McKinna Yachts 62 Express (2009-)
McKinna Yachts 62 Express (2009-)
This huge express has either two large ensuite staterooms or a three cabin configuration, and in both cases the details and joinerwork throughout are what you would expect in a fine yacht. The engine room has 6’ 5” headroom and she has the largest cockpit we’ve ever seen on an express motoryacht south of 90’. It is powered by twin Caterpillar C-18-18L 1000-hp diesels turning Nibral 5-bladed props which the company tells us will drive her at 34 knots WOT.

McKinna Yachts 62 Express (2009-) Captain's Report

McKinna 62 Configurations

The McKinna 62 comes in two rather different configurations.

The McKinna 62 has a 17’ 3” beam, draws 4’5” and displaces 66,000 lbs. She was designed by veteran Howard Apollonio who has drawn everything from small boats to megayachts and has quite a following, particularly on the West Coast. The boat is built for McKinna in Taiwan. The bridge deck/salon is bright and airy with glass all around, plus a sliding sunroof. The helm and companion seats are by Stidd. Abaft the helm is a salon with wet bar and stools which provide plenty of room for entertaining or relaxing inside at anchor. Pass through sliding glass doors and you are on the aft deck which has a teak sole and wrap around leather settee.

McKinna 62 Salon/Helm

Salon/helm on the bridge deck.

To our mind one of the things that sets the McKinna 62 apart from anything built in the U.S. or Europe is the huge cockpit that can handle a world class fighting chair if your chose to go that route. While the boat is not set up to be a sportfishing boat, it could certainly provide that function with a few add-ons. Otherwise the cockpit makes a great outdoor entertainment venue and is equipped with an icemaker, refer, sink, BBQ grill, stereo and shower.

McKinna 62 Salon Below

The salon below is huge and the finish work is of top yacht quality.

Step below and you discover a large salon and galley paneled high gloss African cherry. The large portlights are dressed with Hunter Douglass silhouette blinds. Like virtually every other piece of equipment on the boat, the galley fixtures are all from the best name brands – Sub Zero full-size stand up refer, plus under counter freezer drawers, Fisher/Paykel dishwasher, Kenyon four burner cooktop, Asko stackable washer/dryer, and Insinkerator garbage disposal, among other things.

McKinna 62 Master

The full beam master stateroom with ensuite head.

The full-beam master is aft where it should be and is finished just as would be a $4 million megayacht. For example, the ensuite head has a marble sole, the shower door is frameless, and all drawers and cabinets have German push-pulls.

The VIP stateroom is forward and has an queen bed on the centerline and the kind of room one would expect to find on a 62-footer.

She has a 21.5KW Onan generator, 48,000 BTU of AC/heat, Wesmar V1-12E bow thruster, Cablemaster, Head Hunter head system, and about everything else we can imagine to make this boat ready for serious cruising with the finest available equipment.

McKinna 62 Engine Room

An engine room with 6’5” headroom his hard to find these days.

Without going into the details, we can say that overall the boat is well-built to the kind of standards that one would expect from a quality boat builder. The choices of woods, equipment, systems and materials are generally what the staff of BoatTEST would specify if we were building a boat from scratch. Go to the McKinna website for all of the details. Suffice it to say that this boat is not your typical cookie-cutter plastic boat from Bubba-craft.

McKinna 62 Run

With a top speed of about 34 knots, according to the builder, you will be able to keep up with most of the little boats at your yacht club.

The best thing of all about this boat is the price. As we keep saying, this is the year to score the boat of your dreams for unheard of prices, and the McKinna 62 is one of those deals. Essentially, she is selling for what you would pay for a 55’ to 60’ boat that has nowhere near the quality of finishing work and the quantity of top-line equipment which has been built into this boat. Take a look and you’ll see what we mean.
