The all-new 510 Fly from Sea Ray signals the company’s entry into large motoryachts as this builder spreads its wings from the Sundancer model express cruisers that the brand has become synonymous with. The 510 Fly is the first of three models planned, and features three staterooms, including a full beam mid-cabin master and two heads. She’s designed to take full advantage of use of space and her fit and finish is on par with the best that Sea Ray has to offer.

With a LOA of 50’10” (15.5 m) the Sea Ray 510 Fly can be powered with either conventional V-drives or pods. Bow and stern thrusters are available and can be tied to a joystick.
The mission of the Sea Ray 510 Fly is to serve as the impetus for the company’s entry into the yachting market, or more importantly, to expand well beyond the bowriders and express cruisers that have served them so well. The first model will be the 510 Fly and she is to serve as the benchmark that the other yachts will emulate and build off of. Two others are planned, a 650 and the third to be positioned somewhere between these two, we are told.

• Exterior Stairs to the Flying Bridge – While this may not necessarily be a unique feature, it is significant as it allows for more room in the salon
• Standard Lower Helm – Often we see a lower helm station being moved to the options list and many don’t select it. This means that the flying bridge has to be committed to full time use and that means surrounding the whole thing in isinglass. Here, the flying bridge can be used in pleaseant conditions, and when the weather turns inclement, simply transition to the lower helm. Now the looks and distinguished profile of this beautiful yacht can remain intact.
Mooring System- Sea Ray provides an electric anchor windlass for chain and rope, which has foot switches. In the anchor locker there is a raw water washdown spigot. A galvanized anchor is standard and polished stainless steel is optional.
Standard Air Conditioning – Sea Ray went with a 40,000 BTU air conditioning system that should provide more than enough cooling to keep the interior comfortable on the warmest southern lat days, even with the greenhouse effect of the huge glass windows taken into account. It’s also a reverse cycle system so Northern boaters will also be kept comfortable in the shoulder seasons.
Radar Arch – The standard arch not only provides for a mounting point for the antenna array, but also for the optional Bimini top. With that, the flying bridge has shade when needed and sun when wanted.
LED Lighting – Sea Ray has transitioned completely away from the high-heat/high-load halogen lights and gone completely to LED lighting that provides better lighting without the heat or high demands on the electrical system. They also last significantly longer and are safer.
The flying bridge provides an aft gathering area, a double-wide seat next to the helm, and a forward sun pad. A small "flying galley" option is available. Note the raised sun pad to port in front of the table.
The flying bridge is as much a functional operational area as it is a welcoming gathering area. The starboard-mounted helm has a pair of bucket seats behind it. Directly across to port is a double-wide bench seat positioned behind a table allowing a total of four sets of eyes the ability to look forward in addition to providing the captain with some much welcome company. Additional scenery can be provided thanks to the sun pad just forward of the portside seating.
To the aft end of the flying bridge is U-shaped seating creating an inviting atmosphere for dining around a standard fiberglass table. An upgrade to a teak table is offered that would complement the optional teak decking. In either case, the dining area comes with a commanding view of the surroundings.
"Flying Galley." A refrigerator is included as standard under the wet bar counter. A grill and sink can be ordered and will be placed between the fore and aft seating areas. An optional fiberglass hardtop is available that includes lighting, a sunroof and an electrically retractable skylight. We think this option should be considered by people planning on doing serious cruising in the 510. With the addition of isinglass, it creates another three-season living space on the boat for relatively little money.
The standard arch provides an easy spot for mounting antennas and serves as a secure point for attaching an optional Bimini top. A hardtop is also offered.
A pair of 12” (30 cm) Raymarine e125 widescreen displays are offered for the flybridge helm. One is a GPS Chartplotter and a repeater for the primary color LCD, radar/GPS/chartplotter with an integrated 4 kW HD open array radar. This helm also includes a SmartCraft VesselView and an autopilot between the twin displays.
Underway the flying bridge will undoubtedly be the most popular spot on the 510 Fly. Here we can see the placement of the optional grill to the port side.
The main deck allows dual gathering areas, one inside and one outside. Opposing seating in the salon makes for a comfortable conversational area. The galley and lower helm station are elevated from the salon providing better views as well as an overview of the guests, and their needs, just aft.
The main deck is designed to provide maximum visibility and comfort while at the same time allowing for blending in the outside and inside with a seamless separation of the two areas. Opposing sofas provide a welcome conversational area and low windows allow clear sightlines to the horizon even from the seated position. This layout maximizes seating in a 51-footer, permitting 8 people to comfortably sit in the salon.
