Polaris Freedom Captain's Report

Feel The Freedom

Tested by Capt. Brandon De Natale

For those who are looking to get their feet wet in owning a watercraft Polaris has made the choice a little easier. The Freedom by Polaris is the company’s entry-level PWC. Just because it’s an entry level craft doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice anything. The Freedom provides some unique features from its larger brethren to produce a family watercraft that can truly be enjoyed by all.

Design

The design of the Freedom is very user-friendly oriented. It features sleek styling and a comfortable seat for two plus riders. The full “V” hull and the 4+ foot beam really make the craft stable. This is a great feature that will surely please anyone with small children. Polaris has also incorporated a tow hook in the back that is sure to come in handy while spending a day water skiing or pulling the kids in a tube. And when you’re ready to get back onboard the Freedom’s extra wide boarding platform and conveniently located grab rail make it very easy and safe.

Provisioning for the entire day isn’t a problem since the Freedom boasts 30 gallons of storage space. There’s forward storage under the front hood and a small glove box that’s perfect for storing any item you want to keep within easy reach. The Freedom is also kid friendly, as it features a handhold on the front steering bar to provide a solid grip while underway. This feature helps keep small children safe and always within easy reach. The footwells are also wide and provide easy maneuvering when changing positions out on the water.

One of the things that I really liked on the Freedom was the way I always felt in control. The hull design and well-placed instruments really made a difference, and I was also happy with the sturdiness off the craft. You would expect a well-balanced stable platform for an entry-level model.

Engine

One of the great benefits to having highbred siblings is you wind up inheriting a little of their genes. The Freedom is no exception. She features a 95-hp Polaris Marine 701cc low emission two-stroke engine. This provided excellent reliable performance with minimum maintenance. There is good access to the engine from under the seat and checking the fluid levels are easy enough for the first timer. The use of minimal gauges at the helm also keeps the vital instrumentation within view of the driver. This helps to limit the distraction while driving. And with a 17.8gallon fuel tank it’s easy to get a full day out on the water with the whole family.

Test

One of the things that I liked most about the Freedom was its simplicity. It’s full of modern conveniences and with its deep-V hull design and generous beam she provides an exciting and stable ride. I rode the Freedom after riding on some of the MSX models which gave an incredible ride and still felt that if I was looking for a watercraft for a small family, that would provide enough power for dad to water ski off the back but still provide enough room for the entire family to ride together then this would be it.

The Freedom is the kind of PWC that you can send your children out on and not have to worry that they are going to be overpowered. To the flip side, it’s still the kind of craft that will provide anyone looking for a fast exciting ride, loads of enjoyment. Polaris has really incorporated loads of features and great performance into a quality-built, affordable watercraft.
