Rinker RX 1 (Not in Production) Captain's Report

Tested by Capt. Bob Smith

Lake Wawasee, IN proved to be a great place to put Rinker’s new models to the test this year. I welcomed the change from the extreme heat and humidity of my Florida home, as well as the daily thunderstorms, to the cooler Indiana weather we encountered on the lake.

Design

First under the radar gun for us was their Xtreme Series RX1. This boat is built on their time proven Captiva 212 Bowrider. This design lent itself nicely to the demands of today’s extreme watersports enthusiast. While we did test an early version last year, the RX1 is a full member of today’s lineup. It is loaded up with a feature-rich package that includes a well-designed tower and awesome sound system. This year’s custom designed tower is heavy-duty tubular aluminum topped with an anchor light, swivel tow point and two monster speakers. A double wakeboard rack is on either side with bungee cords to securely lock the boards in place when not in use.

Driving the RX1 was no chore at all. Once you learn to use the Perfect Pass system, controlling the wake for the boarder is simple. Choose the speed, engage, remember it overshoots first and enjoy the action! With a skier behind you, you aren’t going to make many real tight turns, but she does handle them very well. Her exterior graphics grab your attention as you approach and you have a choice of red or yellow hull colors.

Up in the bow there’s good space for storage and an anchor well with rubber keepers for a Danforth. My test ride had plush cushions, which converted the entire front area into a sun lounge or sun pad space. The helm had standard instrumentation plus a digital depth finder and the Perfect Pass system. It also included a 12-volt adaptor to keep the cell phone charged. The stereo is mounted to the right of the wheel as well so you stay in total control.

Cockpit

This boat has a coaxial sound system with Kenwood six CD changer and power amplifier. Bucket seats have swivel and slide adjustments for you personal comfort. Cup holders are strategically located around the cockpit with more storage cubbies. In-floor storage for skis and other long items is under the snap-in carpet between the helm and companion seat.

Rear seating is in an L shape and it has a starboard walk-through so the driver can keep a close eye on anyone boarding or departing the swim platform. The engine hatch doubles as a spacious stern sun pad. At the stern you have a nested telescoping three-step swim ladder, transom mounted tow eye, and grab rail for boarding. My test boat also had a nice extended swim platform and a stereo remote at the stern so you don’t have to leave the water to change the tunes.

Specs

The RX1 is 20 feet 10 inches long and 8 feet 6 inches wide, and weighs in at over 3,120 pounds with the hinged tower. She sports 20 degrees of deadrise for a smoother ride and a transferable five year hull warranty.

Test Run

My test boat had a five liter 260 horse power MerCruiser MPI with an Alpha drive and a 19” High Five prop. I carried two other healthy guys along for the ride and she still managed to get a top speed of over 47 mph. At 3000 rpms, she traveled along at 25 mph burning around 8 gallons per hour for a range of 120 miles. At top end, she burned about 19 gallons per hour for a shorter range of 95 miles.

Rinker’s Xtreme RX1 proved to be quite a feature packed example of how to enjoy a fun day on the water.
