Kadey-Krogen 58’

The Kadey-Krogen 58 is a displacement hull trawler that was built with customer feedback to produce the flagship of the company. With its classic trawler styling and impressive Portuguese bridge they have created a comfortable, safe and economical vessel capable of traversing any of the world’s oceans.

With its displacement hull and 7,000 pounds of encapsulated lead in the keel the 58 provides comfort when riding in any sea. The hull was designed to produce a self-righting moment when the boat rolls to 85 degrees. Also the outboard placement of the two John Deere, 154-hp diesels provide more stability. And the twin keels provide more of a dampening effect when rolling. The boat we tested on had the optional stabilizers, which really helped during our run. Although she rolled a little when off, when turned on they really helped smooth out the ride and will also provide better fuel economy and quicker passage times.

The vessel is constructed by Asia Harbor Yacht Company in Taiwan and most of the components are from the US and abroad. All fittings and supplies are top quality and the attention to detail is superb. I could hardly believe that I was on a fiberglass boat with all the wood on board. Although the boats are production built there are many features that the owner can have a say in and different layouts for different lifestyles. This is a very appealing factor that many customers like. It’s as close to semi-custom as you can get.

Designed with the cruising couple in mind, this boat was designed more for safety and comfort, than with accommodations for guests. Many Krogen owners are either retired and live aboard or are couples that find themselves cruising alone most of the time. The layout of the 58’ shows just how well this design philosophy works.

On Deck

All the hardware used in the construction of the Krogen 58’ is what you would expect to find on a larger ship. From the bow with its heavy-duty pulpit and anchor rollers to the solid hawse pipes and cleats placed around the boat, everything is first class. There is a bench seat up forward on the bow that is the perfect vantage point for watching the sunsets. Making your way to and from the bow is easy and safe with the high gunnels and stainless steel railings.

The aft covered cockpit is a delightful extension of the living space and provides enough room for several chairs and tables. It’s just a few steps up to the boat deck and flybridge. Up here there’s a large space for your dinghy and automatic davits help getting it to and from the water. Just forward of this is the sun deck, which is surrounded by railings and is a great area to lounge in the sun. Up on the fly bridge we find L-shaped seating with a table. At the flybridge helm there are two pedestal seats and all necessary gauges and controls. The only time you wouldn’t want to use these controls is while maneuvering in tight quarters. Due to the placement far back on the pilothouse your forward view is obstructed close to the bow.

Salon

Aft is the large open salon, which is flanked by large windows and a double watertight door to stern. This provides natural light and ventilation all around. There’s a large L-shaped sofa and high low table that converts into a double berth for guests. Across to port is room enough for two barrel chairs or loveseat.

Galley

Just forward and open to the salon is the galley. A true cook’s delight with 9 feet of counter space and double sink to prepare meals. And with the microwave oven, 64 cubic refrigerator washing machine and trash compactor, you have all the luxury of home. Cabinets up high and down low provide necessary storage for dishes and cookware. There’s also a watertight door, which provides more ventilation and light while cooking. Across form the galley to port is a bookshelf with an optional icemaker. This is also a good storage spot for books and liquor.

Cabins

Down the stairs from the salon are the staterooms and other living quarters. To port is the optional office/den or second guest stateroom. With the option of a large desk and cabinets or twin beds this is a great space that provides an office away from home. There is also an additional freezer here for extra storage on long voyages. To starboard is the guest stateroom, here again the owner has a choice of a double bed or two twins. The twins on our test boat provided great storage below each bed and opened the cabin up. There is also a hanging locker and plenty of cabinet space for all your storage.

Attached to the starboard guest stateroom and accessible from the hallway is the guest head. It features a full-sized head and standing shower which makes good use of the high deck above. The corian countertop and medicine cabinet add the finishing touches. Across the hallway to port is the washer/dryer stack unit. Further forward you will find the master stateroom, which features an en-suite head and queen sized island berth. There are two hanging lockers up here and plenty of drawers for all your belongings. There is also a dresser built in with mirror. The en-suite head features a large countertop, full-sized head and standing shower.

Pilothouse

A few steps up from the salon we find the Portuguese pilothouse. The convenient access to the pilothouse from the rest of the boat is a great safety feature when traveling with two people. You’re never far from any point on the boat. Up here you’ll find the large helm has plenty of space, even for the biggest electronics junky. The center of the helm is angled around the helm chair and provides easy access to all the important gear. The helm has a raised cherry electronic console, and overhead there is an additional cabinet for holding gear. To port on the helm there are two drawers for charts and area for plotting your course. To starboard on the helm there’s one of three phone jacks and room for radar monitors or computer screens.

There’s also an L-shaped watch berth sofa and high/low cherry table that can convert into a double when needed. Another nice feature up here are the Dutch watertight doors. This allows you to open half or all of the door depending on the weather, and makes sticking your head out easy when underway.

With a range of 2,000 miles traveling at 11.2 knots there aren’t many places you can’t reach. The Krogen 58’ is a true blue water cruiser that is at home on the high seas or just at anchor.
