The Nord Star 26 Patrol has a LOA of 28’2” (8.6 m) and a beam of 9’2” (2.8 m). She’s designed to tackle CE Ocean Class B weather.
The Nord Star 26 Patrol is a rugged, go-anywhere type of boat that would make an ideal high-latitude island commuter, and definitely a cruising boat designed to go off the beaten path. She’s designed to sleep two, while having a carrying capacity for six. With her enclosed pilothouse she’s ideal for carrying boating well into the winter months. This is noteworthy for a 26' (7.92 m) boat -- she is designed to take conditions that most might not want to tackle in anything less than a 40-footer (12.2 m).
She’s not designed for luxury, but a touch of luxury is achieved by the Quantum equipment package that includes dark stained mahogany or traditional teak interior, leather seats, thicker side railings, teak toerails, stylish carpets and wooded shades in the pilothouse.
With a split bow rail she’s well suited for the bow-in approaches. Notice the bow thruster.
With forward-canted windshields she is well suited for low light/low vis operations where a conventionally designed windshield would create glare. Grab handles along the overhead allow for a more sucure transition along the side decks.
She was built from a design meant to handle tough Scandinavian shoulder seasons, as well as the winter in all but the worst conditions. But no ice, please, she's fiberglass. Nord Stars are often put into commercial service in far northern waters as water taxis and government boats.
The Tropics? Nord Stars are also used in warmer climates as well. The builder has active dealers in 14 countries, including France, Greece, Italy and Spain. Yes, the pilothouse can be air-conditioned, not a popular option in Scandinavia, but sometimes wanted in the Mediterranean.
The large aft cockpit is equally well suited for fishing and hauling in traps, and as a gathering spot for the guests to enjoy the outdoors on deckchairs when day boating.
• 18.3-Degree Deadrise. This would be characterized as a moderate V, and not what we would expect from an offshore boat, but it represents a fair compromise between a deep-V fast boat and a shallower deadrise cruising boat. It also is a good compromise between cruising-speed comfort and fuel economy.
• Why is it a good compromise? For starters, when the seas start to build, the boat will be slowed below planing speed, so the deep-V’s hull is not needed anyway. This hull will provide far better stability at displacement speeds in rolly conditions. The same is true when at anchor.
• Diesel Sterndrive Power. The 26 Patrol comes standard with a Volvo Penta D4 engine turning a Duoprop outdrive. By going with sterndrive power, more interior space is opened up. It’s also a more efficient method of powering a boat, especially this size, due to the location and angle of the props.
• Low Air-Draft Profile. This is a boat designed for the rivers and canals of Europe, all replete with moderately low bridges, and the 26 can cruise nearly all of them. (She has a transport height of 10' (3.05 m) with cradle.)
• Reversed Windshields. This is a trait of the entire line and for good reason. It virtually eliminates glare, and for a boat designed to run in rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog and gloom of night, this is a critical concern.
• Side Doors. Not only does this make for a handy source of fresh air when running, it’s also a pivotal feature for running the boat single handed.
• High Bulwarks. There are not many 26' (7.92 m) boats like this on the market. The bulwarks both port and starboard are high which helps keep the deck dry and make working on deck far safer than it would be otherwise.
The opening side doors not only make for excellent ventilation, but ease single-handed operations. Just drop a line from that midships cleat to the dock, and then leisurely tie up the rest of the lines right after.
• Comfortable, Affordable Size. Let's face it, boats are expensive, but if a smaller one can do the job of a bigger one, it is a win-win all around.
• Ocean Class B Rating. This means that she can safely handle seas up to 13’ and winds in excess of 40 knots. That's probably more than most of her owners will want to handle, but it is nice to know that she has been built to those ISO standards.
• Built From a Proud Heritage. Olli Lindkvist currently runs Nord Star, the third generation of his family to do so. That means that all the mistakes of his father, and grandfather, have been learned long ago. But more importantly, the ways of doing things that work well have also been learned.
Here are two good examples of how the 26 Patrol is well laid out for operations in Europe where the practice of bow-in or stern-in docking is the norm. The split bow rail allows for boarding and debarkation much easier than climbing over a railing, and at the stern, the spool on the port rail is strapping for securing to a stern mooring to hold her in position.

With handrails overhead, to the side, and a support pole aft, this is clearly a boat that is designed to be away from the dock and plowing through snotty conditions.
Here we can see the wood from the Quantum equipment package used to add the touches of luxury to what would otherwise be a dedicated workboat. The teak and holly footrests are a nice touch.
Looking aft, Nord Star went with wraparound seating surrounding a support stanchion with a table. Under the table is an adjustment to secure the table to a given height and this also allows it to be raised flush with the overhead to have it completely out of the way. The fabric upholstery is a welcome departure from the basic vinyl that we typically see.
Below decks there is comfortable seating which, with the addition of a filler cushion, converts to a cozy berth for two people.
To the port side of the cabin is a modest galley with sink, refrigerator and counter -- all under the fold-away companion seat.
A sizeable swim platform is covered in the same teak decking as the cockpit and side decks. We’d rethink the tripping hazard of the grab handles to either side of the platform. Note the engine room vents to the side of the hull; we might put them inside the gunwale. We like the open port and starboard transom gates as they serve as huge scuppers.
Boarding can be accomplished from either side through classy gates with the Nord Star logo. Notice how she was designed with good-sized side decks to make passage for and aft easy and safe. That detail, of course, limits the size of the cabin. Clearly this is a boat that was made for cruising inside but working and playing outside. Note the height of the bulwarks on this 26-footer (7.92 m).
To the enclosed head compartment is a desirable feature on a 26' (7.92 m) boat and one that is rare.
The design concept upon which the Nord Star 26 Patrol is based is popular in numerous parts of the world. She represents a practical design for boaters that are more likely to not only want to travel at anytime, but for various reasons have to. The amount of utility that her strength and design carry is quite attractive, and she could easily be thought of as a water-based SUV. That’s certainly how we see her.
And even though we tout her ability to carry on in frigid temperatures, she’s also a capable fair weather boat. As for family, there’s no reason why she can’t take everyone on the water for a day of tubing, skiing, snorkeling, or fishing. All with the confidence that when a summer storm comes through, it doesn’t mean the day is lost.
