Vectra 2200 F (2009-)
Unlike pontoons boats but more like a Bowrider, the 2200 Fish offers snap-in carpet to make it super simple to clean up after a day of cruising or fishing.
Vectra Space Deck 2200 Fish
By Capt. Rob Smith
Vectra is a part of the Smoker Craft family of boats. This model looks very much like a pontoon boat, yet has the fiberglass hull of a deck boat which creates the space available topside. The Space Deck Model 2200 F is designed as a fishing rig with room for a family to enjoy a day on the water. She has the extra features of many high end pontoons, like a changing room onboard. This value-oriented rig has sole locker storage for skis and a ski tow so you can take full advantage of the 200 hp this boat is rated for.
Starting at the foredeck
As a fishing rig, you want unencumbered room to cast. The 2200 F has two bases for casting chairs in front of the bulwarks so you can freely work lines. Keep in mind, these are just for trolling or use at anchor, never with the big engine running! The Vectra 2200 F is pre-rigged for 12/24V trolling motor systems. The surrounding bulwarks are what reminded me so much of a pontoon boat. Like a pontoon, it has a bow entry with Posi-Lock gate. The decks are fiberglass and the builder offer optional snap-in carpet for simple, easier to clean decks. There are two lockers in the bow area. The forward locker is the livewell. Although it is inside of the bulwarks, you can leave the gate open and have quick access to the bait when a fish steals what is on your line. Just aft of the livewell is another locker where you can stow your water toys, skis or canvas.
The bench seats up front are rotocast for durability and provide good storage. I didn’t notice drains at the bottom of the boxes, but I did see deep channels around the tops to drain any water away and keep the boxes dry. Instead of mounting the speakers in these bases like most builders do, Smoker Craft mounted them higher in the back rests where the sound is more likely to reach the people on board (last I checked, we don’t listen with our feet).
I have seen changing rooms on many pontoon boats before. The Vectra 2200 F incorporates it a little differently into the forward end cap of the stern L-bench seat. I like it. This arrangement takes advantage of room carved out for the side entry gate and doesn’t use up room at the stern. One of the problems I have encountered when trying to stow a changing station back into an end cap like this is getting all the material inside as I close it. Smoker Craft thought of that and provided a mesh pocket that you stuff the material into before closing the unit back up. The aft seating also has rotocast seat bases. The Vectra 2200 F has a standard porta-potti for family convenience so you don’t have so many trips to the marina. There is the standard table and post for snacks, carry-on cooler and stern sun pad. A single bimini cover is standard, dual tops are optional for maximum coverage.
At the helm
The Vectra 2200 F has a deluxe helm seat with slider, swing away arm rests and swivel so you can join in the conversation at the stern when at anchor. The standard sound system is an AM/FM Stereo with an auxiliary jack for your MP3 or iPod. Optionally, you can have a satellite ready stereo for uninterrupted music, sports or talk radio. I found visibility and ergonomics at the helm to be very good.
The stern has another Posi-Lock transom gate entry. My test model had a four step telescoping swim ladder and a ski rack that surrounded the Honda 150hp outboard it was rigged with. Under the padded sundeck, you have the fuel cell on the port side along with the cranking battery and some limited storage.
The Vectra Space Deck 2200 F measures 22’3” length overall and has a beam of 8’6” so she is fine to trailer without permits. She weighs 3147 lbs. dry without engine and carries 50 gallons of fuel. She is rated for up to a 200 hp outboard, with a seating capacity for 12 people and a weight capacity of 2750 lbs.
I found this model to be a great combination of the features of a pontoon boat topside with the performance of a deck boat below. It delivers space for the entire family and the neighbors, yet has the ability to pull a skier or the kids on a tube.
