Glastron GS279 Sport Cruiser

“Runabouts Done Right” is the slogan for this company, so what is a GS279 Sport Cruiser from Glastron? Well, it is one of four models that round out the 2003 Glastron product line. They claim to be spirited performers with a runabout mentality balanced with a touch of luxury, user-friendliness and efficiency in layout.

I had to look it over, and did at their Dealer Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. The weather wasn’t nearly as kind as Irwin Jacobs, chairman of Genmar, and his team members waiting to share their designs to the press. Gerry Kleckner met me at the dock and invited me to take it out for a spin when the weather allowed. As soon as the lightning moved on, we took off.

Her dry weight is around 5375 pounds with a beam of 8’5” and a length of 27’5”. She is still a trailerable boat with the right towing rig. I took this one out in a bit of a squall and still managed to get a few numbers for you. I cruised along at 2000rpms and consumed only 5.1 gallons per hour using a Mercury 250HP 5.7 carbureted engine. This will take me 147 miles on a tank, plenty for a long lazy day of cruising. Top speed in my conditions (lots of chop and about 2 foot waves) was at 4500 rpms and 40 miles per hour. This would burn 19.5 mpg and go 133 miles on a tank. Hole shot time was 4.9 seconds and 30 mph time was 10.1 seconds.

I had some waves splash up to the cockpit, but the ride was comfortable. The interior was well laid out with a galley, head and berths forward and astern. The cockpit and bridge area has plenty of room to entertain neighbors and friends at your favorite anchorage, including lounge seat to port, cockpit galley to port, bench seat to stern and double seat that folded down for sun bathing to starboard. The molded in swim platform with swim ladder will probably get the most use with the family cruiser.

Getting down to check out the engines was pretty easy once I figured out I needed to move the double starboard seat fully forward. Down in the engine room was lots of space to move about and hook up gear. Very nice!

This boat really does fit well into a family cruiser boat while still carrying out the feel and handling of a runabout, which is their heritage.
