Harris Kayot S260
I was really looking forward to testing some boats in cooler weather than the Florida summers had to offer. What I wasn’t expecting was the low thirties and mid forties that Fremont, Indiana had to offer for our tests of Harris Kayot’s deckboat line. Oh well, the outlet store was close to the hotel and the coffee was good in the mornings!
Harris Kayot says they built this boat to handle big water as well as river and lake waters with agility and control. She can get into many places the bowrider’s couldn’t get to and can carry more guests comfortably than most bowriders within her length. As you will understand soon, she does have the room, comforts and amenities to insure a long, fun day on the water.
This boat is built with lots of room for enjoying a long day on the water. My test boat had many of the options they offer, in fact, I recommend you stop by and get a brochure or see it for yourself. I would probably want to have many of the options as standards on my boat if I was entertaining as I often do. They have optional swim showers at the bow and stern since it is just as easy to board from either with the powder coated ladder concealed behind a floor cover in the walk-thrus. Courtesy lights throughout make moving around after sundown safer and they even can turn the forward area into a large sunpad with filler cushions. Want to stay out but can’t take anymore sun? Open up the standard bimini cover and you have a large shaded area on-board. The carpet is optional, but does remove easily for cleaning and the floor is non-skid protected. Keeping cool beverages in the hands of everyone will be easier on the S260 since they have two large coolers on board, one in front and one in the back. All the seating was comfortable.
The helm seating was a high back bucket seat that did swivel and had a bolster for better site when doing hole shots with a skier behind. On the companion side, you have another high back bucket seat except it does not have a bolster. The large front bench seats are plush and have a lounger style backrest in front of the helm and companion pod. Storage in the floor up front was large enough for two or three adults to play hide-and-seek inside. (Not recommended in the heat, but felt good checking it out with a 20mph wind and 40° temperature outside!)
You can board from the bow or from the starboard area just ahead of the helm. Both seat cushions can be removed for muddy and wet feet when playing. The walk-thru windshield had a lower door that did help a lot when we were testing in the cold. Between the companion and helm seats was another storage area that could hold the PFDs and wakeboards. Although I found I had to swivel both the helm and companion seats to open it fully. Behind the helm seat was the service pod. It had a small trash can mounted on a flip out door. It also sported a sink and one of the large coolers. Across from that was a small door that concealed the battery switch. Nice to have it accessible. Often it gets jammed in a storage bin that you can’t get to easily. You can put a small table in place up front or by the stern bench seating. Engine access is large with a lift up hatch. A small stuff locker is in the floor of the stern walk-thru which leads to the swim platform and stern swim ladder.
I enjoyed testing the S260. She was a very smooth ride but did have some hull noise and glass-to-glass squeak and rattle. There was some cavitation in tight turns, but once I found the sweet spots in turning speeds, she handled good enough for some fine water sports.
The S260 is 5’6” in length and only 8’6” in width, and riding on the trailer, she weighs 5100 pounds. She has a hull entry angle of 30° and a deadrise of 17° and can slip easily into skinny water with a draft of 34 inches with the outdrive down, and 17 inches with the outdrive up. They offer a mixture of Mercury and Volvo power plants with a maximum rating of 320hp.
The S260 reached a top speed of 47.1 mph on our test run. Considering her 94-gallon tank, this could take you 164 miles. More realistically, you would probably be cruising along at 3000 rpms and around 25mph. At this speed you would expect about 8gph fuel burn and a range of 269 miles on the tank. She never registered over 88 dBa and actually got quieter when she reached cruising speed of 3000rpms. She slipped on plane at 4.1 seconds and was at 30mph in just 6.3 seconds.
