The 48 Makes Extended Offshore Passagemaking Easy

Two things are necessary to create a boat that is capable of crossing an ocean, extended range and the ability to withstand any conditions Mother Nature chooses to present along the route. No matter how carefully weather forecasts are examined, on a week-long passage severe weather could develop during the trip. The Kadey-Krogen 48 North Sea’s full-displacement hull and fuel-friendly engine offer the range, and the ability to withstand the worst conceivable weather. (The 48 North Sea with her ballasted keel will right herself after being pushed 85 degrees over on her side.) But the Krogen 48 was designed for a third vitally important element: livability. When the world is reduced to forty-eight by sixteen feet for an extended period, comfort becomes almost as important as safety.
Interestingly, only a handful of Krogen owners will ever actually cross an ocean, according to Judd Straus, Vice President of Kadey-Krogen Yachts. Most Krogen 48s will be used for coastal cruising and/or as a primary or secondary home. While these statistics surprised me, they make sense. Many of the features designed into the 48 North Sea to create a world traveler also make it ideal for coastal cruising and extended periods on the water. By designing a boat for comfort during long passages, Jim Krogen may have inadvertently created the ultimate live-aboard.
Many boats offer spacious saloons, accommodating galleys, and generous master staterooms. But what makes the 48 North Sea so unusually home-like is that every space on the boat is comfortable in itself. Most people would not live in a house with tiny bedrooms or claustrophobic bathrooms, so why live that way on the water? The 48’s master stateroom features a full queen bed, not an oval-shaped, wedged-into-the-bow sportfishing boat queen; but an actual, rectangular queen-sized bed, accessible from both sides. The guest stateroom is normally configured as a spacious office and den, with a long, L-shaped settee and a desk; but even when converted for sleeping, it is capaciously pleasant.
The roomy pilothouse features an L-shaped dinette to keep the skipper involved in the party. This dinette converts into a double bed for additional guests or as a watch berth on nighttime crossings. From the nap-inducing foredeck bench seat to the huge, fully covered aft deck, each individual area of the 48 North Sea is an inviting place to be.
While the use of interior space is more house-like than most production boats, the flavor of the interior is conventionally nautical. Glossy white overheads are contrasted with teak accented deck beams, and teak-veneer paneling is meticulously crafted but used cautiously, keeping the interior light and cheery. The built-in settees are proportioned like home furnishings, but the long, straight lines and teak construction are distinctively seafaring. The Krogen 48 North Sea is a salty boat, both in function and appearance.
Specs and Performance
As for her offshore abilities, very few production boats are as capable a cruiser. With a two-thousand mile range at eight knots, she can travel to any isolated port on the globe with the fuel on board. A sixty-thousand pound loaded displacement and forty-five-hundred pounds of ballast ensure that she is not just safe, but comfortable when the wind kicks up. Every detail of the design and construction was deliberated for suitability in an extended offshore passagemaker.
If you’re so inclined, stock up the cupboards, top off the tanks, turn the key and leave the familiar world behind, headed across vast oceans to exotic lands. That is the intended mission of the Kadey-Krogen 48 North Sea; a mission she is well suited to carrying out.
