Premier 210 SunSation with Suzuki 60hp

Pontoon boats seem to be evolving quickly, far beyond their traditional image. Premier knows this well- they’ve been in the business of building nothing but pontoon boats since 1992. Their lineup ranges from simple, no frills double “toon” boats to high-end triples. Just below Premier’s luxury models, you’ll find their touring boats. The SunSation lineup, ranging from 15 to 24 feet includes the 210 SunSation. This boat offers your family the perfect platform for creating lasting memories out on the lake. Launch your 210 SunSation and you’ll launch your adventures, whether they include sightseeing, watching the fireworks, or enjoying watersports.

Built to Last

Details like solid aluminum keels and multi-chamber tubes maintain the boat’s strength and integrity. Transoms are reinforced to prevent racking, and they heat-shrink all of the electrical connections to keep them dry. If you’re serious about pleasing your customers, those are the things you need to do. The 210 SunSation features 16” crossmember spacing and 25” tubes.

Another item that distinguishes Premier from the competition is in the seating. First, the individual units are rotocast, which means that they’re wood-free in construction. You’ll find an increasing number of mid-priced pontoon boats to be built this way. However, the hinges are what make this product unique. They’re a welded aluminum device which functions better than anything I’ve seen so far. The seat top lifts and then tilts down, out of the way, so it stays open while you stow or retrieve your gear. Gone are the days of little jury-rigged hooks and lanyards that you find around so many boats. Stainless steel cleats, polished corner castings and flush-mounted docking lights are useful and attractive details which not only look good, but they’re functional and they add value. And the list of standard features doesn’t stop there. Things like courtesy lights, a 9 foot bimini top and Marine Grade Hi-lo 26 ounce carpet add to both comfort and value. Premier’s 210 SunSation is 20’ on deck and 20’4” overall. She’s 8’6” wide and carries 12 people for a capacity of 2,340 pounds. Tube diameter is 25 inches, and the two-tube model we tested can safely handle an outboard of up to 100 horsepower.

The Layout

There are two distinct seating areas on this boat, separated by a gate on the port side. The forward seating area features symmetrical matching curved loungers, port and starboard. Storage underneath all the seating units adds up to quite a bit. The fiberglass console is to starboard, and it also includes access underneath for storage. Standard controls and instrumentation include a speedo, tachometer, voltage indicator, horn, and a trim gauge. Navigation lights, horn, and other accessories are operated by a functional switch panel. The steering wheel tilts for comfort, and a bucket helm chair will make sure the skipper is comfortable all day. If you’d like to bring some music along, go right ahead. A Sony marine-grade CD stereo is part of the standard package.

Just aft and opposite the steering console is an L-shaped settee. Like the forward seats, it offers plenty of storage underneath. A removable table is situated so that a handful of your guests can sit around it, on the aft settee. Back on the starboard side of the stern, you’ll find a gate leading to a permanent swim ladder.

Test Power- Suzuki’s four-stroke DF60-hp

For our test, the 210 was set-up with a 60 horsepower Suzuki outboard. An inline four-cylinder four-stroke engine, Suzuki’s DF60 boasts a tuned, temperature controlled intake system, solid-state ignition and idle air control. Featuring the lowest gear ratio in its class, the DF60 uses sequential multi-port fuel injection to squeeze every bit of efficiency out of every drop of fuel. A one-piece forged crankshaft and stainless steel pump housing mean dependability, and this motor is clean-it’s got a 3-star ultra-low CARB emission rating.

The Suzuki DF60 put us up on plane in 3.8 seconds and we reached 20 miles an hour in 8.9 seconds. Our top speed was 20.1 mph at 5500 rpm. Our best fuel economy was indicated to be at 3500 rpm where we calculated a consumption rate of 1.7 gph at 10.7 mph, resulting in 6.42 miles per gallon. The Suzuki 60 test motor ran like a little titan. It did well with a couple of us around the lake, but you’d probably want to think about a larger motor if you plan on boating with a crowd.

If you’re in the market for a pontoon boat in this size range, you’ve got a lot to choose from. It’s important to keep an eye out on the little features- that’s what really distinguishes one boat from another. If you take a close look at the 210 SunSation from Premier, or any one of the boats in their line-up, you’re going to see a lot of little features which set these boats apart.
