The Monterey 320 SY has an impressive list of standard features and a level of luxury that make her worth looking into.
Our first glance of the Monterey 320 SY showed a boat with Sterling and Onyx graphics, and as it turned out, this was one of 10 graphics packages offered on this yacht. That’s a welcome start for a boat that is in a market dominated with an “any color you want as long as it’s white” mentality. The swim platform has an optional teak inlay (add $2,883), and it does a great job of adding to the luxurious look that this boat already presented. The cockpit is the usual layout of U-shaped settee to starboard with a removable pedestal table and sunpad aft. There is an entertainment center to port with the option of adding a refrigerator (add $1,333), an icemaker (add $1,500), and even the now requisite LCD TV (add $3,000).
While we’re not big fans of cockpit TVs, if you’re going to do it, do it right. Monterey incorporates the TV's external inputs into the radar arch. Very convenient.
While those may not be on your “must have” list, the cockpit carpet should be (add $917) for keeping the bare feet cool and adding traction while in a seaway. We love that the cockpit deck is all on one level and a step up from the swim platform for improved visibility. The pedestal table mount is on a vertical panel against the settee. We’d rather see it mounted on the deck so that it can hold more weight, for leaning on, and won’t get in the way when you have to “scootch” across the seat.
Note how the cockpit deck is all on one level. The port side entertainment center has options for an icemaker or refrigerator. The cockpit carpet is optional. Check out the wide helm and companions seats. Integrated molded steps lead to the bow. The pedestal table mount is vertical below the seats. This usually turns into a warranty repair when people start leaning on the table.
We like the layout of the helm. It’s very businesslike with good sightlines and functionality. Monterey offers three electronics packages, with the top end having the Raymarine E-80 VHF, chartplotter/GPS, and radar (add $11,667). The chartplotter display is front and center and engine info goes across the top, where you can see at a glance if something is amiss.
We’d rather see the drink holders moved to the sides of the seat and save the coveted dash space for a non-skid surface for “stuff”... sunglasses, cell phone, etc... The rocker switches are laid out in a very workable position and grouped properly, and circuit breakers are in an easily accessed spot right below the panel and in clear sight. The grey panel reduces glare and has a no nonsense military appeal to it. An upgrade to the stainless steel windshield frame (add $4,667) might be advisable for saltwater boaters, plus it looks classy. Seating is double wide for both the helmsman (40”/101.6 cm) and the portside companion (36”/91.44 cm).
Heading below, we find a cabin that offers roominess and functionality. Forward is a full size berth with a seat in front of it. This is a very clever layout, as it allows for full seating in the salon while still being able to use the berth if desired. This arrangement does have the drawback of not allowing for storage drawers on the sides of the berth, and accessibility is always a climb, but since most buyers of these boats use the berths sparingly, it’s a fair trade off and a workable solution to the demands of space.
Notice how the berth has seating in front for better utilization of the salon. The sofa, to starboard converts to a sleeper, the deck is synthetic wood for good looks and low maintenance.
The decking is a synthetic wood, and it has a nice teak and holly look to it. There’s an option for a lay down carpet for the cabin (add $417) but what a shame it would be to cover that deck up. Natural light enters the cabin from both the sides and above. In the galley, the coffeemaker, dual-burner electric stove, designer faucet, microwave, refrigerator, and stainless steel sink are all standard. To starboard, the salon includes a 22'' flat screen, sleeper sofa, and stereo. The pedestal table can be removed for added space, and placed in dedicated storage.
Notice the wood slats in the mini blinds. The open stairs keep the guests in the mid-cabin part of the conversation, and a privacy curtain closes the area off for sleeping. The 22'' flat screen is standard, as is the sleeper sofa. Notice the fold down armrest in the sofa that also includes storage for the TV remote.
To aft is the mid-cabin stateroom that can be closed off with a privacy curtain, or left open for seating and joining the conversation in the main salon.
Specs and power…
If choices are what make the difference between you buying a boat and walking away, then the Monterey 320 SY should have you sitting at the table with your checkbook. If the graphics choices aren’t enough to convince you, then a glance at the power choices will do the trick. There are no less than 30 engine options to power your 320 SY with, all divided between Merc and Volvo. The base boat, with twin Volvo 5.0 270-hp GXi engines has a MSRP of $216,321.
The Monterey 320 SY has a LOA of 33’10” (10.3 m), a beam of 10’10” (3.3 m), and a draft of 40” (101.6 cm). As this is a new model, and barely off the assembly line, she hasn’t made her way to the scales yet, so displacement is still TBD. Fuel capacity is 180 gallons (681.37 L) and water is 42 gallons (159 L).
With all that said, if you’re still on the fence, then the deciding factor to the quality of the boat you’re going to buy is warranty. Monterey stands behind their product with a lifetime limited warranty, and that speaks volumes. Clearly, Monterey built the new 320 SY to hold its own in a head to head comparison with any other boat on your short list. All that’s left to compare are the performance numbers, and they will be coming shortly. Let’s at least give Monterey a chance to fill the tanks first. Stay tuned.
