10'5" (3.2 m), the Regulator 32 FS will have no problem living up to its reputation for offshore performance.

The 32 is Regulator Marine’s second largest model in their line of offshore-capable fishing rigs. Regulator tells us that the FS or “Forward Seating” version adds family-friendly seating to the front of the boat, without taking away any of the fishing features of this North Carolina built boat. While seats are not new, and nice to have, to our eye, this is still a purpose-built fishing machine.

Bow Features

Starting at the front of the boat, the wide gunwales join to form a handy high casting deck in calm water, or a wider foot rest when working a fish. Pop-up cleats and a bow light that retracts into the deck keep the area free of obstacles to trip on or snag a line. A locker in the bow handles the anchor and line, but I'd like to see Regulator engineer an access for the anchor rode to feed from this locker with the lid closed.

The forward seating consists of two large facing bench seats with comfortable cushions for seat bottoms, and coaming pads extend forward for the seat backs. Beneath each of the seats are large 52.5 gallon (199 L) capacity storage boxes that double as insulated fish boxes. Obviously a table can be installed here to create a comfortable place for lunch when at anchor. Women will love it.

Regulator 32 FS

Notice how all the fittings lie flush in the caprail so you have a higher casting deck. Insulated storage is under the seats and a macerated box is in the deck.

Fishing Amenities

In the sole is a huge 161 gallon (610 L) insulated box for the majority of your catch. This fish box is outfitted with a pump out and macerator and none of the contents drain into the bilge, so your boat will not smell like last month’s catch. When not used for fish, this box doubles as a rod organizer. Every lid on this boat is strong and durable, made by resin transfer molding. All compartments have locking latches and stainless steel gas-assist struts.

Regulator 32 FS

This macerated fishbox at the bow doubles as rod storage. Additional rod storage is in the deck to both sides of the console.

In front of the center console is another comfortable bench seat with a flip-up bottom that reveals a 74 qt (70 L) insulated cooler. The deck to both sides of the console houses in-deck rod storage lockers which are lighted and lockable.

Helm and T-Top

Everything on the helm falls right where you would need it. The old, standard Yamaha gauges used to be clustered on the top right corner of the panel. Now, four digital multi-function displays lie across the bottom and that really opens up the real estate for two large multi-function nav displays, and there's easy access from the head for installation and service. The controls for the stainless 14x22 Lenco trim tab are to the left of the wheel, and I was happy to see indicator lights to either side. Teleflex Seastar hydraulic tilt steering with power assist is now standard and it sure made driving this boat easy.

Regulator 32 FS

With this much open area for nav panels, offshore runs will be a pleasure. I'd like to see Regulator mount the compass centered in front of the helm, rather than in the center of the console. Note the convenient glove box to starboard. The grab rails are powder-coated.

Regulator 32 FS

These seats are part of the optional deluxe leaning post. They wrap-around to keep you secure for sustained high-speed operation. Notice the flip-down footrest. I'd like to see two so one person can stand while one can sit.

The fiberglass T-top has an electronics box with a flush mounted electronics panel, LED lighting, and built-in outrigger bases for either the 16' or 18’ Lee Sidewinder outriggers. I like how the spreader lights are molded into the hard top.

Regulator 32 FS

Note how the T-top electronics box has a flush mount panel.

The Head

The head has over 6' (1.8 m) of headroom inside. There is easy access to the battery switches, which are located just inside the door which is lockable. Access panels to the backs of the electronics and to the batteries are also inside. A sink, storage drawers and an electric head make up the amenities inside.

Regulator 32 FS

The sink is plumbed into the 35 gallon water tank, and with an optional pull-out sprayer you can shower. Notice the sump in the deck.

Leaning Post

The leaning post tackle center is optional and features seat back rocket launchers, a covered sink and baitwell. Down below, Plano tackle storage bins are at both sides and built-in drawers in the center. Tool holders are just above.

In the cockpit deck abaft the helm is access to the bilge and all the pumps for the macerators, livewells, and bilges. At the transom, is an optional fold-away rumble seat and on top is a 50 gallon (189.27 L) livewell with the bait calming blue gelcoat; and a 32.5 gallon (123 L) fishbox. To starboard is a transom door for hauling in any catch that's too big to make it over the rail.

Regulator 32 FS

Here you can see the optional rumble seat in the stowed position. Note the hawse-holes to keep the caprails clear of anything that may snag a line. The hatch covers are back gelled and supported with gas struts. The padded bolsters run 360-degrees.

Regulator 32 FS

While this is a well equipped rigging station, I'd like to see a flip-out footrest so I can sit on top and watch the lines when trolling.

Specifications

This model measures 32' (9.8 m) length overall with a stable 10'5" (3.2 m) beam. She has a dry weight 9,801 lbs (4,446 kg) with engines and carries 310 gallons (1,174 L) of fuel so you can run well offshore to chase the big fish. She has a maximum rated engine horsepower of 600 with twin outboards. Her wide Carolina bow flare and 24 degrees of deadrise deliver a wave-slicing smooth, dry ride and with the outboards trimmed all the way up she draws 24” and 32’’with them down.

The 32 FS delivered a solid performance and has top-notch fishability, fit and overall finish. But having been in several different Regulator models, I've come to expect nothing less, and I wasn't disappointed.