Dinner for 6. To starboard is the entertainment center tucked into the starboard aft corner of the salon. With a table leaf that folds out, and the addition of two folding chairs inboard, the table can seat 6 for dinner.
Good Galley Design. The elevated galley and lower helm are just two steps above the salon level and this provides a welcome overview of the gatherings while increasing the headroom in the staterooms below. Because the galley runs fore and aft the U-shape permits two people to work in the galley at once. This is an improvement, in our opinion, over conventional galleys with a dead-end aisle running from inside the boat outboard where only one person can easily work.
The standard refrigerator and freezer and the microwave oven are all below the counter and there is a sizeable amount of counter space for food prep. While we usually prefer a stand-up refrigerator/freezer, in this case such an option would destroy the 360-degree visibility as well as being an eyesore.
The usual cast of features are standard on the 510 signifying that this is indeed a cruising yacht and not a yacht that cruises when options are selected. The standards list includes freezer with icemaker next to the refrigerator, both with stainless steel fronts, a microwave/convection oven, a storage pantry, two-burner electric stove, solid surface counter and a coffeemaker.
Aft Deck. Moving aft, the cockpit is fully fiberglass lined for easy washdowns and is good-sized. Stairs to the flying bridge are to the starboard side and this opens up more useable space inside the salon. The lazarrette provides dedicated line and fender stowage. As an option a small crew cabin can be fitted in this space instead of stowage.
Cocktails/Dinner for 8? A bench seat provides the outdoor comfort and an optional portside seat converts the bench into L-shaped seating. A fiberglass table comes standard. Most folks will probably swap it for a teak one. With a large triangular teak table or one with opening leafs, and the addition of two folding chairs, we bet eight people can be seated here for cocktails or dinner.
Enclosed Afterdeck. If three-season entertaining is in the cards, then Sea Ray can also provide a cockpit enclosure thanks to the overhang of the flying bridge. A carpet liner will be a must-have addition if the teak decking isn’t chosen. We would definitely add the optional cockpit grill and icemaker, or perhaps a refrigerator. Just like adding a hardtop with isinglass to the flying bridge adds low-cost living space, so, too, does enclosing the aft deck for people planning on spending lots of time on the boat.
The lower helm station is standard and includes both the SmartCraft VesselView and DTS engine controls. Steering is power-assisted with the wheel mounted to a tilt base. A single or double Raymarine e125 can be fitted along with autopilot and an aft facing bridge camera is interfaced with the e125.
The main salon offers opposing seating with beautiful views. The wood decking is optional but we sure wouldn’t want our 510 to be without it.
Two More Gathering Areas
The stern swim platform and the bow sun pad are two areas that are sure to be popular onboard the 510. A hydraulic option is available for the swim platform, and long experience has now shown builders that this popular option serves owners well as a launching platform for tender storage as well as creating the now requisite teak beach.
Tender Handling. For owners who will be using the 510 Fly as a serious cruising boat, we would mark the hydraulic swim platform as a necessity as there is nowhere else to place the yacht's tender while underway.
The swim platform can be used in the traditional manner seen here, or lowered to launch a tender and at the same time form a private beach when dropped just below the surface.
At the bow, another welcome relaxation spot in the form of a double-wide sun pad. A split bow rail of offered for boarding from this area.
For the accommodations deck, Sea Ray went with a three-stateroom/two-head layout that includes a full beam master with the berth right on the centerline.
For the Ship's Master(s). Sea Ray went with a three-stateroom/two-head layout that includes a full beam master with the queen berth mounted on the lateral and longitudinal centerlines. This is the most comfortable place on the boat in a seaway. To port is a long dresser and a somewhat modest hanging locker. (In fact, both of the other staterooms have greater hanging locker space.)
Tea for Two. A starboard dresser can be swapped out for opposing seating with a storage table next to the hull side window, as shown in the image above. This option creates a cozy little, romantic spot for the owners to unwind at night with a bottle of Dom Perignon. Conversely, it’s a good spot to linger in the morning with a bracing cup of coffee and look out the large portlight.
Master Head. The master head is good-sized for a 51’ (15.54 m) motoryacht. With three separate areas, two people can get ready for an evening ashore at the same time. The separate shower stall has a bench seat and there is good storage in the outboard cabinets.
Beautiful overhead treatments highlight the full beam master stateroom. Note the drop-down flooring at left that is between the stringers, producing more headroom.
The master head takes full advantage of the skillset of Sea Ray’s joiner workers and provides a comfortable balance between finish and functionality. There’s plenty of storage for full size shower accessories and the outlets for hair driers and electric toothbrushes weren’t left out of the mix.
