A more affordable boat in the Henriques line which has the offshore capabilities of larger sportfishers.

Key Features

    * Soft, dry ride
    * Huge centerline insole fishbox
    * "Big boat" cockpit space and feel
    * Nice, light cabin for overnighting
    * Outstanding engine access via centerline hatch on bridge deck that lifts forward. Plenty of room to move around twin Yanmar 190-hp diesels.

    Considerations
    * Must remove helm seat from pedestal for full access to engines
    * Must lift out fishbox for access to Racor filters and running gear
    * Yanmar's certified testing revealed a top-end speed of 36 mph with this powertrain package. Our test results were slower due to extreme heat/humidity on test day and the presence of bottom growth on the running surface. See our TEST RESULTS page for details.

Henriques 28 Express Fisherman Captain's Report

Center console boats in the twenty-five to thirty foot range make great fishing boats. They are fast, stable, and have lots of room to fish. Unfortunately, they tend to be wet, bouncy and have little or no amenities. When I head offshore, I prefer an express style boat with diesel inboards. The weight of the engines forward and down low improves the ride. A windshield and enclosure keep the whole crew out of the sun and spray. An uncluttered transom is easier for fishing and diving. The Henriques 28 epitomizes the small express fisherman. She has a large cockpit with all of the necessities for fishing, a soft, dry riding hull that also trolls and drifts well, and enough creature comforts that even non-anglers will enjoy an extended outing offshore.

As with all of Henriques’ boats, the design appears to have started with the cockpit. Sixty square feet of fishing space includes a transom livewell, tackle center, bait prep sink, six rod holders, and lots of storage. Flush mounted pop-up cleats in the covering boards make line handling straightforward yet won’t snag fishing lines, fingers, toes, or gear. A large transom door and huge fishbox complete the fishing paraphernalia.

Forward of the cockpit, the bridgedeck is raised slightly for good visibility from the helm and to keep the deck dry. The helm is just to the right of center and includes plenty of room for electronics. The helm chair, which slides forward or back and swivels, can be positioned for running the boat while seated or standing, as can the tilt steering wheel. A bench seat to starboard lifts to reveal a storage locker. The bench seat on the port side includes hatches in the face to allow storage access without lifting the seat, and includes a set of drawers.

The cabin is entered via a sliding companionway door on the port side, and is spacious enough to make this boat a practical weekender. The V-berth forward has an uncommonly large table with ample space for dining, or can be converted to a comfortable bed. The galley, just inside the companionway on the port side, includes a refrigerator, microwave, and sink. The countertop adjacent to the sink could be fitted with a small stove. On the starboard side, the head is more than adequate and in a pinch can be used as a shower. A hanging locker and the main electrical panel are on either side of the head door.

The engineroom is accessed by lifting the steps between the cockpit and bridgedeck. Room for maintenance is better than average for a twenty-eight footer. The fuel filters, drip-less shaft seals, and main engine sea strainers are located under the cockpit, accessible with the fishbox removed. This arrangement is fantastic for dockside maintenance, but would be a bit troublesome if the fuel filters or sea strainers needed to be checked on the way back from a successful fishing trip.

Out test boat was powered with twin 190 horsepower Yanmar diesels, which pushed us to 30.7 miles-per-hour at 3300 RPM. At 3000 RPM we made 25.5 miles-per-hour and burned 16.2 gallons-per-hour. This equated to 1.57 miles-per-gallon and produced a conservative range of 270 miles from her 220 gallon diesel tanks. Engine options up to 230 horsepower make this boat’s speed comparable to most similar-sized outboard boats, yet diesel power makes her quite economical.

The Henriques 28 Express Fisherman is capable of venturing offshore with the big boys. She is comfortable enough for the family, even overnight. Her modest price and economical diesels won’t break the bank.
