Rinker R2 (Not in Production) Captain's Report

Tested By Capt. Bob Smith

The R2 maximizes interior space and does a great job of delivering the room of a much larger bowrider. Interior freeboard is high enough to be safe for the little ones to run around without fear of them easily taking a header into the water before you can grab their collar. The sound system they have will keep most audiophiles happy underway and certainly maintain the tunes for the rest of us. The satellite ready radio gives you complete control of what you are listening to and the CD changer system lets you create your own mix, if you choose.

This year Rinker has gone to a rich Omnova vinyl on all the seating and uses a silver and beige twisted pile carpet for a comfortable floor even on a hot day. Also new for 2005 are Easy Rider bucket seats by Atwood with spring suspension for comfort underway as well as an armrest built into the side so the driver can keep a hand on the throttle without fatiguing their arm in the process.

Extreme Features

The R2 starts with some attention grabbing hot graphics on the hull as well as a very noticeable wake board tower. The tower has a slick system where two healthy guys can release two points on each side and fold the tower so the boat can fit into the garage or carport under cover.

Our boat also had a monster amplifier and killer sound system which included two barrel speakers mounted to the tower and aimed at the platform where everyone is bound to be handing out at anchor. The board racks can hold at least four boards to keep them at the ready. Six speakers throughout the boat make sure everyone has a clear shot at the tunes. The transom remote keeps you in control of the system, including a six-disc CD changer, even when you are at the stern. The large mirror insures the driver gets a clear view of the fun going on behind and the optional Perfect Pass speed control system makes it a snap to keep the wake just right.

Abundant Seating

Bow seating wraps from the helm and on around to the companion side. Lounger backs are built into the front of the helm and companion pods so two can stretch out and relax up front. Under the peak seat is storage for the anchor and rode. Two rubber clips hold a Danforth style anchor tight so you don’t have to listen to the rattle underway. The wraparound windshield has a nice walkthrough with large rubber bumpers to protect the hull when it is open.

Layout

A door on the side of the helm pod gives you access to some storage space and is the typical location to mount a stereo booster and multi-CD changer system. The helm has Faria gauges with bright metal bezels and back lighting for night viewing. All electronics are protected by circuit breakers and you have a 12 volt socket to keep the cell phone and other portable gear charged up.

I found the slight elevation built into the floor under the bucket seats a slight distraction when moving around in the cockpit. The inch or so was just enough to keep stubbing my toe. While this was a distraction I learned my lesson, and was able to notice how sturdy and wobble free the seats were, even at wide-open-throttle.

Over on the companion side, you have a tray built into the top along with a covered glove box. The companion pod has space inside for storing the table, and room enough for changing privacy and a porta-potti. The other slight distraction I encountered was the door to the porta-potti and changing area under the companion station. It was a bit clunky and the little knob that doubles as a key seemed fragile.

In the floor between the helm and companion pod is a large storage space for long skis, wakeboards and other gear. Behind the companion seat is a station with a covered removable trash bin, cup holder and a seat with a wraparound comfortable back.

The sun pad is a good size that two can hang out together on. The sun pad doubles as the cover for the engine. Bright LED lights are used in the cockpit for night lights and two are in the engine space to light this area up. A large bin is located in here to dry wet life jackets by using the normal engine heat, and there’s lots of room to reach the typical maintenance points on the engine.

Our test boat had the extended swim platform attached which adds nearly enough space to hold a dance on the stern. A three-step boarding ladder and a swim shower supported by a ten gallon water tank are also back here.

Specs

Rinker’s R2 measures in at 23’6” in length overall with an 8’6” beam. She weighs in at 4,100 pounds dry and has a draft of 22” with the outdrive up, and 36” with the outdrive in the lowest position. With a fuel capacity of 75 gallons and fresh water capacity of 10 gallons to rinse off, you can expect a full day of fun on the water.

The R2 has a standard power plant selection of either a MerCruiser 5.0L 260-hp MPI with Alpha drive or a Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi SX drive with 270-hp. You can choose between three optional MerCruiser and three Volvo sterndrives up to 320-hp, including Volvo’s Penta XDP Ocean Drive.

Performance and Ride

We tested the R2 on a fresh water lake in northern Indiana with two people on board and 1/8 of a tank of fuel. Our test boat was powered with MerCruiser’s 300-hp 350 Mag MPI with Bravo II sterndrive and 26” pitch prop. Temperatures were mild with 70 degrees and winds were only 5mph. She was quick to get on plane in only 3.7 seconds and was passing 30mph in only 7.7 seconds. We found the optimal cruise speed to be 26.9 mph at 3000rpm, which burned 7.8gph for a range of 234 miles on a full tank of fuel. At full throttle the R2 ran a top speed of 49.5mph turning 5000rpm.

The R2 accelerated very well into turns without sliding through them and felt genuinely in control at all speeds. Pulling into the slips and out, even in a strong breeze was without incident with quick, responsive controls and excellent visibility.