The VIP. Forward is the usual accommodation for a queen-sized island berth VIP stateroom. To the port side is a twin berth stateroom, which naturally converts to a single berth. Heads include VacuFlush toilets, power vents, Grohe fittings and vanities with solid surface counters.
The forward VIP takes good advantage of the storage space above the hull side windows as well as below the berth. We also like the storage shelves under the LED reading lights. The dark-toned valance is a graceful design element that enhances the overall looks of this cabin.
Not a bad place to be a guest, with twin berths that easily convert to a single. The mirrored bulkhead and lengthy hull side window add to the staterooms allure.
The guest head/day head is well appointed with a walk-in shower, wood cabinetry and solid surface counters. The shower presents an opening portlight for ventilation.
For appointments, the entire deck is carpeted with Stainmaster carpets. All curtains are custom made in-house. Wood cabinetry comes in walnut or rift-cut white oak and the window treatments feature silver alloy blinds.
Propulsion and Engines
Choice of Pods or V-Drives. The 510 Fly should be an easy boat to handle whether she’s purchased with standard V-drives or pods. Obviously pods will bring joystick functionality to the table, and its associated ease of maneuverability, but the most important reasons to have pod drives is for improved handling in a following sea, and improved fuel-efficiency at cruising speeds.
Our comparison testing of pods vs. inboard drives has been limited to boats in the low-40' (12.2 m) range. There, we have found that pods are 30%+ more efficient than conventional inboard drives. It remains to be proved if pods are as efficient in larger boats such as this motoryacht, or if they will actually make the boat go faster, WOT. Since the 510 Fly is offered both ways it is an ideal candidate for this sort of empirical comparison testing.
V-drives are standard, and a joystick can be fitted that incorporates both the drives and a bow thruster for the best of both worlds at a fraction of the cost of a pod drive system. The V-drives draw 52" (132 cm), one inch less than with the Zeus pods, but the boat is slightly heavier at 47,100 lbs. (21,409 kgs.) vs. 46,800 lbs. (21,228 kgs) for the pods.
Standard power includes a pair of 600-hp Cummins QSC diesels with V-drives. Optional packages consists of twin 684-hp Cummins QSM 11’s with V-drives or Zeus Cummins QSC 600, and this second option includes Skyhook position keeping.
The standard generator is a 13.5 kW Onan with sound shield, remote start, muffler, and its own closed cooling system, which is the preferred way to go. Optional generators are 11 kW and 17 kW, both from Onan. Some optional equipment requires more power, and in that case the larger generator is required. Sea Ray has selected Onan because it is a division of Cummins, therefore their engine techs can work on it.
The Sea Ray 510 Fly is a small motoryacht that can be taken on long cruising adventures to places such as the Bahamas and up the Inside Passage to Alaska.
When we compared the Sea Ray 510 Fly to 7 other flying bridge motoryachts ranging from 48' to 54' (14.6 m to 16.4 m) from five different brands we discovered a few interesting things --
1) While all five of these boats had roughly the same basic layout in most cases, they were quite different in their basic specifications.
2) The heavier the boats, the bigger the engines were. It seemed as if all builders felt that their boats had to exceed 30 knots WOT to be competitive.
3) All models but Sea Ray are built in Europe.
4) Selecting the best boat for any individual's needs will require close scrutiny of a number of details such as ergonomics, quality of materials and workmanship, fuel consumption at best cruise, and functionality for the intended application.
The 510 Fly's profile is long and low just as one might expect from a Euro-design sport yacht. Add a hardtop and isinglass to the flying bridge and this boat morphs into an all-weather cruising motoryacht.
The Sea Ray 510 Fly is the largest boat in the builder's "Sport Yacht" category of six boats. But in fact she is a transitional boat to a new series of motoryachts that Sea Ray is creating that will be far larger than 51' (15.54 m).
Motoryacht Class. She is about as small as a true motoryacht can be and still fill all of the required functions. The Sea Ray 510 Fly fulfills most of those functions. She was designed to be competitive with her European competition, where boats of this size and type are basically used as day boats to go from a marina to a beach and back, or take short trips from marina to marina at high speed.
Options for a Specific Purpose. With the addition of a few options, the 510 Fly can do much more than be a day boat for entertaining. For example, in the case of shipping a tender to make her a true cruising vessel, the optional hydraulic swim platform will have to be included. With the addition of a hardtop and isinglass on the flying bridge, she can have the helm visibility that only a flying bridge can provide in three seasons.
