Sabre Yachts 38 Salon Express (2014-) Captain's Report

Sabre 38 Salon Express

This Sabre 38 Salon Express’ Navy Blue hull helps set her apart from most boats in the anchorage.

”Down East” Design

Several companies have their own version of the “Down East,” Maine-inspired lobster boat. (Since the prevailing wind is from the west, in the days of wooden ships and iron men the boats sailed “down wind to the east” from Boston to Maine.)

Modern Downeast boats all originate from the century-old design of waterman-built fishing boats known in the coastal waters off Maine. Common characteristics include a fine bow entry forward with a fair amount of deadrise amidships that flattens out towards the stern. A graceful shear line, a full length keel and a considerable cockpit are all common characteristics. These features combine to make a boat that is seaworthy and easily manageable by one person, proven by decades of offshore commercial fishing, primarily lobster fishing.

Several yacht builders designed boats to these basic design concepts and have found a significant following for not only their sea worthiness and ride, but also the classic lines and retro look harkens back to the days of the classic wooden yachts of a bygone era.

Variations. While the Sabre 38 Salon Express does not have the underwater features of a true lobster boat she does keep the appearance. Her V-hull has an 18-degree deadrise at the transom is more contemporary and does not have the full length keel or protected running gear.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

Standard power: twin Volvo Penta D4 300-hp diesels driving through IPS400 pod drives. The builder says that with this power she has a WOT speed of 30 knots. We have not tested the boat.

Mission of the Sabre 38 Salon Express

The Sabre 38 Salon Express is designed for cruising and entertaining in comfort and style. Her exterior profile says “down east” while her operating systems are state-of-the-art for a boat of this size -- from her pod propulsion drive train to her joystick controls.

Her hull lines are specifically designed for the installation of pods, offering increased fuel economy, and quiet running. Joystick controls allow confident boat handling when docking or maneuvering in tight spaces.

Her interior layout, with aft deck just 5’’ (0.13 m) below the salon level, allows an open salon offering greater overall living space than her LOA would suggest. Her varnished cherry interior and yacht quality craftsmanship shows her Maine-built roots.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

The Sabre 38 Salon Express, this “Down East” style vessel has a graceful level of comfort and style.

Distinguishing Features

Aft Deck Seating Near Salon Seating Height. This brings outside living space into the open salon allowing all spaces aboard to be comfortably used as a grand living area.

Autoglide Trim Tab System. This system has preset settings that calibrated to the owner’s preferences and bow rise. In addition to fore and aft trim, the system will adjust trim when your crew moves to or gathers on one side of the boat or the other.

Retro Lines and Exterior Styling. The general Downeast styling of Maine built lobster boats is not unique to the Sabre 38 Salon Express, but Sabre’s own interpretation is somewhat unique and is recognizable at a distance.

Raised Perimeter Safety Rail. This raised rail that encompasses the entire vessel affords safe line handling and fore deck safety. Whether sun bathing or anchor handling, it ensures those that are on board stay on-board.

Overview

For the boater that likes to cruise with friends or entertain the whole family, this time-proven design offers a stable and comfortable platform in most seas. The vessel offers extensive seating with a well thought-out floor plan and deck seating.

The overall layout and engineering says weekends aboard for one or two couples or a young family. For those in southern U.S. climates, it would make short jaunts to the Exumas or the Berry Islands a pleasure.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

Ample seating, storage and well organized counter spaces make this open galley design a pleasure for both the captain at the helm and the mate, with both the salon and the galley available for small gatherings with friends and guests.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

The open galley design as seen from the helm offers ample space for food service. A pass through the master stateroom allows this to double as a beverage service as well.

Galley

The Sabre 38 Salon Express offers a functional galley, double drawer refrigerator and a two-burner stove top. There are drawers and storage lockers below the counter with storage cabinets outboard and above the aft counter. The builder offers an optional additional refrigerator or icemaker that can be installed in the salon.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

Starboard of the helm area an innovative reversible seat can be positioned forward facing or aft facing. A Stidd 500N series helm seat, Stazo wooden steering wheel and an Ultraleather upholstery on helm/navigation areas, complete the helm with premium materials and equipment.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

Ample seating with an adjustable dinning/coffee table makes the salon a versatile area for entertaining. The starboard cabinet contains a large retractable flatscreen TV plus storage.

Salon

The salon focuses on an elevated U-shaped settee to port with a high-gloss table with storage underneath. The mates/navigators L-shaped settee to port and forward opens to the galley below with a stainless steel hand rail. The wall of cabinets to starboard, offer extensive storage and a LED TV on manual lift. There is an optional settee and table that converts to a berth for the primary seating area.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

An additional dining table on the aft deck offers many options for entertaining. The mere 5’’ (0.13 m) difference in deck height between the outer and inner spaces, along with the full beam aft salon entrance combines these areas into one grand space.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

Below the mate’s seating, Sabre has tucked away a lower lounge that doubles as a guest stateroom with filler cushion.

Lower Lounge

The lower level lounge adjacent and aft of the galley offers an L-shaped settee with pull-out that converts to a double berth. Sabre offers an optional television/DVD combo for the lower lounge and an optional large 36” x 10” hull side fixed port light to increase the natural light into this area.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

The master stateroom forward offers space and storage for a couple using the vessel for limited travel. Varnished cherry cabinetry with teak and holly soles flesh out the traditional look.

Master / Forward Stateroom

The island berth layout, equipped with a five foot wide mattress is one of the largest in class. Cherry cabinetry drawers and A/C return grills are under the bed. There is a cedar lined hanging locker to starboard. The divider between the galley and stateroom offers a surface mounted 26” LED television.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

A modern head area with a fully enclosed glass shower is the only deviation from the traditional retro styling board.

Living space aboard is excellent with an expansive aft deck and multiple seating areas. The walkways around the pilothouse are sufficient and the nearly continuous perimeter rail system is at a good height for safety.

Decor

All interior cabinetry is varnished cherry with screens on opening ports and hatches. The laminated wood trim on counters and shelves add to the retro Downeast overall ambiance. The soles are teak and holly with two coats of sealer.

Options to Consider

There are few options available because the boat is well equipped as standard. One to consider is an optional icemaker or additional refrigerator. With the space constraints there is little space available in the galley so the builder has designed space into the salon seating area. Additionally, there are optional fabric and drapery selections available.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

The Sabre 38 Salon Express has a 13’4” (4.06 m) beam, which combined with her 16-degree deadrise at the transom should make her stable at rest.

Maneuvering

We recommend test driving any prospective boat purchase and we find that the joystick controlled computerized steering system such as the one the Sabre 38 has becomes addictive. Joysticks have revolutionized the way we feel about close quartered maneuvering. With GPS positioning and computer over rides adjusting for wind and tides, coming into a new or challenging port or marina is now a walk in the park.

Possibly the most important aspect of pod drives is not their ability to be multi-direction when controlled by a joystick at the dock, but for powerful directional control in a following sea or in a challenging inlet.

Performance

We have not tested the boat so can make no comment on her performance or handling.

Sabre 38 Salon Express

She weighs 21,500 lbs. (9,773 kgs.) with a full load which should give her a solid ride.

Observations

Sabre was founded on the notion of making a Downeast-style cruising boat have a good turn of speed so that owners can have productive long weekends, and we are sure this boat meets that requirement. With the pod drives Sabre has added maximum efficiency and control to that equation. The company has done a good job of installing as much teak interior joiner work as necessary to give the boat a warm, yachty feel, without going to excess. We think these are the major decision points that allows the Sabre 38 Salon Express to be a good value.
