Princecraft Versailles 22 SS (Not in Production) Captain's Report

Princecraft Versailles 22 Sport Seating

Test By Capt. Bob Smith

I recently traveled up to Knoxville, Tennessee to test out Princecraft’s Versailles 22 for 2003. The weather was definitely feeling like the fall had arrived. The colors in the trees were awesome but the cold rain I could do without. Just like in Florida, wait long enough and it will change. It took two days, but it did change. Doug Sexton, Sales Development Manager for Princecraft, was patient and kept the crew entertained when he really would rather have been preparing for his trip to Canada and the plant, but we traded stories and waited together.

The wait was worth it. The Princecraft line lived up to its billing and tested out well. They made some changes from last year’s model. One change was putting the railings inside the exterior walls. Doug said they didn’t want to just follow the rest and have the problems they have with putting them inside and now they know how to do it and not hurt the looks or stability of the boat. They only use H36 sheet stock for their construction whereas most others use roll stock and H32-34. This should mean more strength in the hull and logs as it increased strength factor by about 25% according to Doug. Another change is that they build for today’s adults. We have all changed and evolution seems to be making us bigger, so it makes sense that they need to consider this when building products for us. They seem to have a great control over their vendors as well. Ninety percent of their suppliers are within eyesight of their plant in Princeville, Quebec.

After entering from the front, you have a choice of two captain’s chairs or bench seating in the bow. Both captain’s chairs swivel and have flip up arms. They have high backs and are very well cushioned. Cup holders with small stuff trays are in each corner pod which house the docking lights and navigation lights. The forward bench seats are plush and have rotocast shells for storage underneath. Seat bottoms are hinged so they will stay on board even in the strongest breeze. A portable two-cup holder fits into any of the bench seats. A small prototype filler sun pad for the front area does add space for tanning.

At the galley you have a sink with pump handle attached to a five-gallon fresh water container stored below. You also have a drainable covered storage compartment and cup holder here at the galley.

The helm station has typical gauge arrangement, three spoke tilt wheel removable windshield, Clarion stereo and digital in-dash depth and speed gauges. The cockpit area has an L shaped lounger with hinged seat bottoms and rotocast storage below. A large sun pad stretches across the back above the stern seating. The port side of the L seating has a nicely angled back in the corner for stretching out and enjoying the sun. The batteries are stored under the stern section of the L seating. The sun pad lifts to expose access to the engine and the fuel cell. The left side of the pad flips up for access to the swim ladder and holds the optional changing station.

The Versailles 22 Sport Seating model is 22 feet 4 inches long and 8 feet 6 inches wide. She was easy to trailer, slipping right up on the bunks like slicing butter. She only weighs 2000 pounds dry weight and can handle up to a 90 hp outboard engine. She is rated to carry up to 16 people and has a thirty-four gallon fuel cell in the stern. Her pontoons are 25 inches in diameter and are 2 mm thick. The pontoon has spray shields and the corners are reinforced and protected.

She tested out well when we ran her up and down the river. She idled at 1000 rpms with her 50hp Mercury 50L Bigfoot outboard. We registered cruise at about 4500 rpms and 1.8 gph while top end was 5500 rpms burning 4.6 gph. Cruise rate fuel burn would be about 6.64 gph for a range of 203 miles on a tank while top end would get you 110 miles on the tank. Noise was no problem, never reaching over 83 dBa.

The Versailles 22 SS makes a great platform for cruising, entertaining or just slipping up on your favorite beach. Check it out for yourself at a local dealer.
