Sea Ray 185 Outboard Sport (2005-) Captain's Report
Tested By Capt. Ron Svoboda
Last years introduction of the 185 Sport was such a hit that Sea Ray is introducing an outboard powered version in 2005. This boat is available in two configurations: the standard lay-out and the fish / ski model.
Getting a slice of the small boat, outboard market is important to Sea Ray. They have obviously spent significant resources in developing this version of the popular 185 Sport. The fish / ski model is an impressive all purpose package, geared towards couples and small families. The value is in this boat’s ability to convert from a morning fishing rig, to an all--day tow vehicle for water toys, and finally as an afternoon cruiser for four adults.
Layout
This boat is all about utility, fun utility that is. The bow provides a carpeted casting platform and a removable swivel chair. They ensure greater fishing comfort, and the ideal spot to control the integrated trolling motor. A real plus is that the motor and controller can be quickly deployed or stowed.
The cockpit features seating for up to five and does it in classy Sea Ray style. There is not a lot of storage space on this boat, but there is a center-line locker that includes enough space for skis, wakeboards, and maybe a pair of fishing poles.
Passengers will have access to a large glove box as well as the CD stereo located on the companion side of the cockpit. Both the companion and the captain’s chairs swivel but only the skipper can slide forward and aft. In addition, tall people will find the sitting position very low in the boat.
At The Wheel
The helm supplies a simple layout for easy use, and is combined with sporty rubberized controls and chrome bezel analog gauges. The steering wheel does not tilt, but a convenient 12-volt power plug is handy for cell phones or spotlights.
The transom is low and easy to climb over to access the engine well and swim platform. The molded platform includes a telescoping swim ladder and offers enough room for two people to use at the same time.
The 185 has a trailerable length of 18’ overall, and narrow 7’ 6” beam which weighs just 1,850 lbs. Amazingly enough is the cost to run this boat. At cruise speed, we realized 6.7 miles to the gallon which calculates into over 120 mile from one tank full.
After spending some time last year in the saddle of the stern-drive powered 185 Sport, I was left with a smile and high expectations for the outboard propelled sister. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find that the two boats, much like personalities, were very different. The OB version combined with a 115 horsepower Mercury four-stroke, struggled to reach a top speed of 39.9 mph. I found the steering to be heavy during certain maneuvers. In contrast, The Outboard Sport handling at the dock was excellent. So whether you are skiing, fishing, or just enjoying a cruise on the lake, the Sea Ray 185 OB delivers all the excitement you may be looking for at a reasonable price.
