Boston Whaler 420 Outrage (2015-)
Boston Whaler 420 Outrage (2015-)
Move over competition, there’s a new big dog in the room and she’s going to be tough to beat. The new 420 Outrage from Boston Whaler is the largest Whaler ever built and offers everything the company can throw into a single package. She’s designed for hard offshore conditions and comes with the auto adjusting trim tabs of the Dynamic Running Surface. Being a direct result of customer feedback, this could very well be the ultimate offshore fishing machine. Of course, the fact that she can also accommodate luxury cruising is no accident. While the family may love it, the Canyons are an all day cruise just to get there. Now staying there is even better.

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage (2015-) Captain's Report

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

The all-new Boston Whaler 420 Outrage has a 13' (3.96 m) beam, a 13" (.79 m) draft, gear up, and displaces 24,800 lbs. (11,249 kg) with quad 300-hp Mercury outboards.

For the last 8 to 9 years or so, very small boat builders have been building 41' and 42' (12 m to 13 m) center consoles and they have sold a surprising number. Even more surprising was how people were using them -- more day boating with a gang of people rather than offshore sportfishing.

Even more recently, builders of large bowriders have been incorporating small cabins in them, thus offering the advantages of a bowrider and a cuddy cabin sportboat all in one. These two design evolutions, we think, are harbingers of things to come in the traditional fiberglass open boat market which has remained pretty much the same for the last three decades. Perhaps the new 420 Outrage is the first example of a whole new approach.

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

The 420 Outrage has a 22-degree deadrise at the transom which means she has been designed for a comfortable ride offshore at high speeds.

The bow may become the most popular place on the boat with versatile seating and plenty of it. An optional table on an electric lift turns this area into an ideal spot for cocktails or lunch. When powered down, the table becomes a platform for a cushion, turning the bow into a huge sun pad. We like the through-the-stem anchor and the ground tackle is standard.

Mission of the Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

The 420 Outrage is for people who want to have a large, safe, open, day-boat on the water which will hold a lot of people for all sorts of activities. She is far more than a center console on steroids designed for owners of large, expensive convertibles who want to down size. And, she is far more than a salty-looking, mammoth bowrider for towing activities and picnics for people who want to trade up.

We think that the Boston Whaler 420 Outrage may well be a whole new category of boat that has a mission as broad as the interests of the people who own her. She is a large, open yacht that can do most anything and go most anywhere. Her credo could probably be: "Mission Not-Impossible.”

Note the width of the side decks on either side of the helm seats and center console. The width makes movement easy for fishing or entertaining.

She is Big

When compare the Boston Whaler 420 Outrage with several popular 42' (13 m) express cruisers on the market we discovered that her 13'0" (3.96 m) beam and her 24,800-lb. (11,249 kg) displacement with engines was about the same, in fact, in some cases she was heavier. And then when we counted the obvious seats available out in the air, we realized that no express cruiser in class came remotely close.

The boat's 13' beam leaves plenty of room for instruments and the hatch to the cabin below. Note the two footrests for sitting or leaning.

The port and starboard companion seats swivel to face aft. The helm seat is electrically actuated. Behind is a console that can be used for bait prep on fishing boats or an al fresco galley or wet bar on day-boats for entertaining.

She is Loaded

Boston Whaler has loaded this boat up for serious use by providing equipment such as a 10 kW, Low-CO generator to power the boat's two air conditioning systems -- one with 18,000 BTUs for the cabin below, and one with 12,000 BTUs for the helm station. A sampling of other, usually optional equipment, includes: central vac, 26" flatscreen TV, full electronics, VacuFlush toilet, port side dive door, electric windlass with complete ground tackle, two refrigerator/freezers, an electrically-actuated telescoping sunshade over the aft cockpit, auto-adjusting electric trim tabs, freshwater anchor washdown, 6 kW bow thruster, and the four 300-hp Mercury outboard engines.

Sportfishing Ready. When we compare her to the semi-custom large center consoles made by the boutique builders we find that the Boston Whaler engineers have been there, too, and have been sure to match or exceed their boats in what is popularly known as "fishability". That means she has plenty of rod holders and rod storage, along with six in-deck storage compartments that can be fishboxes, a 24-gallon livewell in the boat's port quarter with a clear top and a rounded, blue-colored interior with lights.

Her bait prep station not only has a wide counter and sink with hot and cold pressure water, but also three tackle drawers to port and a 2.3 cu. ft. refrigerator/freezer to starboard.

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

One of the design innovations on the 420 Outrage is her leaning post/seat for three on the forward part of the bait station/wet bar. The seat bottom folds up to create a leaning bolster or down for sitting. In this way when running six people can be facing forward together in two rows.

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

The transom fold-away bench seat is wide. Note the 24-gallon livewell in the port quarter and the port side dive door. While ideal for a scuba diver both jumping in the water and coming out, it also makes an excellent place for swimmers to come aboard. In addition, at left, can be seen the transom gate to the conventional swim platform and ladder.

Entertainment Ready. In addition to the equipment already mentioned, she has three places where guests will congregate: forward, amidships and aft. Forward there are two removable seat backs so that passengers can ride facing forward when underway. When at anchor, an optional electrically-raised table can be lowered to make a large sun pad with filler cushion. Behind this massive sun bathing area is yet another one with a chaise-style back rest.

One of the boat's innovations is the ability to create even more seating on this midships pad by propping up cushions to make seat backs for sitting and lounging. See the image on this page.

In the stern there is a fold-away transom bench seat and an optional table can be fitted here when the occasion arises.

The galley and standard 26" TV are to starboard. The hardwood deck is standard.

This is a superman x-ray vision view of the wet head. It is good sized for an open boat and has standing headroom under the shower nozzle.

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage

Looking forward in the cabin we can see the headroom in the center. Plenty of light comes in from the hull side windows and the portlight over the TV. A platform slides out from under the seat to form a bed for two.

The Cabin

The Head. Below is a cabin with stand-up headroom, something that is possible on a boat this size. To starboard is an enclosed head with sink and a VacuFlush toilet. Overhead is a "rain-style" shower head tapped in to a 60-gallon freshwater tank, so there is enough water for everyone. A 20 gallon water heater is standard.

Galley. The 420 Outrage comes standard with a sink, microwave, and a 1.7 cu. ft. refrigerator/freezer. There is a trash container under the sink. An optional electric grill can be fitted on the bait prep counter in the cockpit.

Settee/Double Bed. The V-shaped settee converts into a bed for two by sliding out a platform. There is no provision for a table here, and with so much space on deck, having lunch there would be far more comfortable. Remember, this is not a cruiser, but rather a day-boat with overnight sleeping accommodations.

Options to Consider

We like colored hulls and the builder has 9 colors to choose from in addition to white. In addition to the options already mentioned, we suggest that prospective buyers consider the list below--

• Wing curtains under the hardtop
• Full-enclosure curtains
• Joystick
• Freezer plates in fishboxes
• Fully-equipped flying bridge
• Sunshade at bow
