When we sent Capt. Steve to test the 2101 WA we had no idea that he’d spend most of his time onboard reminiscing about his summer pulling conch pots from Nantucket Sound. It seems he couldn’t help but feel that he was back on that little work boat hauling and dropping sets. “All that was missing was the gin pole, gunwale winch and work table,” he told us. As fishy as all of this sounds, the fact is that the builder has also added a lot of creature comforts which families will like for cruising weekends. Our full test and walkthrough videos are currently in post-production, but for now, you can take a look at the test numbers and full report to see how Striper has done with their version of an on the water SUV.

Capt. Steve Says...

The thing that kept bringing me back was the panel that was taken right out of the workboat from 30 years ago. It worked then and it works now. It’s only when I turned around that I was brought back to reality, and the present. The helm wheel was mounted almost vertically, just like the traditional downeasters, and off to the starboard of the panel was a recessed area for surface mounting electronics, and in my case, filled with notepads of Loran numbers, weight counts, met reports, and any other junk needed to get through a day of hauling gear. Thosae were good times... good memories.

With roomy side decks and ample cockpit space, the 2101 WA is a versatile workboat that has a play side as well.


Striper took the hull of their 2105 Center Console and re-configured the interior to accommodate the walk around cabin. Thus, the similarities between the two boats begin and end from the gunwale down. The new WA configuration adds 305 lbs. and definitely changes the handling a bit. This boat has a more solid feel to it, and because the added weight is a bit higher up from the center of gravity, the turns have less of a sportboat feel and more of a workboat feel.

When putting the 2101 WA into a turn, there is a roll of about 6-7 degrees, but it’s the roll rate that takes away from the sporty feel. It’s slower and more defined, and a bit farther over than the CC, which naturally keeps its weight lower. To be sure, it’s still a comfortable feel, but I think the families will appreciate this characteristic more as it is more sedate, less jerky and therefore more comfortable.

The Seaswirl 2101 WA makes use of space not needed below to install a single sea with cushion on the front of the trunk cabin.

Our test boat was equipped with a Yamaha 200 four-stroke which still did not manage to give the 2101 WA sportboat acceleration, but again, this is a good thing as it’s just not that type of boat anymore. Still, we reached planing speed in a very respectable 4.7 seconds and cruised through 30 mph 7.8 seconds later. Our top speed was found to be 42.5 mph reached at 5900 rpm. At that speed the 200 was drinking 18.4 gallons an hour which still gave us a range of 218 miles.

Pulled back to a more economic cruise, 4000 rpm had us moving along at 23.7 mph with only a 7.9 gph fuel burn. Now we were good to go for 283 miles leaving a 10% reserve in the 2101’s 105 gallon (397 L) fuel tank.


There were no trim tabs on our test boat, although there is an option for them. (My opinion… save your money.) I found no need for tabs, either to accommodate an uneven distribution of weight or to aid handing and performance. Engine trim was adequate to improve cruise angle and the running performance. Speaking of which, it didn’t take much of that either. Don’t go nuts, just a few pulses will get you where you need to be. If you go too high on the trim, the bow will porpoise and you must drop the engine back down a bit.

While the 2101 may have a workboat feel, the fact is she’s all comfort. As is usual in most single-engine OBs, there are dual swim platforms to either side with a three step boarding ladder mounted to the port side. There are two jump seats mounted to pedestals at the aft quarters of the cockpit, and I could live with another mounting arrangement for these seats. The pedestals just didn’t seem to give a very solid mount to the seat. When sitting on them, I was able to sway the seat a bit, and once you get those pedestals set into the base, they’re hard to remove. In discussing this matter with Striper, I was assured that a fix is in the works to a more stable seat mounted on molded-in rails. Between the two jump seats was a 30 gal (113.6 L) aerated livewell, with white interior, white LED light inside and rounded corners.

The optional hardtop not only adds to the looks and functionality of the 2101 WA but certainly adds convenient handholds for accessing the side decks. Look closely between the two aft rail stanchions. Just behind the midship cleat you can see the channel that diverts shipped water back over the side, to keep the cockpit dry.

As a captain, I always ask myself how well a boat is suited for offshore work. While this is certainly an inshore boat, it can experience life in the near coastal realm, and that means water is likely to ship over the bow. Striper seems to agree with that assessment as the side decks are recessed between molded toe rails that end at a channel that directs the flow of water overboard, well before reaching the cockpit.

The cockpit is, of course, self-draining.

The cockpit bolsters are at a height that brought them up to about mid-thigh, which is just about right when fighting fish. They wrap around the entire aft cockpit, even across the forward side of the livewell.

Our test boat was equipped with standard raw water washdown. A fresh water connection is optional.

Forward Cockpit and Helm Area

Just at the forward part of the aft cockpit, there are two more padded seats to port and starboard facing aft, under which are two 92 qt. fish lockers. Prepare for these cushions to take some abuse as the seats also do double duty as steps to the side decks.

Both the helm and passenger seats are on raised platforms that make for great visibility. Striper calls them "all-weather", I call them molded plastic. They’re exactly what they need to be, sturdy and solid. Both have swivel and slide capability. The passenger and captain both get a flip-down footrest.

The helm I’ve touched on and it’s as functional as any hard working boat I’ve been on. The large well to starboard is ready to accept whatever electronics you deem adequate, and with a hard top I’d certainly opt for a multifunction display that I can flip from radar to fishfinder when I reach the fishing grounds.

Our test boat was not only equipped with the optional hardtop, but the Alaska package as well. It consists of wrap around windows and a large drop down curtain at the aft end of the helm deck. We also had optional rocket launchers and a single spreader light up above. Since I was testing this boat on a 50-degree day, I certainly appreciated the enclosure, and anyone who reads my reviews knows how I feel about glass over Isinglass.

One aspect that needs work, however, is the opening side windows. They open about 3” (7.6 cm), and when closed are able to be locked in position with rotating dogs like you may see on cabin portlights. The problem is, the frame at the back of these sliders is large, and sticks out right where my elbow goes when pulling power off. I managed to smack my funny bone right at the beginning of the test, but rest assured it only happened once. It didn’t take long to make adjusting my arm’s position into habit.

Additional options on our test boat included a starboard side windshield wiper and a defroster, which aided in warming the helm. With the aft curtains deployed you’ll find yourself fishing into the winter just before the ice forms.


On the left side of the full width helm console is a companionway to the cabin. Keeping in mind that this is a walk-around fish boat, you should not come to the table expecting a large cabin for two couples. This was form meeting function. A galley with sink and stove is optional and will reside to port. A standard Porta-Potti lies to starboard under a cushion and a pump-out is optional. The berth itself is roomy enough for two to sleep comfortably, and a dining table is optional. Natural light comes from two side portlights and an overhead Bomar hatch that also provides emergency exit capability.

Notice the convenient storage shelf that wraps around the berth. Forward of the hatch is a recessed area for a forward bow seat. Hardly an intrusion here, and a great feature topside up forward. The table is optional.


Getting up to the bow is made easier with the supports of the optional hard top. Bow rails come up to just above my knee and forward of the cabin is a seat with a small cushion. Nice spot to have a sit at the end of the day and enjoy the run back to the dock, or just sit and relax while on the hook as the sun sets.

There was no windlass, and I don’t think there needs to be. The anchor on a boat this size is manageable so you’ll be fine.

Anyone familiar with Striper knows the brand has integrity and the company proves that with a 10-year hull warranty that’s transferrable. What I found was a solid boat that handled well, performed well, and took me back to a time when a work boat was exactly that. It was time well spent and this boat will make an enjoyable day fishing on the water, that much more enjoyable at night.
